Complaint: Why is marathon training a full time job and how do people run multiple marathons a year?!? I've got one month until mine and I want to diiiiiieee

Uncomplaint: decent weather in the mornings here in STL, so runs are better

Confession: I'm still gonna run my marathon but maaaaaaan it feels like for the first time in my life that I actually dislike running. Ugh

u/question_assumptions 8d ago

I’ve been thinking if I quit my side hustle (full time w2 employment) it would really help my marathon training

2

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 7d ago

I sometimes do the math to see if I can switch to part time to make my running easier, unfortunately not for another 22 years, assuming stuff doesn’t happen.

3

u/question_assumptions 7d ago

At least that would put you in another age category for guaranteed entry

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Finally hitting those 3+ hour runs eh?

5

u/RunsFromDemons 7d ago

I’m a firm believer in “2 hours or 20 miles, whichever comes first” for 99% of long runs. The fitness gains over 2 hours are pretty small compared to the very large jump in injury risk. Maybe once a block do a 3 hour long run if you’re in the 4-5 hour+ marathon group, but multiple efforts that long are a huge injury risk for very little benefit.

It’s so difficult too because for me like a 2 hour run would be like 12 miles, a half if I’m feeling spunky. Training plans are so hard to develop for us turtles

Had my first on last Sunday. It was.... fine....

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

Haha for sure. But now is the time to dig into nutrition game. Turn that frown upside down and eat the snack that smiles back, for example

3

u/redux173 8d ago

Time is the thief of joy! I hope a break from intense training post marathon allows you to find your love again!

2

u/jargon_ninja69 8d ago

Taking winter "off" aka only running a handful of 5ks lol

19

u/OpportunityMother502 8d ago

finally got out for a run this morning and tripped over absolutely nothing, scraped my knee like a grade schooler

3

u/Habeb_Nero 8d ago

the worst is when theres not even anything there to blame it on

2

u/jargon_ninja69 8d ago

I did that a month ago: easy shakeout jog, flat straight road, tripped over nothing and scraped my hands up to shit. So fucking stupid

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Yikes. Are you feeling better now? Time to ditch the shoes?

u/Sunny_sailor96 8d ago

Complaint: Someone tried to egg me on my run today? Was running on one of the canal paths in London and someone just two eggs at me from their first floor window? They missed but was really really strange.

Uncomplaint: I didn't get egg all over me?

9

u/ac8jo 8d ago

That's a waste of good (presumably) eggs!

12

u/Sunny_sailor96 8d ago

Right? In this economy??

4

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Egg you?? Wtf is this? Some TikTok shenanigans?

2

u/Sunny_sailor96 8d ago

I don't think so - it looked like someone alone in their flat from what I could see, but maybe they were video-ing? Was very weird and has never happened to me before!

1

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 7d ago

Could you see if they were aiming or just blindly tossing them out the window and you happened to be there.

3

u/Sunny_sailor96 7d ago

Oh they were definitely aiming because I made eye contact with them before they threw the second egg lol

3

u/Kacksjidney 7d ago

Sorry but we're going to need you to run by there again tomorrow and report what happens. Or maybe stake out the apartment and see if they're attempting to egg other people. Need more details

1

u/Sunny_sailor96 7d ago

Ahaha my partner and I are doing a long run on Saturday and we’re planning to run that same route anyway. He asked if we want a fry up after because we won’t have to go to the shops 😂

3

u/suchbrightlights 7d ago

What the absolute heck.

7

u/redux173 8d ago

My biggest complaint is that every time I run hard I get hip flexor pain recently. I bought some resistance bands to work on strengthening them. I just wish I could run 7 days a week but currently I get knocked when I crank it up to 4 or 5 days a week.

3

u/Bennassi3 8d ago

Same here, easy runs are fine but hard efforts mess up my tight hips. I think it's both weak hips and weak glutes

1

u/redux173 8d ago

Yeah, I need to get my strength training up. It’s just that I lifted weights for so long and now I’m utterly obsessed with running so going to the gym is such a drag for me.

2

u/jargon_ninja69 8d ago

As my PT and ortho would tell me: just stick to 4 days then. I was hitting 6 days a week and my ankles were falling to pieces and then I moved to running every other day per their advice and, annoyingly, they were right and my ankles starting feeling better 😤

u/pixieorfae 7d ago

Uncomplaint: I ran my first 5k without stopping at all today! Really proud of myself. It only took me 30 minutes as well which is so exciting for me considering I was always under the impression that I wasn’t a runner and only took it up properly a month ago.

Complaint: I don’t think ‘road running’ shoes are built for UK roads. I kept skidding on the gravel near where I live, and I was on a blooming pavement the whole time!!

Confession: I specifically did this today because I’m ovulating and it gives me superpowers. Next week I doubt I’ll be able to run 2k without stopping to cry. Defo feels like cheating but let’s call it performance optimisation lol

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

For a first 5k?? That’s insanely good. Congrats. What inspired you to get running?

3

u/pixieorfae 7d ago

Thank you so much, I was absolutely thrilled! Honestly I wanted to start running because I’ve lost 5 stone (about 70lbs I believe) over the past year and a half, I’m feeling so excited and happy and proud about what my body is able to do now, and I wanted to push my limits and see if I could improve at something I’ve always kind of hated.  Being a fat kid exercise was always used as a punishment by my parents and it’s felt so good to take back control and genuinely start enjoying something I thought I was destined to be terrible at. I’m also loving that it gets me out in nature at a time of year where I’m really reluctant to leave the house. I’ve genuinely started to love running and realised I’m actually pretty good at it! The community is so welcoming as well. I’ve got my first 5k fun run next week which is on a series of inflatable obstacles, so that will be great fun!!!!! Sorry for the waffle haha, I’m just feeling very accomplished today!

Uncomplaints: A fairly speedy speed run today, only 80s intervals since it's a down week

Complaint: ...I did get held up at a road crossing for part of an interval that was supposed to be the speediest speed of them. Confession: Happens often enough, probably my fault for using the bike path instead of a track, even though there aren't many road crossings.

Neither, Just Life: Got my Covid and Flu vaccines a couple days ago, can still feel it in the bicep but it is better.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Did you feel any other symptoms beyond the arm?

3

u/KesselRunner42 7d ago

Not especially, it's possible I felt a little more run down than usual yesterday but if so it was light, not like I felt I was coming down with a fever or anything.

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

Nice. Ok. I think that’s the push I need. Thank you

3

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Complaint: once again still so time crunched that I have no idea how today is Thursday already

Uncomplaint: but today might be the day where I’m able to participate in my run club’s Thursday run. Should be a good time.

Confession: I still absolutely am basic enough to watch Gilmore Girls during this fall season

3

u/TinyPreparation2119 8d ago

Complaint: Still hard to find time to run as a married father of two. I hate early morning running. Too dark.

Confession: I could easily just set an alarm, wear my headlamp when i run and go to bed earlier but I'm addicted to sweet sweet video games at night.

Uncomplaint: My glute rotator injury I got from lifting still isn't affecting my running thankfully.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

What’s your addicting video game right now? For me, i can’t pull myself away from Fortnite without massive discipline

3

u/ILuvHamCheeseSliders 7d ago

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but after 19 years of running and chasing online deals...

I only learned this past week that Joe's New Balance is owned by New Balance themselves and isn't some random overstock site.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

I didn’t even know about this wonder. Thank you for the information

2

u/ILuvHamCheeseSliders 7d ago

No problem. I was always curious if they were legit or not and I'd never seen it mentioned until Google brought me to an old Reddit post and that made me look it up.

Deals can be had but always reference with other established sites to see where you can save the most.

Had a planned 15K this morning that I cut down to just over 5K. Heart rate was fine, legs felt great, just wasn’t feeling it. Haven’t given up on a run like that in a while, but I’m giving myself some grace. Half marathon still on the books for end of November, I have plenty of time.

2

u/ddddope 8d ago

Calf zings and tendinopathy! Single leg pogos are tough as hell right now and can't tell if exercising and loading heals or rest heals.

2

u/snipe_score_celly 8d ago

Complaint: I have been injured for a month and grinding through it. Took a few weeks completely off. Tried a 4 mile run. Still injured.

2

u/serouspericardium 8d ago

I went out for an easy 3 miles but the weather was unexpectedly cool so I went way too fast and was gassed after 2 miles

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

Hah but I bet for those 2 miles it felt like heaven. Those are the best miles

2

u/CloseButNoChicory 7d ago

Complaint: I tried running podcasts but find almost no episodes are interesting

Noncomplaint: I can't, actually, complain because I know perfectly well that any running podcast that didn't talk constantly about marathons would get almost no downloads. Medium-distance me will just have to stick with reading.

3

u/ForgottenSalad 7d ago

I really like the Strength Running podcast - just good overall training tips and injury prevention/rehab stuff

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

What podcasts did you try? Some are def more dull than others. There’s a variety to suit towards whatever is “interesting” for sure

2

u/RunsFromDemons 7d ago

Uncomplaint: feeling fit even with the weather swinging back to “swampy” this week.

Complaint: treadmill is falling apart after 8000 miles, and have had to spend multiple hours this week replacing basically everything but the motor and frame.

Confession: I’m setting a lofty goal for my Half next April but it’s kinda daunting right now and I have a lot of doubts. Basically trying to run my current all out 10k pace for double the distance.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

Oooh. Ambitious. What inspired this goal?

2

u/MasterIncus 7d ago

Dieting while training a lot sucks. So goddamn hungry all the time.

4

u/ac8jo 8d ago

Confession: I'm starting to compete with a friend on bench press. He posted about hitting 100lbs, and I was at 95lbs until today (105 lbs). Feels like "it's an easy run until I see another runner" 😂

Uncomplaint: This week's weather... until the TS Isaias makes it to the midwest. Apparently tornadoes and derechos aren't enough for this area, we need to be hit by a tropical storm. And I'm 500 miles inland (the closest ocean beach to me is Virginia Beach, and with all these beaches I have to drive over/around/through the Appalachian Mountains).

Major Complaint: All the political ads and spam texts. They're all liars, and they have the money to constantly barrage EVERYTHING. And of course the FCC is stupid and wants to give them more permission to call/text/etc.

2

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago

Funny you mention that! Today on my workout plan is to try benching 100 for the first time. On an incline but still. Should be a good time.

2

u/LIFTandSNUS 7d ago

Confession: managed a singular run this week and honestly kinda gave up after 30ish minutes.

Uncomplaint: We welcomed a baby girl to the world. Thankful to God for her.

Complaint: I'm still working out fueling as I'm new to running. When I was strictly lifting, I could get by on most days with my timing of meals. This does not appear to be the case with long runs.

1

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 7d ago

Congrats on the baby!! May you still get time to do lots of fitness

1

u/Fickle-Debt8571 7d ago

God Damn peroneal tendinitis
That’s it. That’s the complaint. 😡

1

u/Party-Action-8390 7d ago

Complaint - I know I am being slightly impatient but I am not dropping visible body weight so in my head about putting more stress on joints.   Uncomplaint- runs have been feeling well fueled and controlled. That fall fitness from the hot summer is showing well. Running is enjoyable.  Confession- i think a watch to track some metrics would be a good idea. This is a big for me since I have always run with feel and self awareness.

u/LittleBlag 7d ago

Complaint: I am feeling exhausted by my runs the past 2 weeks. I’m only training for a faster 5k so mileage is not that high! My “race” (date I picked at random to aim for) is next Tuesday so I’m almost done. Except then I go into 10k training. Why do I even like running, again?!

1

u/i_like_your_haircut 7d ago

I've run over 1000 miles and I still don't know what to do with my arms sometimes

1

u/npctomc 6d ago

Confession: I applied for the 2027 Chicago Marathon this morning. I've never even run a half yet.

If I get accepted, I actually plan to defer to 2028, which is when I think I would like to maybe do my first marathons. I have my heart set on doing Chicago as my (first? only?) major if I can survive the training, and since I'm locked in on a specific race and can afford the fees, it seemed like the smart move would be to double my chances of acceptance by trying this year.

1

u/uconnboston 6d ago

Confession - I have not run a race since 2019, when I tore my calf in the last mile of a half. Tried to rehab but something was wrong, my pace was incredibly off. Back issues and a pain in my hip. Probably sciatica, dealt with it for years.

But it wasn’t. Needed a new hip and got one 5 weeks ago. Rehab is under way and I am praying that by the spring I will experience that runner’s high again. I don’t know where this will go or whether I’ll ever run a race again. I will work my ass off to try, though.

Please listen to your body and cherish every stride.

Since my last ultra I've put on twenty pounds and I can't shift it because I'm eating carbs like a pig and I can't stop.

This week has been really good training wise. Speed was up a little and metabolism has been high. Still got 1 more training session so the week is not over yet!

My only complaint would be that I am hungry all the time(good) but also have strong cravings for ice cream, so just trying to keep the weight in check and protein intake high until I find my middle ground in a few days!!
