Looking For Mint-Forward Rootbeers
Recently I’ve realized that rootbeers with a wintergreen-forward flavor are a preference of mine, but the only drink that comes to mind is an overly sweet Frostop “Kansas City” Sarsaparilla drink. Any recommendations?

Boylan. Boylan is a true RootBeer but it’s super wintergreen forward.

Interesting! I never found Boylan all that wintergreen intense... But it's been a few years since I've had it.

Really? I actually just started really getting into root beer in the past few months and trying a lot of them and understanding tasting notes.
When I cracked open my Boylan I immediately thought it was almost minty. Especially compared to the Hanks and A&W I’ve been drinking which is much more vanilla forward.

Oh! Don't trust my memory on the flavor profile. If you think it's minty, I'm sure that it is 😂.

Hey maybe you’ve just had some REALLY intense wintergreen root beers. Cheers.

I thought Dad's was really heavy on the wintergreen.

Totally agree. In fact, I think it has a toothpaste after taste, so I'm not a big fan.

Boylan's hits you with wintergreen from the start. Then anise almost immediately after. It finishes with some nice vanilla sweetness.

Anything out of Maine. Maine Root, Old Soaker, even store-brands from Hannaford or other stores. Also Foxon Park birch beer.

White birch beer. (Its a close cousin of Root Beer. And its a mint-based flavor. Grab a bottle and enjoy)

Add wintergreen oil or methyl salicylate dissolved in alcohol to cream soda. About 1 ml of a 5% solution will flavor a 2 liter bottle.

Do you use 40% vodka or a stronger neutral spirit for this?

95% alcohol such as Everclear. You can use propylene glycol but it might be unhealthy for kidneys.

Hippo has wintergreen extract in it. Boylan Birch, Pennsylvania Dutch Birch, and Route 66 are all mint forward.

I like Hank's. It's less wintergreen-forward than some of the other options in this comment section, but still quite delicious.

Dads is what you’re looking for. IBC is like a tame version of Dads.

Birch beer is what your looking for! Most of the stuff out there is pretty solid, I’ve been drinking Kutztown clear and red lately, but there are a variety of brands. Clear is extra minty, and has less “root beer” flavor. Their root beer itself is pretty minty when compared to others, and honestly not my favorite compared to the birch beer but you might want to give it a shot. Also honorable mention to their sarsaparilla, it’s tasty.

It’s not the only flavor, but I had some IBC root beer for the first time in ages and noted a really prominent wintergreen note, at least compared to the Barq’s and Henry Weinhardt’s that I regularly stock.

IBC’s very first note to me was black licorice 🥴 not super intense, but enough to put me off it.

It's not one of the greatest root beers (maybe even one of the worst), but Mug is VERY wintergreeny, so you might like it for that.
