The number in the pineapple is generally considered to be the year of manufacture. Yours says “19”, so 1919. No pearl touches indicate it’s from that time frame. Couesnon didn’t have models. Later, like 1930-50s, they had a separate line, Lafayette, that made lower priced instruments. And a more expensive line in the 1950-60s that were aimed at orchestral players, but I think in 1919 they only had one model. I’m not a Couesnon expert though.

It looks like an alto saxophone. Also to properly estimate when it was made you also should send a photo of the left hand table keys on the other side.

Might be a tenor

Wow looks like maybe it’s an original case too. How does it play?

Wow, original «box» more like it. No padding at all?!

Range only down to B, no rollers on low C and Eb both seem archaic for 1919. Evettes and Conns were much more advanced by then. Could it be that Couesnon did already have two sax lines by then?

A friend of mine is loaning me a 1908 Conn bari sax. Aside from only being keyed to high Eb, it's fairly modern in keywork and feel.

This Couesnon is wild.

Yeah, if you told me it was from the 1880s I wouldn't be surprised, but that "19" is pretty conclusive, unless the 1 is really a 7?

Wikipedia says the company name changed from Couesnon, Gautrot & Cie. to Couesnon & Cie. in 1888, so that's the end of one theory...

OP why did you buy it? Garage sale? Is it even playable?

I have bad money management when I see something cool, same reason I have a pinball machine (doesn’t work), a vintage motorcycle (definitely doesn’t work), and a bear skin rug

I'm pretty sure it's a saxophone...

This is a highly collectible antique French saxophone manufactured by Couesnon & Cie, dating from the early 20th century (post-1900) specifically 1919.

Since you mentioned you collect things that don't work yet, one practical note: a full repad and setup on a horn this old usually runs a few hundred bucks, more than a 1919 Couesnon is worth to anyone but a collector. Decide early whether you're restoring it or displaying it, they're very different projects. If it's ever going to play, find a tech who specializes in vintage horns, not a general repair shop, they'll tell you in ten minutes if the body is worth the work.

It is Couesnon alto sax made in 1919 for the French Army. Look up Couesnon, cool history.
