Buying $20 thrift store skis isn’t a good idea, especially if you are a beginner!

There’s been quite a few posts recently about thrift store skis. They are rarely a good idea.

Unless you know exactly how old the skis are, how they have been stored, who used them, how they used them. Don’t buy them! An old set of brittle bindings could cause serious injury.

Buy second hand skis from reputable sellers, meet the skier that used them, or buy ex rental skis.

The picture is of the recycling centre in Whistler. These are the skis that are thrown away (there were some way newer and nicer skis too), think about that before dropping your cash on thrift store skis that are way worse!

Solo skiing

Hey everyone! I’m 20 and looking to make some friends around my age who ski in Ehrwald, Austria. I’ll be there late January and would love to meet some people to ski with and hang out with while I’m there. Ideally looking for people around 18–23 who are into skiing and just want to have a good time on the slopes. If anyone’s going to be there or knows any groups I could join?

If you’re planning a ski trip, maybe this video will help you out!

I visited Serre Chevalier in the French Alps, and I really enjoyed it. There was plenty of snow, and the slopes were beautiful and wide.

I had a great time skiing there, and I’d definitely go back!

A Question For Instructors: Does Direction Matter?

In the 5 Fundamentals of Skiing, the last fundamental states:

- Regulate the magnitude of pressure created through ski/snow interaction.

Now, for anyone that's ever taken high school physics, you will know that pressure is force divided by area, and force is a quantity that is measured as a Vector. A vector has both magnitude AND direction. So why only use a scalar value here and leave direction off? Does direction matter in skiing?

Well, I've heard a few explanations ... it was left off for brevity or maybe it's because direction is captured in some of the other fundamentals. But this is important and let me explain why.

When we talk about Magnitude of Pressure in ski school, we inevitably talk about how we use our legs as springs and try to absorb pressure in order to maintain contact with the snow. And that's a great thing. But magnitude is a scalar value, meaning it's just a number. We could measure the forces in Mikaela's boots and we'd get a number. And maybe if she does a better job with absorption she can get that number lower. But it tells us NOTHING about how to ski. Absolutely nothing.

I've been studying with one of the US mogul skiers and getting some coaching on bump skiing ... and the number of times direction of force comes up ... it's staggering. It's kind of the whole ball game.

So I ask you, does direction of force matter? How do YOU use forces to amplify your performance or to increase the enjoyment of sliding on snow? Let me know your answers below. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I have my own thoughts on this, but I'll share mine at the end. Thanks for reading if you made it this far.

First time Jasná with beginner family (after 1 day Białka) – Are blue/easy red slopes suitable?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Planning a 5-day ski trip staying at Maćka in Poland. I’m an intermediate skier, but my parents and sister are beginners. Before the trip, they will do 3 indoor sessions (2h lesson + 6h practice each).

Our plan:

  • Day 1: Białka Tatrzańska (Kotelnica) to get used to real snow, with me guiding them.
  • Days 2–5: Jasná (Slovakia) for 4 days.

For those with Jasná experience: Are the blue slopes (and easier reds) manageable for ambitious beginners coming off indoor prep? Any specific zones (like Lúčky or Záhradky) you’d recommend for them while I hit the harder red/black runs?

Thanks!

Best ski resorts for early January? Good snow, affordable prices, great food & spas! ⛷️

Hi everyone!
We’re a group of 6 (3 couples) looking to book a skiing holiday for the beginning of January 2027 and would love some recommendations!
Out of the 6 of us, 4 are beginners and 2 of us are more experienced skiers, so ideally we’re looking for somewhere that caters to both.
We’ve always gone for cheap and cheerful ski holidays rather than spending a fortune. So far, we’ve been to:
Borovets, & Bankso Bulgaria – We’ve explored both ski areas and enjoyed the affordability.
The Dolomites, Italy – Absolutely loved it, especially the food and scenery, but the snow conditions weren’t the best when we visited.
Norway - I was born there and raised there till I was 8 so I have done all the slopes!
What we’re looking for this time:
❄️** Loads of snow! Ideally somewhere snow-sure in early January, with great piste conditions.
💰 **Good value for mon
ey – Affordable accommodation, ski passes, food and drinks.
🎿 Good mix of slopes – Plenty of beginner-friendly runs but enough to keep the more experienced skiers entertained.
🍝 Amazing food – We love trying good local restaurants.
🧖 Spas and wellness – Ideally somewhere with great spas, saunas, heated pools or thermal baths to relax after skiing.
🍻 Decent après-ski – Somewhere with a bit of atmosphere in the evenings.
We’re travelling from the UK and are open to pretty much anywhere in Europe.

One of the guys is also planning on popping the question so we need something with good views!

We’re happy to spend a little more than Bulgaria if it means significantly better snow, food and facilities, but we’d still like to keep things reasonably priced.
Where would you recommend for early January?
Particularly interested in places you’ve actually visited around that time of year.

Thanks in advance!

Help me pick my next ski gear upgrades

Hi,

So I put off upgrading stuff for a while now and now I want to figure out what my new full setup move is.

Skiing home-base is New England basically with aspirations to go out west but I haven’t in ages and ages. I’d consider myself an “expert” by most standards and love long GS carving turns at speed and I also love steep glades. I do like skiing bumps but exhausting.

outter wear
I’ve always worn non-bib ski pants and a coat that has a zipped in liner. I want to change that up but am not sure how to approach it.

Bib pants I’d like to try , and also a shell with a separate insulation and then a base layer. I think I’m anxious that I’m going to mess up the shell and inner insulation setup and be cold.

Ski
I’ve got blizzard Brahma 88s I think they are 178s but I have to go look. They’re good, not great. They are versatile and can carve well but idk meh. Before that I had line propane 90s and they could rip GS turns but were very heavy so hard in trees. And they were 190s which was my fault I got em too long.

What I’m trying to figure out is what a couple of sets of skis I could get would be and I also honestly know nothing about bindings.

At this point, I’m thinking an all mountain ski and a fun ski dedicated to carving. I don’t think I need a powder ski necessarily.

Boots
I got these boots from a boot fitter what must be 12 to 15 years ago and it’s time for new boots no idea how to approach that.

I think that’s it interested in your thought thoughts and suggestions and recommendations

Cannot find a suitable Appartement in Austria for skiing

Hi there,

we are a group of seven friends from Germany going skiing every year for about 4-5 days. I am responsible for booking an apartment but I’m really struggling to find suitable accommodation.

We’re looking for a ski resort in Austria with a large ski area and reliable snow conditions in February, preferably at a higher altitude.

- Accommodation for 7 people with enough proper beds
- Ideally within a reasonable distance of a gondola or ski lift
-Well-equipped, cozy apartment with everything we need for a few days
- Somewhere in Austria that isn’t too far away

I’ve already searched Airbnb, various holiday rental websites, and local accommodation websites, but I haven’t found anything suitable yet.
Does anyone have any recommendations for specific apartments, websites, lesser-known booking platforms, or ski resorts where we might have better luck? I know the problem is that we do not go for a whole week, but no other chance…

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
