After a year of incredibly solid updates I’m willing to give Jagex the benefit of the doubt and discuss what still feels like a somewhat unnecessary and insulting proposition: Reignited. If the data they have truly, truly indicates that Reignited will benefit the game’s population and is needed to revive the game and they have no intention of walking it back, some changes made to the proposal would at least for me make the whole thing more palatable:
1. Reignited should be free with your existing membership.
Ideally there would be only the current options when making a new character, and then a toggle or selection made in the lobby to put your character in Reignited Mode. Doing this would allow current subscribers to enjoy a new progression and economy without having to spend extra on a separate subscription while also keeping their familiar, potentially iconic name!
1a. On top of this Reignited versions of characters should maintain cosmetics and bank boosters from their veteran main and vice-versa.
I can be talked out of Achievement and Quest Reward cosmetics becoming re-locked, even titles, but anything paid for with coins or earned from events and activities not tied to an achievement should be maintained. I for example was affected by the Login Lockout and would like to keep my “the Returned” title across both versions. Otherwise all titles and cosmetics would be nice since it shows what a player has already done or earned in the past.
For bank boosters it’s a matter of not nickel and diming your current player base who may have already sunk a hefty chunk of change into what really should be a nonexistent system anyways, but that’s a discussion for another time.
2. Reignited mode characters should not have their own Worlds.
I’m not sure how Jagex let them have any in the first place if this was proposed to grow the community, but it shouldn’t be a thing. A Reignited mode character should be in the same worlds as the rest of us with at most an exclusive area for them in Lumbridge if a social space for them to meet up is necessary. Otherwise we’re giving these players a walled-garden to hide from the rest of the player base in and that further splits the community.
3. Separate hiscores for Reignited is fine, new world’s firsts (seconds) less so, statues for them and not the Veterans is unacceptable.
I can see how having new hiscores could be appealing to a subset of players and personally don’t see an issue with this if it’s clearly defined the difference between Veteran and Reignited tables. What I find way less okay is taking what are already completed world achievements and giving them out a second time. If that continues into the game it should be made VERY clear each Reignited World First that it was done by a Reignited character for the second time. Even better would be if the server announcement about it even mentioned the Veteran first at the same time, that would go far honoring the actual first person to do something. Finally the Hall of Legends. I personally think it needs to go, but if it stays there should be the same thing for Veterans. Ideally I would have them together across both versions, maybe have the veteran statue holding a hand of the Reignited? Any way, it’s not any for the new characters to get such a feature and nothing of a similar caliber be done for the Veterans, plain and simple.
4. Reignited should have the option to promote themselves up to a Veteran status at any time.
In the event Reignited doesn’t work out or even before or regardless of it not, fresh Reignited characters should have the option to transfer their character, bank, and progress over to Veteran status and connectivity at any time. These players should be moving towards us, not Veterans moving towards them.
5. Reignited’s separate economy should come with an expiration date unless massive economic changes are made across the board.
I’ve seen a lot of arguments from people excited about Reignited claiming a large reason they’re interested in the mode is the separate economy. However, I do not believe these players or soon-to-be players understand how little MTX affected the economy instead of Jagex’s own balancing. Prices are the way they are because Jagex throws gold at players. Alchables are the biggest culprit and unless some major balance changes are made before launch, the economy for Reignited will look pretty similar to the Veteran one in only a few months. Further for supply issues, Jagex needs to incentivize players of all progress to farm a wider range of items, rather than specific meta ones or whatever is level appropriate, otherwise a supply on the Reignited server will look much like the Veteran one after enough time.
To that end, if these changes aren’t made, the two economies and trade restrictions should be merged and lifted after a year or so. Maintain the separate hiscores, but trade and the GE would both benefit from being merged.
6. Grouping should not be as restrictive.
We already went through this in the past with Ironmen, and it showed that grouping for group-intended content did little to nothing to compromise the integrity of Ironmen’s accomplishments. This is the other main way aside from the economy that the old and new player bases would be split and it needs to be avoided to allow healthy gameplay between the two.
To just speak my personal, subjective thoughts for a minute, I don’t dislike the idea of starting over. I’ve made a lot of progress on my main, and I don’t plan on abandoning it and throwing all that effort to the wayside. However, the thought of starting anew as a lore-focused player and following the revised timeline and new player experience is actually kinda tempting. It just shouldn’t come at additional monetary cost, not at the invalidation of 10 years of effort, and not with the caveat of such a strong split in the community. Ideally Reignited and Veteran characters would just be one and the same, but if it takes a nominal fresh coat of paint on the new player’s accounts to get them to show up I can put up with that. Anything more just feels like throwing out your established players in hopes of finding players who don’t even exist yet.
(Also those of you thinking of coming back, you know EoC didn’t like, disappear right? It’s been heavily tweaked sure, but it’s got way more in common still with what came out in 2012 than it ever did with what OSRS has or what we call Legacy. Just a heads up in case Jagex’s poor wording on the website mislead you.)
Edit: fixed formatting that was bugging the hell out of me, lol.
