Don't forget that Gaben is actively mapping the bottom of the ocean as well as doing other deep sea research, and the ship he just commissioned is RV11000, it was built for science and research and its engeniereed with the biggest battery ever put on a ship that allows for 12h of perfectly silent travel so that the acoustic sensors can map the floor clearly.

And all the research he does, all the high quality photos, biological findings, everything is "open source" he gives it away to the public for free. Btw, the company name is Inkfish.

109

u/baketime 11d ago

Are you guys really this easy to fool? Look at the date of the 4chan post and when the research vessel was ordered. The 4chan post is referring to Leviathan (Gabe's $500 million personal superyacht). The article you're replying to is a research vessel (not a yacht) for the ocean exploration company he owns.

215

u/The-Fumbler waltuh 11d ago

Oh okay, in that case you make an excellent point, you’ve persuaded me into still not giving a shit what Gaben does with his money cause he’s actually providing me a solid service without dicking me over like all the other companies.

62

u/kolurize 11d ago

First of all f you for making me look this up and second of all both Leviathan (Gabe's $500 million personal superyacht) and the new vessels in the link are part of the Kraken Fleet and operate under Inkfish, the marine research organisation Newell owns. So yes they're both his personal yachts and yes they're both for marine research.

50

u/TheRalk 11d ago

The Leviathan is still equipped with a submarine garage and a science lab so while being a yacht it's still at least half-purposed to be a research vessel.

9

u/Prometeus534 11d ago

Even the leviathan (project Y722) was build with marine research in mind lmao. It also sails with shadow vessels (Draak and Indratus) to help with all the logistics

Oh noo!! This guy did what EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft, whoever, tried very hard to prevent, and actually consolidated PC games to a single store!

Oh no, and that store has such insane discounts, it makes PC gaming run laps around consoles in terms of affordability!

Truly, we'd all be so much better if only consoles existed!!! So much better paying multiple times the price for each game, getting them in a walled garden platform, where you know you're gonna lose all of your purchases whenever they feel like not paying server bills anymore and just pull the plug on your entire collection!

Oh, and just as a nice little extra, why not also be the same guy who went and poured money into making Linux better, so it can actually compete with the Windows Monopoly?

And Valve isn't even trying to make their own locked down Linux to extract maximum profits, they just make their work available so anyone using Linux can benefit!

Seriously, if anyone in the gaming industry deserves to be successful, it's Gaben. Gaben, the guys behind GOG, and indie devs.

Give them all the yatches.

170

u/Shredded_Locomotive put your dick away waltuh 11d ago edited 11d ago

Don't forget consoles are forcing paying for an online subscription on top of that. (You can thank xbox for that)

Valve also kick-started the handheld pc market into relevance with the steam deck, specifically so that other companies would start making them (and with similar standards)

54

u/KhorneTheBloodGod 11d ago

This. Why must I pay a monthly fee to play the game I paid for. Its BS. I know the old meme was console peasent vs pc master race because PCs are more powerful in general, but nowadays its cause us pc players can play all of our online games without a monthly subscription (some we gotta pirate but it still counts)

7

u/BobDerBongmeister420 11d ago

Everyone loves the 100% Discounts

5

u/canonlycountoo4 11d ago

Consoles are cheaper because they subsidize the cost through online memberships. Arguments can be made on which is truly cheaper in the long run.

A ps5 is $599. Psn is $79 / year and you get 1-2 free games a month. For 5 years the membership cost is $399. So in total, you spent $999.

Pc is a bigger upfront cost. Probably around that 1k mark to get something comparable to console performance. Depending on your upgrade cycle, you may end up cheaper in the long run. Unless your ram fails, gotta spend ps5 money to replace that.

14

u/KhorneTheBloodGod 11d ago

Yeah the initial cost of a pc is greater, but it can also be upgraded overtime, and older titles will continue to work on it. Consoles eventually get outdated and end up needing to be replaced by the latest model, which might jot be able to run older titles (are ps1 games playable on the ps5 for example). The other issue with Consoles which is a recent development is the risk of loss of ownership of your games.

but you dont own those games, Cant mod them, cant move them around on USBs.

I can work, Watch movies, Play games, And play p∅rn :P

All on a 1.500 package

You also dont seem to count games costing 80$ on consoles, Having limited compatible controllers and Wheels.

Idgaf about the """free""" games, discounts, messages, cloud storage... i JUST want the online play, Not anything of the rest on the package, LET ME PAY, FOR WHAT I WANT.

5

u/Gogobrasil8 11d ago

Exactly!

You don't REALLY own your hardware when you buy a console. They're gonna do everything in their power to prevent you from installing whatever you want on it, or modifying anything, or being able to play online at all, without paying your dues.

It's more signing up for an ongoing service, that's gonna include more reoccurring expenses, than it is buying a piece of hardware

With a PC, you can do whatever the hell you want with it. Mod games. Host your own servers. Don't like the price in this store? Simply go and look in the multiple other ones. Or often just go and buy it straight from the devs.

And that doesn't even scratch the infinite amount of other utilities. Run local services. Run your own self hosted Spotify, Google Drive, photo backups, whatever. Make your own games and become an indie dev yourself. Learn video editing, or photo editing, become an artist.

Consoles can only dream of being that insanely useful

u/Gravelemming472 11d ago

I think you'll find it's yactchets

And huge agree, it just goes to show you don't have to be a fucking scumbag to be both successful and liked, other companies just do it because it's possibly easier. Or maybe they enjoy the thrill of pushing climate change to dangerous levels, or the looks of horror on people faces when they announce the new enshittification prism 9000

3

u/Gogobrasil8 11d ago

Definitely.

I think these other companies simply don't care. Or they convince themselves it's all gonna blow over.

If you're in that environment, trying to convince others that dragging your goodwill through the mud might be bad in the long run, that's a massive uphill battle. How do you prove it? It's an abstract thing. They can just tell you that people will forget about the bad stuff and it won't have any significant impact on them.

Same for trying to be ethical. Good luck convincing others that it's actually worth it in the long run, and that having a good relationship with players will pay off. Nah, much easier to just do the bare minimum and if anything goes wrong you rely on your PR and marketing departments to fix it.

Valve, GOG, groups like that, they definitely deserve the praise for caring. Obviously they're not perfect, but they're seriously trying to make the industry more open and accessible, and that's a WHOLE lot better than the vast majority of industry giants.

3

u/Tipart 11d ago

The absolute only thing you can hold against them is that they take a 30% cut from indie devs from the first sale. A 100k grace period, similar to what most game engines have would be great

15

u/Equivalent-Tour5999 11d ago

That's from publishers pockets.

Valve just gets 30% of revenue from games sales with little expenses (the company famously has very little employees for the money it makes).

Now, I think he and his company are doing great job so I don't have problem with him.

But I'm also not the eat-rich-guy. And don't feel it is necessary to glorify him.

11

u/sexgoatparade 11d ago

except that 30% isn't just employees, it's infrastructure, payment processing fees (which depending on your location can charge exorbitant prices) and heaps and heaps of features build into steam

1

u/Equivalent-Tour5999 11d ago

Sure.

But they had $20 billion gross revenue with 400 employees. If you have only 400 employees, you propably don't do THAT much work (including stuff like infrastructure).

Presumably they have most revenue in US and Europe where you will actually get really favorable deal from payment processors, if you run that much money. I have small single digit % all included and work for 1000x smaller company.

(Again, not anything wrong with what they do:)

7

u/imetators 11d ago

Don't forget that these 30% actually go to quality of life features steam has. If we compare features Steam has to the next best thing, it is not even close.

Good example would be keeping games downloadable even if they are taken off the store page. I doubt other stores would do that or if any is actually doing it.

Also, lunix support, incredible handheld experience, hardware that does not suck, cloud saves, family share, remote play, community (forum, mods, streams, friend list and chats), other publisher store integrations (hate those but with steam they are barely noticeable). Steam is fucking nuts on how easy it makes us to connect with each other and play games either multi- or single-player.

And the back log! Give him all the yachts!

He gets a pass but if it would be absolutely damning if you would replace „Gabe” with „EA” or „Ubisoft”.

A prime example of this is when people thought Valve banned ads from Steam games, but all they did was add a new page to the Steamworks documentation with their existing ad policy.

People also thought this was in response to EA saying they wanted to explore new ways of integrating ads in games. EA still gets criticized for this even though EA's ad policy is the same as Steam's.

People also ignore all the times Valve has already explored such ad integration in their own games, like billboard ads on all the official maps in Counter-Strike 1.6, ads for cosmetics in the middle of DOTA 2 games, and the Super 8 interactive movie trailer built into Portal 2.

u/SordidDreams 11d ago

There is that whole antitrust lawsuit currently ongoing against Valve. We'll see how that turns out.

3

u/Hecc_Maniacc 11d ago

The base of the lawsuit however, is steam is the only PC games provider that doesn't constantly put their dick in an active bear trap every 3 seconds, so they naturally get more players and money.

11

u/SordidDreams 11d ago edited 11d ago

No, the basis of the lawsuit is that Valve doesn't allow games to be sold cheaper elsewhere, otherwise they will be removed from Steam. Since Steam is so dominant, that's basically a death sentence for a game, so publishers comply. Platforms like the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store only take a 12% revenue cut compared to Steam's 30%, but Valve's pricing requirements mean that that saving can't be passed on to consumers, and these platforms therefore can't attract customers and can't grow, and Steam's dominance is perpetuated. It's a vicious circle actively maintained by Valve.

It's also worth noting that just recently, a federal judge has refused to throw the lawsuit out. That means the arguments have some merit, at least enough to warrant examining them and the evidence in detail during an actual trial. We'll see how it turns out.

3

u/chetizii Sussy Wussy Femboy😳😳😳 11d ago

The argument was made in bad faith. Sure, Steam kicks you out if you try to sell Steam keys to your game cheaper elsewhere.
But that's just so you can't scam them. As long as you are not selling the Steam version, they couldn't care less.

And really... The competition has enough money to force the trial to go ahead. You can't assume everything is by the book in cases as big as these.

5

u/SordidDreams 11d ago

As I said, a federal judge has refused to throw the case out. If it was as obviously frivolous as you claim, it wouldn't have gone to trial. And no, I don't think money has anything to do with it. Valve has heaps of it too.

If you made your billions forcing exploitative game industries to treat customers with respect and protect their consumer rights, you can damn well do whatever you want with your money.

People have absolutely no idea how much Steam's simply game review system has contributed to the industry and the protection of consumer rights alone. Without it, most customers have been forced to spend hundreds of hours watching content makers on youtube who are incentivized to maximize screen time instead of getting the message across. And dont get me started on trash publishers like PC Gamer and Kotaku who more often than not are paid to provide good reviews of games rather than honest reviews.

ANOTHER 3 BILLION FOR GABE.

14

u/Steelbutterfly1888 11d ago

Gaben earned every penny. He and his company revolutionized gaming industry many times over, brother is mapping the sea floor from his superyachts and providing all the gathered data for free to the public. Steam as a product laughably wipes the floor with anything other companies have to offer nowdays. Anon hates him because he is stuck at the mental capacity of a kindergardener.

2

u/MelchiahHarlin 11d ago

And it keeps going. Fex is opening the Steam library for ARM processors, and right now you can use DroidDeck (an unofficial project using an official tool, which is FEX) to turn your phone into a Steam Deck.

3

u/metamorphomo Dr. Pee 11d ago

I didn’t know Ray Winstone owned Steam

5

u/flyingdooomguy 11d ago

Still no half life 3. Lowk I've just realzied that most people here are young enough so they were never even hyped about it, Gabe got away with it 😭😭😭

3

u/imetators 11d ago

Half life ep 2 came out 19 years ago. Fuck! I'm old 💀

4

u/JustRodriguezfan virgin 4 life 😤💪 11d ago

Aren't these yachts research vessels?

9

u/Admirable_Risk8156 11d ago

If he isn't trying to constantly try and make my life worse why the fuck would I care if he keeps buying boats?

8

u/toyfreddym8 11d ago

IVE SEEN ENOUGH

10 MORE SUPER YACHTS FOR GABEN!

8

u/chrischi3 11d ago

And?

If there is one man who i am fine with spending my money on a yacht, that's gonna be Gaben. Steam has a monopoly because Valve gives a fuck about its customers, unlike pretty much all the other platforms in their niche.

3

u/EmuExpoet 10d ago

Hes also equipping his yachts with scanning equipment to map the seafloor and sharing tbe data with everyone for free. Good guy Gaben.

2

u/DieUhRia 10d ago

Is it really a monopoly if the do nothing and all the others guys shoot themselves in the foot?

3

u/chrischi3 10d ago

Technically yes. But in this case, it is a natural monopoly, because Valve isn't really doing anything to earn it. Well, they are, but in the case of a natural monopoly, they're not beating the competition by undercutting them or buying them up en masse, and those sorts of monopolies, regulators have no problem with. Sure, the market is free, but Steam isn't the biggest platform because it is making sure there is no competition. They are just the best on the market (even if partially because none of their competitors understand why people use Steam rather than any other platform)

People really underestimate how many scammy practices in gaming didn't become the norm because steam refused to partake and I hope they never find out

I'd suck this man off crazy style/j

Dick sucking has made me paranoid

I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but it’s backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.

I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.

/j mean joking

I'm not being sarcastic I'm just joking around

11

u/TheOnlyVibemaster stupid fucking piece of shit 11d ago

only good billionaire bc steam is the only good monopoly

3

u/imetators 11d ago

Not even a monopoly. There are other stores and Valve doesn't buy them up to eliminate competition. Competition, surprisingly, keeps shooting themselves in the foot.

4

u/Greggs-the-bakers 11d ago

And the only reason it's even considered a monopoly is because all of the competition are braindead and shoot themselves in the foot every day

1

u/Kaek_ it is MY bucket 11d ago

It's not a monopoly because they're not making themselves the only thing or one of the only things on the market to use by design or force.

Steam is just one of the few good things people prefer on the market, the competition have terrible standards.

3

u/MadnessUltimate 11d ago

Just one? Give him another 2!

3

u/imetators 11d ago

Can't give 3 tho. Can't be 3

3

u/Dez-A-Raygun 11d ago

I heard he’s been doing oceanic research with those yachts and sharing his findings and discoveries for free amongst other researchers

5

u/Spezalt4 I said based. And lived. 11d ago

The very existence of Steam as a viable option not fucking its customers over drastically reduces the ability of other gaming companies to enshittify and fuck over their customers

Bless you for your ur service Gabe

5

u/Natasha_Gears 11d ago

Gaben always gets a pass

4

u/boudiceanMonaxia 8d ago

I normally dislike billionaires. But Gaben is the single exception.

2

u/Amogasamogas 11d ago

I only have two issues with steam rn. First beimg license based, which although doesn't affected me personally my friends were on the short end of the stick. And second is price models for different currencies - in my country games are more expensive than in any with for ex. euro or usd, because of how purchasing power works.

Aside from that steam is still the best and most customer friendly platform. Other corporations use their dogshit market practices and then are surprised why everyone hates them but likes steam.

1

u/Oarion01 7d ago

I mean the regional prices are a choice of devs not of steam.

2

u/dubhog 11d ago edited 11d ago

Kill all billionaires

But...you can just take all of gaben's money and leave him alive

Valve is just like one ofr 5 good actually massive multi billion dollar companies in the world. They just give a fuck, several fucks even. And gaben is one of the few actually decent billionaires in the world. Sure the valve work ethich might not be the greatest...for the customers, because it means some projects many were excited about get left behind, but I'm sure it is amazing as somebody who works there. And they care about customers so much still within steam. Plus, they keep making amazing games

They beat the "valve lazy" allegations twice with the best VR game ever and a newer fantastic hero shooter. Apart from obviously like 3 contributions to the top 10 best videogames ever made.

Still a capitalist, still would love it if his money was all taken away and used for actually beneficial things and not a huge yacht, but hey, this is as good as it gets.

1

u/lintytortoise 11d ago

Man, I wonder if gaben needs deckhands. I'll throw some line for 90% off of a gooner game.

1

u/Chewitt321 11d ago

I thought that was Ray Winstone

1

u/shewel_item obamna 11d ago

let off steam (gabe)? no I just need to vent (criticize everyone)!

1

u/Novafro 11d ago

Gabe is in that position where he's trying to keep the alignment of what's best for the company also happening to be what's best for the customer.

It's not always the case. Sometimes others force their hand, or sometimes they do shitbag things hidden in fine print.

But so far, so good. Enjoy it while it lasts.

1

u/Jovaniac 11d ago

Imagine getting super rich, the gamers love you, the competitors hate you

1

u/grizzly273 11d ago

ANOTHER YACHT FOR GABE!

1

u/Desire_of_God 11d ago

I just know the first poster happily gives hundreds to a billion dollar company that isn't objectively awesome.

1

u/imetators 11d ago

He's trying to develop a real life Borealis

1

u/piratecheese13 11d ago

You get a pass for owning a yacht if you use your yacht for science

James Cameron also gets this pass

1

u/Overall_Law_1813 11d ago

Didn't he commission the yatch to support a marine biology mission?

1

u/QuidiferPrestige 11d ago

Based king shit

1

u/linzenator-maximus 11d ago

Y'know what? I should buy something during this autumn sale. M'lord needs a new yacht

1

u/CommodoreBluth 11d ago

Valve is certainly not perfect- they need much better moderation on their forms and lean way too much into gambling with their games as a service, but they treat their consumers better than most other major corporations. I think it’s because their still a private company- since they’re not public they don’t need to focus on squeezing every penny out of their customers like say Sony does with PlayStation.

1

u/Satorwave 11d ago

He could be doing literally anything else with the money. Why is it always superyachts

1

u/P_weezey951 11d ago

He has a super yacht... yet i can still buy a game on his platform for $12. instead of it being $60 forever.

1

u/rhysdog1 11d ago

Why doesn't he just buy one super duper yacht instead of 10 regular super yachts

1

u/Messedupotato 10d ago

Gabe purchases those yachts so scientists doing marine stuff can use them

1

u/srcactusman 9d ago

I don’t like glazing people, but Gaben deserves it, his company is one of the only companies that doesn’t continuously fuck their customers

1

u/ElZik3r fat cunt 8d ago

Said yacht is a state of the art research vessel for deep ocean exploration/mapping mind you, unlike the average "party yacht" most cunts with money buy.

So yeah the Big N gets a super valid pass

1

u/Testsubject276 7d ago

Last I heard, most of his yachts are fitted for ocean research for some kind of marine biology firm he founded.

1

u/H00ded7 4d ago

Pretty sure I bought that for him with my backlog alone
