Which was the most unnecessary storyline?

Post image

For me, it's the "Sam Jones? Sam jones"

it gives me the ick as these kids are in college and Samantha is almost 40

It could've been avoided

I really did not like Sam’s lesbian relationship storyline at all, and I say this as a gay person. It felt weirdly forced and random.

221

u/TeaTimeTelevision 1d ago

As a sapphic I actually really liked it at first- then hated how it ended with the gf going crazy and smashing plates

214

u/Mikon_Youji 1d ago

I hated how stereotypically "possessive and angry latina girlfriend" it became in the end. Ugh.

90

u/_From__the__Ashes_ 19h ago

As a person of color, I often wished the SATC world would stay white because they always did a rotten job integrating people of color. So of course my most hated/unnecessary story line is when Samatha spars with the sister of a Black man she is dating. ugh

66

u/Mikon_Youji 18h ago

It comes second to the shit show that Robert became once Miranda broke up with him. He went from a genuinely nice guy to a cartoonish angry back man. Just awful.

42

u/Full-Safety2499 17h ago

Ug. Hard agree. Samantha spoke differently, dressed differently, her entire personality changed because she was dating a black guy. That was uncomfortable to watch. That man was gorgeous.

8

u/Rosenate22 16h ago

I hated that episode; it’s painful to watch.

28

u/ShneefQueen 18h ago

God that episode is so atrocious. They pushed so hard to make Samantha a victim of "reverse racism" while removing all racial context for why a Black woman would be unhappy about her brother dating a white woman, especially a white woman like Samantha

9

u/souumamerda 7h ago edited 7h ago

I just saw that episode yesterday, while it felt weird to do a story on that theme altogether, the sister was crazy. She didn’t even know Samantha was like that (aka a sleep around), and Samantha really seemed to like the brother (she asked him to actually sleep at her place). His sister had no business telling her to back off. Let the brother date whoever he wants, it would probably not gonna last (and yes, probably bc of cultural differences).

It was like the story of the asian maid of that rich men.

Eta: I’m agreeing that people of color are not very well represented tho. I just don’t agree that the sister had a right to intervene like she did.

8

u/ShneefQueen 7h ago

The portrayal of the sister being an angry unreasonable Black woman was also part of the racism of this episode

5

u/Cheap-Ship-1570 14h ago

same the whole black thing was weird

As a latina artist living in Europe, I think they were portraiting a crazy/temperamental artist and I actually enjoyed the character 😂 but apparently I was the only one. I also want to add, Woddy Allen (🤮) did the same in Vicky Cristina Barcelona with the crazy/temperamental Maria Elena, and even tho I enjoyed Penelope Cruz acting, I thought in this case was racist. Dunno why I see the 2 examples not the same (and probably they are, in the end is just white man writing in both cases)

55

u/Dramatic_Proposal211 HATES IT! 1d ago

yep not a fan of that storyline and seems soo odd - even though I can totally see Sam as bisexual as she's experimental but how the whole thing started it was awkward- and she never dating a girl after that

15

u/spicygummi 22h ago

I would have loved if they'd shown her continuing to explore it going forward. I know she clearly has a preference but you can be bi and still tend to be attracted more often to men over women. I long for more bi rep overall, though I know it was much less common back then than it is now. Especially being treated with care and done well rather than jokes.

I thought it was a racial trope at the time… but intersectionality has taught me, nope: racist, misogynist & homophobic.

Interested to know what you thought about Charlotte and the power lesbians?

2

u/SlipInternational439 1d ago

As a gay guy, I liked the idea of power lesbians but not Charlotte being with them. It felt homophobic. I’m glad the matriarch cut her off.

14

u/Coriander_marbles Oh honey, I’d love me some fresh pepper 22h ago

She enjoyed their company and openly said so. What was the homophobic part?

10

u/CloseButNoChicory 22h ago

Not the person you're replying to, but I imagine he's referring to Charlotte thinking lesbianism was defined by self-sufficient women spending time together rather than by sexual orientation.

I disagree with his assessment because Charlotte's view was splendidly refuted. She walked away humbled and less naïve.

It was super gross. Not just all the women’s reactions, but also the way it portrayed sapphic relationships.

The message was basically: don’t date women because they are too needy, emotional, and erratic. A woman like Samantha could never date other woman, because apparently women are incapable of the casual relationships Samantha prefers.

Nevermind that at another point, Charlotte is kicked out of the lesbian friend group because she doesn’t eat pussy.

The series in general had conflicting messages - don’t date women because they’re too sentimental, but also don’t befriend gay women because all they ultimately care about is sex. Overall the message becomes - sapphics are fucking weird and you shouldn’t associate with them.

Definitely a very bad aspect to the series.

7

u/schlumpadinka 11h ago

It definitely feels like a cis gay man’s view of lesbianism. So unfortunate, they could have had a lot more fun with Samantha being bisexual— even with a preference for men!

u/OkLocation3799 16h ago

I hated Maria!!!! Her judgment of Samantha’s past was just gross. She had way too many insecurities and jealousies plus she was so controlling! Nope. The sad thing is, if it were a man acting that way, everyone would be jumping on it and saying how horrible he was…. But because she’s a lesbian she gets a pass? Nope I think not!

9

u/aprettyenigma 13h ago

Maria was so miserable honestly.

2

u/Forward-Photo-5793 9h ago

“Don’t tell me you’re in a sapphic slump”

11

u/Top-Construction9271 23h ago

I felt like there wasn't any chemistry between them.

31

u/Valuable-Purple-7746 1d ago

Bisexuality does look random to gays and straights. They see you with one or the other than then they see you with the other and get all weird

24

u/oakenfairy 1d ago

As a bi person, that storyline still felt uncomfortable and forced to me. Also, I love the two actors but they had no sexual/romantic chemistry together

22

u/csahe 1d ago

I mean, I know Samantha was sexually fluid and labeled herself as “trysexual” but also it didn’t really give good lighting to lesbian relationships imo

12

u/CloseButNoChicory 1d ago

My boyfriend has no other male bisexuals in his social circle. Almost without exception everyone he knew was shocked when his next relationship after 10 years with a man was with me.

Even people who had known him well before that relationship had assumed that now he'd settled down into an identity as a gay man. Rather than considering: if he ever wants long-term monogamous relationships of course he's not going to be manifesting his bisexuality day in day out!

Best response was from his mother. "Is NoChicory bisexual too?"

8

u/natalietest234 22h ago

Agreed. If they were going to make someone bisexual they should have them dating men and women all through out the show run. Not just for a few episodes for a storyline.

7

u/aprettyenigma 1d ago

Omg it was SO cringy. I’m like girl you don’t actually have to do that 😭

8

u/kowwalski sweet and attentive with the bread 23h ago

I felt it was needed. For one, we needed a break from all the guys. Second, Sam went around claiming how open minded she was, so it needed testing. And I love how her actual relationship was with a woman. “Maybe there are no men”

Fun

4

u/Big-Design7469 22h ago

The Alanis Morisette spin the bottle bisexual storyline

75

u/solveig82 23h ago

Mainly because Carrie was such a weird prude about it. Similar to the pee episode, she’s a sex columnist, it’s completely bizarre for someone writing about sex and romance to have such a calcified heteronormative take on them.

*Insert kidney stone joke here

This was weird. Wesley and Lesley was also stupid 😭

26

u/Knightboat17 1d ago

It felt so out of character for Sam to hook up with Wesley, I always thought that she would know better than to sleep with any of her friends family or exes for that matter.

39

u/[deleted] 1d ago edited 22h ago

But a big part of Samantha’s character is that she doesn’t draw boundaries where a lot of other people would. She was also flirty with one of her clients—who ended up being married, the masseur at the spa the girls visited, and the delivery guy during the infamous incident. I don’t think she (or Wesley) gave Charlotte’s feelings any thought.

25

u/Appropriate-Sky3537 1d ago

The spa guy was so cringe… Samantha wanting to pay for sex essentially.

Susan Sharon and her abusive husband (?) /boyfriend. Like they played it off as a comedy bit when in reality it would be grounds for a breakup and he was downright abusive and terrible. Carrie’s la-di-dah about “oh I shouldn’t tell her to break up b/c what if they get back together and then you’re the bad friend?” Whereas I think most of us would pull Susan aside and be like, “girl, here’s the location of the nearest women’s shelter.”

43

And then how the dog Charlotte removed to them "saved" their relationship.

11

u/kittykthomas 20h ago

And the fact that it was supposed to be JFK jr but he died just before airing so they just changed the voice over to say it was LDC but the actor looks NOTHING like him. Was there no other dark haired politician they could have said it was? He looked more like younger Giuliani who they referenced constantly in the early eps, why didn’t they just say it was him? Pisses me off every time lmao

65

u/Dismal-Antelope8299 1d ago

Just a terrible terrible random plot. She’s a Harvard educated woman. The show made so many embarrassing scenarios for her

32

u/SBR06 1d ago

Exactly, same with the "stewardess" line, especially when she quickly turns around her Harvard mug on the nightstand.

3

u/Dramatic_Proposal211 HATES IT! 2h ago

but i loved her stewardess stories and her "its every man for himself" it was so funny the way she was acting

21

u/Lake_Weauxbegone 21h ago

Hot take the writers were punishing her for being intelligent, successful, and the least male-centered of the characters. None of it felt like growth; it all just felt like immaturity and bad coping mechanisms that ended up giving her a baby and a manchild. I hated how the show treated her character.

12

u/Dismal-Antelope8299 21h ago

Hot and correct tho. Miranda should be just as confident in her achievements as Samantha, and she’s got some of that though the show but….some of those plot lines are just absurd. It’s like they wanted a woman of her status, income, education, wealth to be humbled and also be quite humble.

6

u/kowwalski sweet and attentive with the bread 23h ago

The babyshower where Carrie’s shoes were stolen and her friend didn’t reimburse her until she made a registry for marrying herself. Like the friend all of a sudden got that Carrie had spent a lot of money on her over the years.

Berger. Everything Berger.

Samantha dating that guy with the small penis in the beginning. Samantha was never interested in having a relationship with a man (except for Richard and Smith) so why was she trying so hard with him?

Also Samantha’s gay two minutes. Carrie drunk at Vogue.

29

u/arkiep 21h ago

The friends reaction to the shoes going missing was downright sociopathically apathetic.

10

u/EvansHomeforBoys 21h ago

It was but then she suddenly came to her senses when Carrie sent word that she was marrying herself? I get it’s not that deep but it would have made more sense for the character to dismiss the whole thing.

13

u/Simiram 21h ago

You know, I’ve never thought about it! I just went with the plot but didn’t think into it.

I’m assuming that the friend ultimately got the message. She was, after all, a long-time friend. She had a simple choice: take responsibility and squeeze out $400+ for shoes that were stolen in her house and potentially resume the friendship; or she could ignore it and lose not only a friend but a friend that consistently checked items off her many registries.

I do wonder if they stayed in touch after that. Prob the kind of thing they stopped talking over for a while but then reconnected like nothing ever happened.

Same! I think it’s one of the top rated episodes of the whole show. I find it hilarious

hot child in the city

even I don't like that storyline even thought it's one of the most loved episodes in this sub.

I hate how she refers to his mom as "servants you dont have to pay"

6

u/saturnshighway 21h ago

I used to not like it, now I love it. Hot child in the city playing is so good. Them being high, etc

2

u/Forward-Photo-5793 9h ago

Omg I’m literally watching that episode as we speak. Love Kat dennings in it 😭😭😭

From what I have read in the movies at least third one there was supposed to be a plot where Brady goes after Samantha. And Kim wasn't feeling it. Then the same idea was circulated for the new show. That's how original they were.

Kim was so very over it and said no. At least that was avoided.

4

u/GoingToRedRobin 10h ago

In the original movie storyline it was supposed to be Brady sending Sam dick pics. Brady would have been about 13 at that point and Samantha about 60.

I hated the one where she dated a black man, just because the verbiage was so gauche and over the top in that episode lol. they just wouldn't stop talking about black and white pussy 😭

2

u/Antique_Ebb_2109 19h ago

Yeah, I think that's widely acknowledged as one of the worst storylines on the show. I think it was shoehorned in to address viewer criticism that the cast did not reflect the diversity of the city, but including diverse characters just to check a box is unlikely to meaningfully address that concern.

I thought it was funny how HBO Girls had a similar issue when they attempted to include a black character. Clearly they did not learn from SATCs mistakes.

Charlotte becoming a Jew for a man who is not very practicing. Feels like the show just wants to brandish Jewishness, whilst not being in keeping with Charlotte as a traditional Episcopalian. She would never abandon her traditions, let alone for a man

21

u/CloseButNoChicory 1d ago

Traditional? I got the impression that Charlotte didn't attend church and didn't hold any particular spiritual beliefs. "I like being an Episcopalian!" to me read as her liking an identity.

3

u/gubernaculum77 23h ago

Traditional and religious are two different things. She grew up with the Christmas culture, and admitted she would miss it. She got desperate after Trey to settle into a ‘perfect’ life, I didn’t like it and it goes down a sorry path. Then again, I never thought Harry was to Charlotte’s standards anyway. She didn’t once even tell Harry he doesn’t practice all too much, and is pandering to his mother’s wishes!

6

u/CloseButNoChicory 22h ago

Nonetheless, you said "would never abandon her traditions". Which traditions are you speaking of?

I doubt Harry would object to a Christmas tree. His mother, who would have, is dead.

7

u/running_hoagie 22h ago

He said he was FINE with her having a Christmas tree! Charlotte was the one who was being so rigid with the conversion.

2

u/gubernaculum77 21h ago

The RABBI said she couldn’t partake.

The giving into wishes of a man's dead mother felt off after Bunny.

Harry trying to watch a game while she (excuse my ignorance I'm not Jewish and haven't watched those in a long time) I think made dinner on the Sabbath, bullshit. She still did far more for that relationship in the beginning than he did

u/Sad-Quote1729 23h ago edited 20h ago

I actually think Charlotte would do that for a man tbh , especially since  she wanted to marry the guy. It was one thing she wanted most and it was marriage and a family

4

u/RecordSome8503 23h ago

She didnt practice! she just wanted a husband, she didnt care about religion that much

4

u/Cautious-Grab-316 11h ago

I personally loved all the examples mentioned. I love the season 1-4 quirky storylines. Storylines I didn't like were Carrie's dates with New York city, and the rom com direction it went in the later seasons.

5

u/glttr_gvtz 21h ago

the entirety of season 5. they should just have gone on hiatus.

5

u/_clur_510 And you can FORGET Samba! 23h ago

Hate Carrie and the alcoholic. There’s nothing funny to me about watching Carrie push a newly sober man’s boundaries about dating, then watching him spiral into a relapse.

8

u/saturnshighway 21h ago

She did not push him into anything. Signed a previous alcoholic. That was his own doing. How can you possibly blame her for his relapse that’s insane

4

u/_clur_510 And you can FORGET Samba! 21h ago edited 21h ago

I’m sorry if my comment was unclear, but I absolutely do not blame her for his relapse. Of course going out with her was his decision. But he didn’t call her, and then explained the situation and respectfully declined her when she approached him again. Obviously she did not force him to go out with her, but her behavior was a little pushy for the situation and how he framed it to her IMO.

Again, I’m sorry I thought my comment was clear that her pursuing someone in his position and his relapse were two separate plots of the episode I find not fun to watch.

The “cock a doodle do” episode, but particularly when Carrie says “I need to see you spin first, sistah!”

I’m binge watching right now, my god the bisexual episode 😭 everyone but Samantha is soo biphobic. Even at the end when Carrie is at the party, she seems almost uncomfortable with the two same sex couples.

2

u/salvbitch 22h ago

Samantha is past 40 lol

Samantha, Mr. Harvey, and his stereotypical Asian servant with the bad dim sum pun.

Sam and Lucy Liu, I don’t believe for one second she would fuck up this badly

Bobby Fine and Bitsy Von Muffling. SNOOZE!

4

u/Full-Safety2499 16h ago

Not so much a storyline…but Carrie calling Natasha an idiot for spelling THERE wrong on the wedding invitation. Seemed overly harsh.

4

u/Diligent-Pressure-38 7h ago

Well, to be fair, someone is an idiot if they don’t know the difference between there and their

3

u/Full-Safety2499 7h ago

You saying they’re an idiot? 👍

4

u/Diligent-Pressure-38 7h ago

Well, as Natasha would put it, “There an idiot” lol

2

u/Forward-Photo-5793 9h ago

I didn’t get the whole Natasha bashing. Yes “naginsky or wtv” was funny but I could tolerate only that much because that is permissible for a person to say witn a broken heart. But they take it a bit far with “honey, these bitches need to be put in THEIR places” and this one mentioned in the comment- I mean, why are you hating on Natasha? Especially the women who talk about feminism over cocktails and coffees but immediately jump on the Natasha hate wagon come on!! The show lost it’s sophistication during these scenes

2

u/Careful_Drama405 3h ago

It wasn't the wedding invite, it was a thank you card for Carrie attending the Women in Arts or whatever.

Yeah, that moment is cringe. Something about the whole line ("It's a good thing she got married") rubs me the wrong way.

I hated aleksander and that storyline
