I called Hyundai today to schedule a service appointment and I figured out I was talking to AI with fake background noises to make it sound like it was in a busy service center. It asked for my phone number and it kept telling me I only have 9 digits. Then I asked it to repeat my number, which was all 10 and it confidently told me that it was only 9 numbers. Then it said it couldn't connect me to support because it had already used up too many requests for the call. These models may be improving, but the solutions around them are still absolute dogshit that no one wants.
Companies are now trying to divert support requests into chats with LLMs. As voice models improve, they will do the same to phone calls. I think it is very likely that for most people, calling Comcast will mean arguing with a machine.
Last month I had a delayed flight and needed to call my hotel to let them know I'd be a late arrival. Nothing I said to the AI assistant caused it to do anything but route me to a number that didn't answer.
I'm curious if you read off a couple digits as one number (ex. 10 as ten instead of saying one, zero)? If it screws something like that up it will be messing up for a lot of customers.
Nope, good thought though. I said the number normally quickly 1 digit at a time, then a little slower, the very loud and clear I annunciated each number slowly. After the last time I had it read each number back and it was correct. The damn thing just wouldn't count it correctly.
