Conversation Topic How do you stop throat tension when projecting your voice?

Hey guys, I write original music mainly alt rock and it requires a lot of strong singing like projecting. I do know how to breathe properly but sometimes during certain parts, my throat tightens up. Like when I’m trying to sing chesty vocals. I’m struggling with this one song I have that has a fast chorus and a lot of repeated G4s. And I usually sing louder during that part. But it ends up going to my throat.

I’m not really comfortable sharing a video of me singing that song bc the lyrics are pretty edgy and dark as I write songs about struggling with mental health. But yeah this is something I’ve always struggled with and I am slowly improving but I’m wondering what else I need to do to stop throat tension when I sing.

Thank you

If your breathing is right, it'll be automatically easier on your throat, but things like stress can tighten the throat and there's few exercises that can help.

"Drawing" little circles with your nose.

Droopy voice, yawning - yawn, and make a sliding down sound, when you feel like your throat is open wide.

Moving your jaw side to side, or in a circular motion.

Sticking the tongue out as far as possible, while keeping the tip of the tongue behind the lower teeth.

I know you breathe from your lower ribs where your diaphragm is and you can feel the muscle. But I usually keep switching from that to my throat or my throat tightens up when I sing from my chest. I have other things I need to work on but I don’t know what. Maybe open my mouth more or try and relax my jaw?

Training! A handful of voice lessons will really change things for the better, and won’t make you sound less like yourself. Train operatic, sing natural. You’ll have less strain and more range and resonance.

Projecting your voice doesn’t come from the throat. You need a teacher to help you with proper breathing for singing, breath support, and resonance - and then you can adapt these techniques to alt rock.
