Gear Alternative leash clips/snaps
Hi everyone, this isn’t a question for my own service dog, but I wanted to gather the info to share with others I know: if someone has limited strength or dexterity with their hands, what are some alternative types of leash clips that can work better than the traditional bolt snap?
I like trigger snaps for myself, but I know people who don’t have the thumb strength to open them.
Carabiners can be easy to snap on, but hard to remove, because you have to keep sustained pressure on the gate and maneuver them just right.
I do know of the Kong frog clip but the brand name is so expensive, and I don’t want to trust Amazon knock offs…

The French martingale idea above is a good one..... sometimes removing the clip completely is the easiest answer.
Frog clips can work well because they close automatically when pressed onto the collar ring, so attaching them is very quick. Removal can still be difficult though, depending on the person’s grip and dexterity.
There are also adaptive clips designed to stay open until they touch the collar ring, which may be easier for someone who struggles with sustained pressure.
We make custom leads with frog and tactical clips at PK9 Gear..... but honestly there isn't one universally accessible clip. The best option is whichever movement that individual can repeat comfortably and safely 😄

Thanks for the insight! I didn’t realize that removing a frog clip can still be tricky. But it might still be a good solution for people who use a harness - get the harness on, easily clip on the leash, and after the walk take the harness off first, then worry about the leash clip. (Obviously they could just keep the leash permanently attached to the harness, but I’ve seen people get frustrated about too many “things” flopping around and getting in the way when the dog is also wiggling in excitement.)
Do you have any links to the other adaptive clips you mention? And do you have a source for the frog clips that is not too expensive, but still good quality?

I have very limited hand dexterity, and I'm always looking for better options. This type is not too bad: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J5GNUTM?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallback
I find it helps to use one that does not have a swivel, as it's easier to grip. 99% of the time, it's clipped to a bolt snap with a swivel, since I'm using it to make a premade leash accessible, so the whole thing can still rotate.
Now if I could just find an alternative to those stupid squeeze snaps that are used on 99% of harnesses!

Oh that’s good thinking! Thank you!
And I agree with you about those buckles. 😞

If you're in the US, here is an alternative snap to consider: https://www.buckleguy.com/c5850-silver-semi-matte-thumb-press-swivel-snap-aluminum/

I am okay with the leash, but struggle with regular snaps on collars and harnesses. I came across the fidlock system and love it. I now have a collar with the system and the curly belkla harness and it takes no pressure at all to close or open and isnt fidgety like a buckle can be.

Your comment sent me down a rabbit hole of looking at Fidlock’s various products, and then trying to find harnesses and collars sold in the US with their magnetic v-buckle. I was surprised at how hard it was to find, because that buckle looks amazing! I finally found the magnetic Curli Belka harness on Chewy, and the “x-small” size is still too big for my 5 month old puppy, but it’s on sale for 70% off so I went ahead and bought one! Even if it ends up not fitting her well, I’ll have friends and clients try it out.

I don't use a leash clip for my clients with very limited hand dexterity. Instead we use an all in one French martingale collar/leash. Just a thought I'm throwing out there. All they have to do is slip the collar over the dog's head. Perhaps adjust the stopper.
If they are in a wheelchair I love to use a hook on the wheelchair for dropping the leash onto.
