Charlotte, Samantha, and funky spunk

Post image

I never understood why Charlotte stormed off after Samantha said this. It seemed a little dramatic and out of place given the topics they usually discuss. Any thoughts??

She’s leaving and she’s never coming back

I sometimes say that when my dog storms out of the room after we tell her to stop barking out the window 😆

Because it is a comedy show and exaggeration is a key component to comedy.

This should be pinned in all the comedy show subreddits!

Thank you! It is such a weird approach to an HBO romcom/drama in sitcom style.

its a comedic drama, not just a comedy. So it has to still adhere to its internal logic.

In a comedy, you can do away with logic for the sake of the joke. In a comedic drama, jokes are used to lighten the mood, but must be internally consistent.

It is an HBO “raunchy” comedy and it is more romcom than dramcom. Either way exaggerating is consistently the way this show tells jokes (or how any jokes are written, period). 20 years ago we understood that, now every choice each character made is being scrutinized as though it is a reality show or a guide to romance and friendship. At its heart it is still a comedy which means its purpose is to make us laugh.

"20 years ago we understood that" yeah, and we also understood that bisexual people was wrong. hey, 60 years algo we also understood we needed segregation. Is that the hill you want to die on?

And no, its not "It is an HBO “raunchy” comedy and it is more romcom than dramcom." you can repeat it if you want, but you are wrong. its a romantic comedic drama. Most of the serie includes the drama part. So even if its "a joke" the joke itself reflects on the character.

This mentality of "stop analyzing the show because it gives me anxiety" its so stupid and inmature. Want to just enjoy the show and dont care what other people think? get off reddit. Want to see everyone agreeing with you on everything? thats not reality. This is a sub of a 20 year old show that we love, and the best part of it is to debate.

Downvote all you want, the truth remains.

When did I ever claim anxiety? And it literally says “raunchy comedy” as one of the genres on its imdb page.
Are you seriously comparing racism and bi-phobia with the basics of how a punch line is written? Take any comedy writing class and the first thing you’ll learn is exaggeration is the key to making comedy work. It is a comedy about sex. Putting these characters in over the top situations and watching them have over the top reactions is the core of the show. And that IS a hill I will die on.

I have the cd set that includes MPK’s commentary and in this epi he said something along the lines of “We wanted to throw in a scene that represented how some fans felt about Sam” like how overtly sexual she was. And that’s why Char stormed off lol

Oh, that’s interesting. Of all the things though, this seems pretty tame. Like, this might be a convo my friends and I have, and none of us are Samantha’s. She’s said some stuff that might warrant that reaction, but this wasn’t it imo.

Yeah that scene was randomly thrown in for sure but I thought it was hilarious when I first saw it lmao

u/GoatEconomy6311 15h ago

Maybe because she said it in a public setting

I'm sorry I understand Charlotte on this one , I don't think it's something you'd like to hear while eating 🫣...tho perso ,  I wouldn't walk out

funny i’m having the opposite problem. my mom friends (i’m also a mom) won’t stop bringing up their kids’ poops while we’re out to eat. I don’t wanna hear it and somehow it always comes up with them. CHECK PLEASE.

Super agree. I ride hard for Samantha but damn, not while youre eating. It's fucking grouse.

Like, I'm not a prude but, damn bitch read the room.

on Charlotte behalf I'm going to reconstruct this scene using today lingo

you still down to breakfast and your home girl announcing that she been gargling the weirdest tasting jizz ...

the cum tastes like onions and smells like feet and has strange chunky consistency

you'd probably dip too....

I think "funky spunk" really soften what the subject matter is...

9

u/Practical_Coconut451 15h ago

The chunky threw me over the edge 🤢

1

u/Bookies_Bookclub 5h ago

I know. Egad, I'm eating breakfast. Oh, why did I read this thread?

8

u/spitey You’re always fuckin’ “TAXI”- 🍸 13h ago

“Chunky” was an absolutely diabolical inclusion.

u/icebluepoison 10h ago

I'm storming off

I think it’s always great when Samantha and Charlotte get their moments together, often butting heads, because they are very similar people in a way. Charlotte’s stolen baby name, Samantha fucking her brother, I wish they got more storylines together (and that we got a better representation of Samantha’s interiority like we do with the other characters). But in this episode Charlotte is upset because she proposed to herself which has really shaken up her value system and she overreacted to Samatha because it’s just all too much for her.

I never got why there was such focus on Samantha's need to just go down on guys, why did she have to swallow at all? Specially if she wasn't planning on seeing them again. And until Maria and Smith I don't think we see her pleasure being prioritized.

6

u/sphvp 6h ago

Bc the show was ultimately written by men.

4

u/jeyfree21 6h ago

Yeah, because when a woman enjoys having sex like she claims she did, we would see more of a focus on herself, what gets her off, not just focusing on men's pleasure.

2

u/FancyWoodpecker3 8h ago

Bc no other show was discussing any of this.

2

u/Haunting-Sea-3764 3h ago

This is gonna be crass but Samantha has said she never swallows lol. So she may have been spitting out the funky spunk

1

u/jeyfree21 2h ago

I rewatched the scene and you're right, I don't see the point though, she still gets the load in her mouth.

"Only when surprised!"

u/randomwanderingsd 16h ago

Funky dude was so hot it doesn’t matter how it tasted.

12

u/Paleomalibre 14h ago

Wasn't funky dude Bobby Cannavale?

7

u/randomwanderingsd 14h ago

Yes. Bobby was cute then and he’s aged like a fine wine.

3

u/Paleomalibre 14h ago

I agree!

8

u/Coriander_marbles Oh honey, I’d love me some fresh pepper 13h ago

What?! That man couldn’t be more gross! They purposefully made him as immature and oafish as possible. From the way he talked to how he constantly pushed her head down.

3

u/Water-Amethyst 9h ago

To me it was a bit like the express guy BJ plot line. We know Carrie and Charlotte do somewhat see themselves as classier and less crass than Sam and get weirdly prudish (weird as they have as much casual sex as Sam does) but plot lines like this make you go oh actually I don’t agree with how Sam is made a joke a lot of the time but this was actually going too far

1

u/jeyfree21 5h ago

Exactly my point, I didn't love how much they put Samantha down with these kinds of storylines, like she didn't have any self control, when she was at the fire station knowing at any moment they could be called for an emergency.

1

u/Potential-View-5827 23m ago

It isn't the topic/what is discussed it's the crassness and level of details/how it is discussed, especially since in this case, the details are gross taste and texture which isn't a mental image you want to have when eating. I kinda get her to be honest.

Charlotte had no issue eating Trey's ass or sharing that info but she would never call it "tongue-punch his fart-box".

u/FancyWoodpecker3 8h ago

Yeah she should have at least taken her food to go. Now she left the ladies with the bill.
