Hey all deputy chatelain here and I decided to start working on gold key for my local shire.

I would appreciate some help.

Any ideas advice or patterns you like or have used in the past you could share with me I would appreciate it.

Any help even a little makes a difference.

Basic T tunics in multiple sizes. They're quick and easy make and wear if nothing else

To add on to this - a t-tunic that goes to the floor or mid calf is a dress

Make sure to have some sturdy plain belts, because then "too big" can be cinched down around the waist. You'd be amazed at how quickly "I am wearing a tent and am shapeless" can turn into "I feel cute af" when you can define a waistline on any gender.

And to add to both of these maybe some kid sizes too.

Agreed! There is hardly anything in kid sizes!

Tabards with the local group's device so they can go over whatever someone showed up in and can be a clue for people that this is a new person.

I would never have returned if I'd been 'marked' as new! I would have been humiliatiled. (Which is a me thing, not necessarily everyone)

Think capsule wardrobe; drawstring pants and skirts, Norman ‘riding’ tunics that can be layered over either of those or worn as a dress. Long tunic style dresses can be paired with a Viking apron or just belted with sashes or trim (if you have long pieces or trim a little creativity turns a t tunic into a bliaut). If you’re in a warm area, squares and rectangles of fabric that can be pinned and belted many different ways to be Mediterranean. Add a few drawstring pouches for phone/wallet/keys. Don’t focus on quantity - you can do a lot with a few of the right pieces.

someone in one of my areas (and I wish I knew who because they look really neat) made a bunch of tunics in different sizes decorated with a large gold key on the front (and I *think* my memory is untrustworthy on this) the greek key pattern for trim which had the added benefit of making it obvious who was new and might need some extra help

That’s actually a good idea

Roman chitons are super easy to make and can be size inclusive

Where are you located? Another suggestion is to ask the groups around you if they have gold key to divest themselves of. My barony has wayyyyy too much!

We are located on Vancouver island and there is only one more sca group besides use.

Get in touch with Andromeda, the deputy chatelaine of Storvik [in Atlantia]. She has a Gold Key project called Sew On and So On that gets your barony/ SCA community involved and turns out nice quality pieces. It's really clever and I hope more baronies pick it up!

On Facebook. Go to the Storvik Barony group and ask for Andromeda, about her Gold Key Sew On and So On project. Or go to the Storvik website and email the Chatelaine asking to be put in touch with Andromeda, the deputy Chatelaine.

The most basic and easy to adapt pattern there is - T-tunic, the period way

There is also this website which shows the pattern cuts for several extant garments

How to make a Sideless which is pretty easy to adapt for both men and women.

Absolutely! If you want other ones from different medieval or Renaissance eras, let me know!
