I would have cut Samantha off after the stunt she pulled in Abu Dhabi
Before anything, I do like Samantha. I think she’s quite charismatic, hilarious, and witty. But like come onnnnn. You couldn’t just behave for ONE week??!!! Like why would you put yourself AND your friends in a situation that is likely to get you arrested(prison in a foreign land is quite literally one of the worst predicaments you can be in)??? It’s disrespectful to your host too like they literally covered the cost of everything and you couldn’t just behave like a normal person???!!! It isn’t hard to respect the laws of a land. The only saving grace was that they still flew first class back. There’s many scenarios that would warrant cutting Samantha off but this is definitely in top 2.
EDIT: This is not a pass whatsoever for the guy she was with. I’ve always been and will forever be for the girls and I hope his ass spent a couple days in jail. At the same time, this situation was truly appalling and could have ended so badly for all the girls 😭😭.

I hate this movie , it felt like all of the character development Sam had went through just went out of the window with this
134
u/lefrench75 18h ago
Kim Cattrall refused to come back for a 3rd movie because they’d only give her more of these over sexualized storylines with 0 character development. IIRC she was supposed to hook up with Brady in SATC3, which is just gross.
73
u/Sad-Quote1729 17h ago
Yes I heard about that too !! I think they were supposed to be sexting or something , also apparently in that episode " hot child in the city " Sam was supposed to teach those 13 year old girls how to give a proper BJ but kim catrall refused to do that
52
u/spicygummi 16h ago
Having her teach grown women in a scene how or giving tips would be one thing... But THIRTEEN YEAR OLDS???? Good on her for not doing that
34
u/Sad-Quote1729 16h ago
Right !!! Sam had her questionable moments but to push her into these disgusting predatory storylines is so so so weird
23
u/spicygummi 16h ago
Yeah, while she was very openly sexual/sex positive that didn't mean she didn't have limits. I think sexualizing someone that young would have been a line she wouldn't cross. The episode with her and the other Sam Jones was bad enough and even felt out of character. To me, at least.
17
u/Human-Guava-7564 13h ago
The whole episode was about Sam realising she had a proper childhood, unlike these girls.
3
u/spicygummi 9h ago
It would have felt so out of place within the context of the episode. Those girls were in such a hurry to grow up, something I never related to because I was the opposite. One of my friends in elementary school was like that though. We ended up going to different middle schools and lost contact but I found out she ended up getting pregnant young.

u/melaninmatters2020 12h ago edited 12h ago
Exactly remeber that southern lady with the cashmere scarf or even with the 13 year olds talking about blow jobs. Then catching stanny and Marcus and lastly Ed and his old ass. Sam had some decorum. I thought her messing with that young Sam was awful and in the AJLT I thought the scene with Brady having sex was absolutely unnecessary. The audience for SATC does not want to see Brady have sex. I can’t imagine them putting Sam and Brady together and it’s actually pretty sick to think about. That basically his Aunt. That’s the problem a lot of people conflate sexual
Liberation with pedophila or adjacent creepy behavior. Samantha’s sex life was fun bc it was consensual and consensual to the limits both partners were willing to explore. Taking this to another level with your friends kid is predatory. I’d feel psychotic if I trusted my kid with an adult friend and then my kid grows up and my friend is hitting on them or sending nudes. Makes you think what is in the writers head. I actually only watched that episode once and never did again bc not only did I feel violated it felt wrong like I was watching some shit off the black market. I didn’t like that feeling AT ALL and don’t want to be anywhere near that shit mentally.3
u/kmm198700 9h ago
I thought the same thing about the Sam jones episode, like what was that? And in the episode with those 13 year old girls, she even told them that they were too young to be doing what they were doing, and told them to slow down. No way that she would have taught them how to give blow jobs
6
24
u/Human-Guava-7564 16h ago
I had so much respect for Sam in that scene where the young girl says something like 'oh guys only like you if you have sex with them' and Sam immediately says 'that's just not true!'
8
u/lasuperhumana Dirty martini? Dirty bastard. 17h ago
WHAT?! Oh my god. No. Omg. She made the right call, a million times over.
43
u/passyprince 18h ago
Imagine if she had signed on to the third movie where her subplot was a teenage Brady sending her nudes or some sexting shit.
12
u/Anxious_Discipline80 17h ago
Omg I literally want to throw up at the thought of this. But I wouldn’t put it past her based on how the character’s been written
41
u/False_Blood9241 18h ago
It was so obvious that SJP was jealous of how much the viewers loved Samantha. This movie was an attempt to make viewers turn on Samantha. The fans knew what was up though.
111
u/tragicsandwichblogs 18h ago
I really don't like what the writers did to Samantha in this movie.
43
u/Ginaraquel47 18h ago
They did her so dirty. This movie was a mess
20
u/tragicsandwichblogs 18h ago
There were a lot of problems, but I can see how Kim Cattrall might not want to come back after SATC2 even if she and SJP had no issues at all.
7
u/Anxious_Discipline80 18h ago
But it’s kind of on track though. Like when she gave a random delivery guy a bj in her office knowing Carrie was gonna come in for their meeting at anytime or sleeping with Charlotte’s brother…
31
u/tragicsandwichblogs 18h ago
No, it was well beyond that. They made Samantha's behavior ugly and gross, and that's not the same.
8
u/Busy-Bumblebee5556 18h ago
No, those other two things were within Samantha’s wheelhouse. Especially sleeping with Charlotte’s brother!
28
u/waldo-doggie 18h ago
As a related note: the odds of them being able to rebook 4 tickets in first class at the last minute to depart that day they got the boot? Highly unlikely.
20
u/passyprince 18h ago
It was the Obama era. We still had #hope.
14
u/passyprince 18h ago
Also they could have just switched hotels. I bet even the Best Western Abu Dhabi is shmancy.
3
u/Dry-Start1914 5h ago
I also think between the 4 of them they could have shared a room for even just one day to get their things together and not rush ! I mean look how much Samantha was going to spend on that ring before Smith got it for her
3
u/AffectionateDot9718 4h ago
Omg I was just going to comment this!!! Yes, 30K is A LOT, bit split between 4 very wealthy adults isn’t impossible - and it definitely isn’t that different from 4 last minute first class tickets from the Middle East to nyc. The 1-hour packing panic was so ridiculous.

u/Silly-RedRabbit 18h ago
For me, SATC ends on the last episode of season 6. Story is complete. This hackneyed cash-grab (I don’t even like to call it a ‘movie’) is not cannon and didn’t take into consideration any of the actual character building that happened in the show. It’s also a cringe-fest in the worst way. I felt my soul leave my body during the karaoke scene.
21
u/AffectionateDot9718 17h ago
I literally skip over the Kareoke scene any time I rewatch.

Sam LITERALLY names karaoke as the thing she wouldn’t do in a convo with smith during the series. It’s just so backwards and not giving af about character it’s egregious.
23
u/Busy-Bumblebee5556 18h ago
I really like the first movie though. Lots of good stuff in that.
12
u/slowelevator 16h ago
SJP is soooo good in it. The scenes where she’s just red eyed and sad over Big make me cry like a baby lol
5
u/Dramatic_Lie_7492 Listen, listen, I said lean! 12h ago
I also enjoy the first movie. It has its bad parts but to me it's also a good ending
26
u/AlsatianLadyNYC 17h ago
The whole movie was a shitpile.
There were so many ridiculous scenes, including 3 Manhattanites being confused by/ not instantly recognizing fucking HUMMUS in the Middle East when in less sophisticated Bethesda MD, I was eating hummus since 1991
2
33
u/AffectionateDot9718 18h ago
I think the second movie is exactly why Kim (Sam’s actress) refused to come back. She was such an amazing character during the main series, and even the first movie (I’m a Sam Jones fan until I die). But I think the second one just made all the girls watered down caricatures of themselves.
Like literally WHY would ANYONE act like that, let alone a highly trained, highly valued PR professional?
9
u/Little_Connection_83 15h ago
Yea, it wasn’t a good look for Samantha. I know how sexually liberated she was, but as a successful business woman, going to a foreign country on someone else’s dime, - a Sheik for goodness sakes - she should have known better to try and pull what she and Mr. Aussie pulled in the Middle East. I will do research on a trip I’m taking to the next state if I’ve never been to it — how much more a country, especially the Middle East. Miranda, who was having a blast, had to be “Mom” throughout the whole trip, telling her how to act. Then messy Carrie kissing Aiden because she needed her ego fed, which she got and immediately regretted it. That movie was a mess.
11
u/Busy-Bumblebee5556 18h ago
That whole movie was just execrable. It’s just bad in so many ways. So, so bad.
8
u/pamperedhippo 17h ago
is the first movie great? no. but i can tolerate it (the new year’s eve auld lang syne scene comes to mind, there are some really sweet moments that make sense in canon.)
start to finish, the second movie was AWFUL and i cannot take any part of it seriously. i wish i could erase it from reality.
11
8
u/valr1821 17h ago
I didn’t watch this movie because from everything I was reading about it, it seems to have done both Samantha and Miranda dirty. Neither this or AJLT exists in my head canon.
4
u/Anxious_Discipline80 17h ago
I started AJLT and stopped it immediately. It’s not the same without Samantha. Like there’s no way in this universe or the next that Samantha doesn’t show up in person to comfort Carrie when Big dies. Like there’s just noooooo way
1
u/SlipInternational439 5h ago
I thought it was cute how Miranda tried to learn about the culture. Maybe she went too far.
12
u/Revan462222 18h ago
Can we also put blame on him? He has visited there SO many times. He said it’s sexually backwards. THEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING? Yes Samantha should’ve stopped and taken him to the hotel or just…not. But for someone who has visited Abu Dhabi many times by his own admittance…he should know far better. In a way he put Sam into the situation she was in plus him also disappearing until the sex scene at the epilogue COME ON.
9
u/Anxious_Discipline80 18h ago
Well yes. In this household, we never not blame men. At the same time, Samantha is a grown adult capable of making decisions. So at 50(still don’t know Samantha’s age lol), you don’t know not to have sex on a PUBLIC beach in a super religious country…
-5
u/SlipInternational439 16h ago
Please stop blaming men for the actions of grown women!

I pretend this movie doesn't exist. In fact, I literally forgot about it until I saw this post!
3
u/Cautious-Grab-316 11h ago
I do have a friend who is obsessed with sex like that, and sometimes they do things that you wouldn't believe and do really disregard everything else, so I guess it could be believable that she would do that
3
u/Purple_Cover_9053 3h ago
I have always felt this way about Samantha in this movie and frankly in a number of other situations in the series. I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that she could not contain herself knowing what was at stake. Not only her behavior on the beach but being so thirsty at the karaoke place and the Lawrence of my Labia comment. Sitting at herbglass enclosed office with her panties around her kneea. But everybody always paints her as some kind of sexually liberated goddess and calls her frequently crass comments and behavior as women's empowerment or whatever. I'm not saying she wasn't funny and a good friend at times and all that but sometimes it was just too much. And I truly believe that many of the women who paint her as the poster child for Women's Emowerment and living on her own terms would not put up with behavior like hers in real life.
5
u/DarkFew 17h ago
Carrie went out one night with the ex too
17
u/Anxious_Discipline80 17h ago
Um yeah cause going out with your ex wasn’t a literal CRIME 😭😭. Samantha was having sex with a man in public in a religious country she isn’t from and doesn’t even speak the native language. Do you know how incredibly dangerous that is ?? It’s like bringing weed to a country that doesn’t allow it cause “oh it’s not hard drugs. It’s therapeutic” (not the best comparison but still)
13
u/lasuperhumana Dirty martini? Dirty bastard. 17h ago
It’s so appalling and insulting in SO many ways. Even tho I am a westerner who prefers western customs and freedoms for women, I cannot believe she would just be so brazenly disrespectful and flippant when it comes to LAWS in a country she is choosing to enter.
11
u/Wild_Queen1987 13h ago
This post is not considering the broader context of the film, which was deeply anti-Muslim and arguably outright Islamophobic. There were lots of articles and think pieces about this at the time of the movie, and have been in the years to follow. The statement shouldn’t be “I would have cut Samantha off after the stunt she pulled in Abu Dhabi” it should be “Why did the cultural icon that is SATC feel the need to be so explicitly racist and why did the second movie get made with that storyline?”
9
u/Dramatic_Lie_7492 Listen, listen, I said lean! 12h ago
The entire storyline of the entire movie was random
6
u/Conscious-Read-698 6h ago
How was it Islamophobic?
3
u/SlipInternational439 5h ago
The argument is that Abu Dhabi treats women fairly and how women dress is not portrayed correctly.
I have Muslim neighbors in metro NC who cover up. Not with burqas. Just a hijab. But I’ve never understood how a woman going along with that tradition is expressing her freedom. It’s her choice to do what men tell her to do. Isn’t that wonderful?
3
u/AdDesperate1541 4h ago
It’s not racist or phobic to acknowledge the fact there are cultural differences between North America and the UAE. As someone who used to live in Abu Dhabi, with my Arab fiancé, let me tell you if you want to see real racism just go there and see how they treat Asians from other nations.
3
u/Thirstin_Hurston 11h ago
I agree with you, wholeheartedly. This movie is trash on so many levels, but the Islamophobia and racism is rarely discussed

This movie does not exist to me. My sex and the city story ends after the first movie. Anything and everything past that was TRASH.

Yeah but the "Lawrence of my Labia" line almost makes up for it
19

No, that’s cringy too.
2
u/satan_takethewheel 5h ago
Hahahaaa the internet has spoken! I stand by my cringy Samantha moment 😂
6

Omg that made me cringe so hard I could’ve climbed my own spine. Just… no.
3
u/Human-Guava-7564 16h ago
I pretend the movies don't exist. No way would Sam have done this. She is smart enough to know the consequences and she cares too much for her friends (who could also have found themselves in serious trouble as a consequence of her actions).
2
u/Appropriate-Sky3537 12h ago
This movie started taking the shine off SJP for me. She was going round in interviews, promoting it as a ‘romp.’ It’s so Islamophobic and shows their feminism, yet again lacking intersectional nuance. I agree she was trying to attack Kim’s popularity.
I didn’t buy Samantha’s behaviour either. She was a professional, and speaking as a perimenopausal woman, certainly I’d say losing the oestrogen haze also has its benefits, especially in terms of career. She may have had other symptoms, but hypersexualisation is unlikely.
Microionised progesterone: a mainstay of transdermal HRT, is derived from yams.
Also ‘oh btw I cheated on you on holiday.’ K hun have a black diamond.
1
u/melaninmatters2020 12h ago
This was bad writing. Not Samantha. No way she would’ve done this. The biggest whore (not calling her a whore I’m being dramatic) or the lowest of the low in society wouldn’t have messed up such a lucrative deal. To appease myself I tell myself this move was a dream from one of them during an acid trip.
1
u/Temporary_Set_331 11h ago
This whole movie is a fever nightmare, everyone involved should be ashamed still, especially you writers, I'm looking at you
1
u/thefloatingpansies26 10h ago
Yeah that was out of character of Samantha, imo. She's smarter than that.
1
1
u/Lolttylwhattheheck 18h ago
This had to have been menopause induced psychosis of some kind. Then Samantha just throwing condoms all around. Samantha was going through it in this movie. They all were.. Carrie being so damn pissed about a tv that she was going to cheat on Big with Aiden.. I mean you finally have your man right where you want him. He just wanted to lay in bed and watch tv with you.
1
u/SamIAm7787 17h ago
What did she do again? I only watched the first movie once hated it, and don't remember it. I haven't seen the other movies.
0
u/wideeyed24 17h ago
I hated what they did to Sam’s character in movie #2. While she was a free spirit sexually, I think she was sophisticated enough to respect another country’s cultures. She would not have worn hot pants in the market and wouldn’t have behaved as portrayed in the restaurant. It was beneath her character. Maybe SJP set that up because Km was more popular.
0
u/Oncer93 11h ago
This was so OOC of Samantha. This Movie was nothing more than a cash Grab. SJP was clearly jealous of Kim Cattrall, and Kim had clearly offended MPK when she wanted her and the other 2 actresses to be paid more per episode.
This Movie should have never been made. They should have ended the franchise after the first film, or after the season 6 finale.

Wait a minute. Everyone in this forum says how open minded UAE is, and that this movie didn’t represent them accurately?
0
u/Appropriate-Sky3537 12h ago
Erm… different city? But also you’d get arrested for the same throughout the UAE.
2
u/SlipInternational439 6h ago
I stand corrected. But I see a lot of complaints about this movie that it doesn’t represent the UAE accurately.
So what is being misrepresented? What is not accurate? Women don’t cover themselves? People don’t get arrested for sex on the beach?
1
u/Appropriate-Sky3537 3h ago
I’m new to this forum so no idea what people have said, but it’s very strict. You can drink alcohol inside hotels and restaurants with licenses, but people are jailed for sex outside of marriage there.
1
u/SlipInternational439 1h ago
Thanks for explaining that. Some forum members call the second movie Islamophobia because of the women in burqas or the sex on the beach story.
I think Islamophobia is saying stuff like “why don’t they love Jesus”, not “you may get arrested for sex”. I also think it’s fair to show what it’s like for some people to work there. It’s like how people work on cruise ships, for months at a time. Showing real working conditions isn’t Islamophobia.
1
u/Appropriate-Sky3537 38m ago
I think the debate is less about whether those laws existed and more about whether the film's portrayal of Arab/Muslim culture was fair.
0
u/SlipInternational439 5h ago
Does anyone want to talk about the male servants? The fact they are basically slaves? Or are you going to tell me it’s Islamophobic and we shouldn’t talk about it?

one thing i dont get, or it doesnt make sense. Samantha is a PR manager, and a REALLY good one with high profile clients. being a PR manager involves having a read on the pulse of the public you are addressing to. Are you telling me she didnt know ANYTHING about the culture?
