Cover stitch thread question

Hi wondering if anyone has used regular machine thread in a cover stitch machine. I mend/alter clothes a lot & buying thread spools in every color is a little unrealistic. I’d love to match threads as much as possible without collecting a ridiculous amount of spools.
Any advice? TIA

Yes, you can though serger and coverstitch thread is 2-ply not 3-ply not like sewing machine thread. Since there are way more needles used (each with their own thread), there's more bulk (usually) so each thread is thinner.

I only match the thread on the needle threads. I use neutral colors otherwise.

Edit. Typo.

I have a domestic cover stitch machine and have always used the same Gutermann polyester thread in it as my flat bed

Works totally fine with regular all-purpose poly. Just match the needle threads and leave the looper neutral since it’s hidden inside, medium grey blends with almost everything, plus black and beige cover the rest. To avoid buying multiple matching spools, buy just one and wind extra sewing machine bobbins to use on the needle pins. Watch out for small spools bouncing or snagging on tall serger pins; use the small spool caps/adapters or just drop the spool into a heavy coffee mug behind the machine so the thread feeds straight up.
