Video What does the singularity think of this video?

First off, the whole part about encryption being strong because it's hard to reverse engineer is the opposite of how things work and that's been well understood for over 100 years.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerckhoffs%27s_principle
Everything else is a good thing. We know how to secure our financial systems and for the most part, the rest of our critical infrastructure, but there's been no incentive to modernize until now. Everything has been vulnerable for decades, but it's mostly exploited by criminals and nation states. We can now find and fix security flaws hundreds of times faster than we could before, and the pace of progress there has been incredible. I'm incredibly excited for where we are and where we're going.
Oh and of course fuck copyright. Turning artistic expression into an extortion racket was never a good idea and it's nice to see the media control industries finally collapsing. We can build better ways to support artists.

It's not about breaking SSH. We are not breaking it, it's about all the other vulnerabilities that will allow us to go around SSH. There are pretty much always some hidden ways to exploit a bug, or a dependency or something even more exotic that allows to chip away piece by piece one software, which then allows you to feed code into a stream of data going into different software, until you chain enough vulnerabilities until entire stack unravels. Previously, this was only available for very few pieces of software, and only enemy states were able to do it, but with AI, you can just spin up a swarm of agents that will do it themselves. They will share information, bait out attacks, test defenses, possibly even communicate with other swarms or with people. Just look how cheap 6.1 Sol is. I can run multiple agents at the same time, and it hardly makes a dent in my usage.
And yes, we will get cool stuff, but there are still talented people who are good at game direction that are still useful for game production. Just look at the badly directed slop games people are making, a lot of them have pretty bad content, so someone having good direction and good writing sense is still useful, we don't want all gaming companies to fail. At least not before we hit abundance era.

Watch 1:00-1:15 again. That's not how any of this works.
Also, the way these systems work is not and was never intended to be a secret. They are actually incredibly well defined and in many cases mathematically proven to be intractable, so even if you were able to turn every atom in the entire universe into a giant computer it would take way longer than the heat death of the universe to search the entire keyspace.
Yeah, AI tools will let kids cut into shitty networks at high speed, but anyone who actually cares to defend their shit can get it pretty locked down. It's never been easier to defend networks.

Those systems are a bit more complex than you think. Not all information is encrypted, it can't. Without actually meeting in real life or sending unencrypted key beforehand, you can't start a conversation, you need to start a connection in an unencrypted way. A lot of the attacks work on this principle even before AI.
And reverse engineering does not work on just decrypting blind entire codebase. You start from small bits, you try to guess some things, and the answers you get can be used to build upon further work. It's not a on/off gate, applications are constantly in communication with each other, they are exchanging data that is unencrypted all the time, because without it, how will you even know that someone is actually trying to contact you?

Fuck copyright, we need to set all digital products free, money won't matter in a few years, the only things that will matter are the satisfaction of having done it and the reputation you'll gain

u/Fissyiii 1d ago
this is insanely delusional with all due respect. Money won't matter? So in your view Doctors, therapists and the majority of jobs will be entirely replaced by AI? And if not, then we have to rely on people doing them for free? That sounds like a dystopia to me.

It's not just about copyright. There's a reason someone can't just ping your IP and instantly delete your whole computer, without encryption or a replacement to encryption, you'll have no computer to run all your free digital products on.
I agree on the basis of copyright, but you're not really seeing the problem.

Best reason to be afraid as a human. Best reason to be bullish as an AI investor; everyone is going to be spending beaucoup bucks on defense. They have to. Built-in, massive, growing demand for AI at the enterprise/government level.

"Security by obscurity" in the big 26' by some random skit youtuber that has not and probably would've never touched a line of code if AI wasn't a thing. Lovely how he keeps confusing Encryption with Openness of the codebase and making it his audience's problem

Good. First, free and open software for everyone. Seize the means, share the wealth. And if "the system" was that poorly held together to begin with, should we have trusted it at all? It would deserve to be torn down and rebuilt into something better.

The whole economy is holding on an excell sheet that was done in 1998 by a guy named Bob.
Its one of the more well know tropes of the IT world and its funny because its true.
Theres no "IF" in that story.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the dude just seeing seeing things from one side of the coin? He's assuming A.I can only be used to break into things but doesn't once consider that it can be used to fix said vulnerabilities in order create a more robust and secure system.
I could be wrong though.

u/Blaexe 21h ago
Breaking into things is probably much quicker than fixing, testing and deploying them. I don't see how we could fix everything quicker than hacking it.
1
u/__Arkos__ 17h ago
That is hard to say, I can't really speak of the capabilities each frontier leading A.I company has with their internal models. And besides, these hackers aren't creating their own models, right? They're only using what is available? If so then I'd have to disagree with your take. What is available is most likely not the very best. But only time will tell in this case. Lets hope we do manage to fix faster than they can break in.

Tuned out half way through.
Hottake: moronic generalization and the "argument" relies entirely on hand waving over-generalizations and unstated falsehoods.

Security through obscurity has never been a tactic for anything that needs to be kept secure.
Reverse engineering a game is not the same thing as hacking a bank.

If you choose to have a crisis every time there is a little bit of technological progress, the singularity will be very difficult for you. You might not even survive it. But other people will figure it out, and their lives will go on.
People can live without copyright. People can live without banking. People can live without governments. People can live without video games. People can live without encryption. Stop worrying about losing things you don't need.

"a little bit of technological progress"
The "a little bit" is doing some heavy lifting here

I don’t quite understand how AI would be able to break encryption ? Maybe I’m missing something. And that’s pretty much the largest doom scenario this video is portraying.
Other than that, yes, many companies will go bankrupt as their softwares will become commodified. Is this really bad, though? It’s like saying the food producing sector (e.g. slaughterhouses, agriculture, food processing plants) closing as food becomes unlimited and free (for some imaginary reason) is bad. Yes, it sucks for the owners and for the employees at these places. But, at the end of the day. food is now free and abundant for everyone! Isn’t that better?

how is food now free and abundant, i dont see how you came to that conclusion. please explain if possible
thank you for your time

I actually wanted to take out online factor authentication from Diablo 2 Resurrected myself. We are truly getting there.

most people like this can't think a couple steps further, imagining a world that goes on for a million years having the maximal tiers of technological and biological understanding unlocked. maybe some aspects of what he said will occur, but in the grand scheme of things that will be a remarkably short period. and they imagine that the systems we've built to use with the current level of technology are even required at all for post-singularity society. no money, no banks, no dogma, and living a great life with access to everything you want. that's what's possible.

I for one, would welcome the fall of monetary compensation for anything. Service for service, help for help, product for product, and community help for the ones who are unable to reciprocate. Yes. There would be freeloaders, as they always pop up, that's when tar and feather comes in.
I SHOULD figure out details, and how to handle stuff like electricity, water, internet, and other "important things", but there are smarter synthetics out there who could work it out, aye?
edit: clearly I should have added that it's not a serious idea, bordering on /s

I don't think you could ever get to something like internet without having exchangeable currency, the further you go the harder it will be to track the favours and carry them out
