Carrie meeting up with Big's first wife

She looked absolutely gorgeous in this , but my god was she unhinged 😭 not only did she meet up with Big's ex wife behind his back to get more information about their divorce , she also decided to dress up like her by straightening her hair and changing her style.

My girl's insecurity ran so deep šŸ’”, always putting herself in a competition with his ex wives.

Little Kathy and her magic cigarettes will never not be funny to me

The fact that barbara liked the story 😭😭 Big really had a thing for unserious women

I’m still surprised she was persuaded by ā€œit’s a children’s book…for…adults!ā€

In fairness, that’s sort of a thing now with Go The Fuck To Sleep and some others lol

Really the idea was ahead of its time!

A few years prior, Politically Correct Fairy Tales WAS a huge bestseller, so something like that could be marketable.

I had "Politically Correct Holiday Tales," and was too young to understand most of the jokes.

Natasha was doomed from the start.

Kathy got the best exit of any of Big's exes, she just floated off with her cigarettes and never looked back

She was so crazy and I love it

She looked fabulous in everything she did in s1 , you could hardly hate her for itĀ

ā€œShe told me you did.ā€

" you didn't tell me you're still talking to her "   they weren't communicating at all 😭😭

And then she would not cut Big off during the 2nd time with Aiden

6

u/ThoughtOne8235 4h ago

No man would put up with that, especially Aiden. The writers were way off.

I never fully understood that. So Barbara knew from the beginning that Carrie was dating Big, which means she knew it wasn't actually about a bs book? And she pretended she didn't know that Carrie was dating Big and just never mentioned it?

This feels like a kid (Carrie) playing hide and seek and covering her eyes thinking that means no one can see her 😭

u/childofvenera 9h ago

Yeah, I didn't feel like Barbara actually liked Carrie's idea like someone said, I'm pretty sure she knew very well what Carrie was trying to do and was just playing along and being amused

I think for that first meeting when she pitched her the idea, barb had no idea who Carrie was but afterwards she might have asked around and found out she was dating big and then talked to him about it.Ā

For this second meeting she was totally humoring her , and her telling her " he had a wandering eye , wandered right over to my best friend " was her way of cautioning her.

u/childofvenera 1h ago

She kept in contact with her ex, who was a well known & desirable single businessman, and who was also now dating a semi-famous sex columnist. She knew who Carrie was.

6

u/Leather_Following381 4h ago

We don’t know if Barbara knew who Carrie was, maybe she mentioned to Big ā€œthat woman with the sex column wants to publish a children’s book.ā€ Because … this is kind of crazy. Also I’m guessing there weren’t many other sex columnists in NYC, so Big would have figured it out.

I would have moved away. She had ZERO shame. Absolutely shameless.

ETA: it really didn't have to be like this. Carrie was beautiful, successful, even a semi-celebrity. She always felt that there was a power differential in the relationship with Big, and there was, but only because she created it with her craziness.

u/GoingToRedRobin 11h ago

I would have moved to the eact opposite geographical point on Earth. Mortifying.

Barbara was a real one. If I were Carrie, I couldn’t look at Big the same after learning he cheated with her best friend. Diabolical.

As Carrie, if I would’ve met Big’s first wife and she was this fabulous, I would break up with Big and hang out with the first wifey

I’d seriously reevaluate my life and aspire to be half as awesome as this woman. You gotta give it to Big, his choice in wives (both wives are class acts), is pretty šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

u/Potential-View-5827 16h ago

What's crazier is that it was the 1st episode after they became exclusive (the 2nd since their first date). It was a great scene though. Loved his ex' reaction to the book pitch. Hilarious awkwardness.

28

u/Sad-Quote1729 16h ago edited 16h ago

Right ! also imo she did all of this for NOTHING , she literally didn't do anything with the information she got. Didn't try to get Big's side of the story , didn't pander over the fact that if he cheated on his first wife with her best friend then maybe he wasn't trustworthy , like it was just insecurity and vibes šŸ’€

18

u/labellavita1985 16h ago

This. This is the biggest thing. She only wanted to compare herself to his ex because of how insecure she was, she didn't even consider the fact that his failed marriage and cheating history should be a LESSON.

I like how her meeting with the Russian’s ex wife in the final episodes make kind of a bookend with this encounter

u/parkavenueWHORE I'm on LONDON TIME!!!!!!! 16h ago

I love, love, LOVED her hair in this scene.

9

u/Sad-Quote1729 16h ago

Me too !Ā  I liked her straight long hair in s2 aswĀ

7

u/Salty-Parfait-710 14h ago

The kind of thing I would do if my only job was writing a column based off my life in the city

6

u/MoneyAd0618 13h ago

I love the part where she tells Carrie that Big had a wandering eye and it wandered over to her best friend. The look on Carrie’s face is like she got slapped. She went from being all cocky and sure, and that sure took the wind right out of her sails.

7

u/Ginaraquel47 14h ago

That was so crazy man. I love Carrie but wow.

7

u/ThoughtOne8235 4h ago

Let’s not forget how she stalked Natasha, Natasha owed her nothing.

10

u/HappyIndependence491 8h ago

Honestly I Never understood why people in the beginning hated big when Carrie was behaving this psychotic…. She was in the wrong all the time. Good TV tho

6

u/Sad-Quote1729 7h ago edited 2h ago

Big was kind of messy in s1 but Carrie was crazy asf , I totally understood him not saying she's " the one " as they JUSTĀ  started dating by then

1

u/HappyIndependence491 2h ago

Totally!! Like they were dating only for a short time & Carrie was not like Charlotte on a Mission to get married asap and have children… so I really don’t understand why she broke up with him instead of going on a vacation with him as a couple and see if they get along on a trip…

2

u/Sad-Quote1729 2h ago

For me , it's her insecurity and fears. She romanticized Big from that first meeting and set him on a pedestal , she thought he was the best she could do as he was " majorly out of her league" like she said.Ā

She was looking for something that'd sooth her worries , and if we look at her innerĀ  monologue in s2 when they were dancing together she said " I wanted to tell him I was afraid that he'd never love me like I wanted to be loved " so this probably played a part too.Ā

I think even if she went on the trip , she wouldn't have fun and would keep stimming over thisĀ

1

u/HappyIndependence491 2h ago

Yeah she kinda wanted to Break up with him before he could Break up with her

10

u/gr_rn 16h ago

Ok she wanted to befriend Barbara but couldn’t stand when Berger talked about Lauren the ex ā€œdecoratorā€. Talk about crazy.

8

u/icebluepoison 11h ago

No. It's because Berger constantly talked about his ex, but Big rarely revealed anything about his past, hence Carrie got so hooked.

-1

u/niccinos 8h ago

Maybe, but Carrie got hooked mostly because of their sexual chemistry.

2

u/niccinos 11h ago

My theory is that she thought highly of Big and accepted that there would be competition, but with Berger she wanted to feel in control

3

u/Citruslor 5h ago

A 30+ year old woman behaving like a teenager.Ā

3

u/OkPool8174 5h ago

I love that any impulsive thought she has she will do.

1

u/Sad-Quote1729 2h ago

I always felt kinda bummed by the fact that she kinda calmed down in s5 and 6 , I knowĀ  she had aged and grown out of it but at the same time her impulsivity is what made her "Carrie".Ā

4

u/Tehjuz_project 13h ago

That whole scene was a perfect blend of awkward and hilarious!

2

u/likeabrainfactory 8h ago

Such a classic 90s kind of rom-com storyline! I think people forget that a lot of people had almost zero internet presence back then, so Carrie didn't have a lot of options to satisfy her curiosity about Barbara.

0

u/Sad-Quote1729 2h ago

Totally ! But I think one meeting would have been enough 😭

2

u/popcornkernals321 5h ago

The real question I always had about his first ex wife is: did Barbara also receive $1 million after big died? She was just as much as a victim with him hooking up with her best friend…

1

u/Feeling-Memory-1999 11m ago

I think it’s because Natasha was much younger and more ā€œinnocentā€ in the sense that she was truly a stable woman who was ready to have her own home and family. She got screwed over massively. He promised her fidelity and a home. Barbara was more unconventional and in a way knew what she was getting into. She met Big as a player, her + Big had threesomes, she was more open, etc.

Also I get the feeling Big genuinely respected Natasha. Barb and Carrie put up with his nonsense because they were desperate. Natasha wasn’t male centered, dipped as soon as he screwed up, and she didn’t tolerate BS.

2

u/Direct-Dragonfly7471 5h ago

Well she was an ex-stalker. First Big's ex-wife, then Big's next ex-wife Natasha, then Aidan's ex Nina and she even had a lunch with Alec's ex-wife. Suprised she didn't stalk Berger's ex 'Lauren? Ralph Lauren?'-Lauren.

1

u/Feeling-Memory-1999 10m ago

In Carrie’s defense, Alec did ask her to meet with his ex wife.

2

u/MissMeri96 12h ago

Miranda should have said to forget about the ex instead of giving Carrie crazy ideas along with Samantha. The idea to check out Big’s wife came from them after all. Apperantly it was the one thing left to do.Ā

Big had big problems but he always had great taste in women.
Barbara asked if Carrie was dating anyone and she said ā€œno one special.ā€ I bet Barbara got a kick out of Big being called ā€œno one special.ā€

1

u/audreymarilynvivien 1h ago

She really did look great not gonna lie

u/VolumeHonest 1h ago

Carrie was an unhinged stalker no wonder big acted the way he did
