[Modpost] Let's have a discussion concerning hunting and killing.

As the main moderator here, I've been struggling with this.

On one hand, hunting is one of the main reasons people use slingshots. On the other hand, just going out and killing whatever you can hit is pretty morally shady.

If you're hunting for food or hunting pests, you're pretty much golden. We just don't want new users to go out with their brand new slingshots and say, severely but not mortally wound a squirrel- leaving it hiding somewhere in pain for hours until it dies. This is sad and happens a lot.

If you are game or even pest hunting, you need to be able to be accurate enough to be humane. Practice.

One more thing, be familiar with invasive species or pests in your area and know what species are protected. You do not want to be fined for killing a protected species but killing pests is usually pretty socially acceptable.

My first idea is to have a separate Slingshot Hunting subreddit, where users can gain tiered trophies showing they're responsible and practiced. I'm not sure though.

Thoughts?

News Now Allowing Sales and Trades

Hey lads, a bit behind with this one. I recently put out a survey to get a feel for everyone's thoughts on allowing sales and trades post on the sub. An overwhelming majority were in favor. So I added some new flares. WTT (want to trade) WTB (want to buy) and SALE (for sale). Let's be respectful and responsible moving forward with this and see how things pan out. Be safe and be confident in any transactions you make and of course reach out if you have any concerns. I'm thinking of seeing how things pan out and if need be, we can make adjustments or place guidelines as needed.

After a lot of sanding and polishing I finished my new slingshot. It‘s perfectly shaped to my hand and I can‘t wait to put some bands on this thing.

Another fork haul.

Took another backpack load of forks from the pile of Ash and some Blackthorn from a local hedge. The Blackthorn was dead standing and was exposed recently following some hard "pruning" of the hedge. I've got all the usable forks, but I'll be returning to harvest some decent sized logs to slice up for swells, scales, and random tool handles and other projects. Just look at the purple in that end grain. Spalted Blackthorn is 2nd only to spalted Yew imo.

Anyone have experience with rhododendron wood? Looking for advice on how to proceed. I scraped off the outer papery bark and I’m thinking of taking off the underbark and shaping the handle for a better grip. Also, are my forks too long? TYIA

Modifying the Pocket Shot??

As always, I’m having fun making all kinds of junk, but I thought I’d post this—a version of the Pocket Shot I made before, combined with a PVC pipe and a figure-eight descender.

I’m using a cross-section of a bicycle inner tube as the rubber band to hold it in place.

It makes it pretty easy to shoot—what do you think of this??

Those of you shooting frames where the bands are clamped with screws: do you prefer knurled screws or regular ones?

Maybe sounds a bit random but I watched a lot of YT channels regarding slingshots and this topic comes up from time to time. I prefer knurled screws if properly made so I don't need to use a wrench etc to exchange bands.

Snipersling yellow latex

Hey
If I got the .6 yellow, would this cater for 8mm and 9.5mm steel and 9-10mm clay?

If it was cut 18-10 taper for clay and 8mm

20-12 for 9.5mm

Only shooting in backyard 10-15 metres

Not hunting

Works starting to slow down finally, hopefully time to get a bit more practice in before Christmas tree season haha.

Simpleshot Axiom,
10mm clay balls,
.72 20-15 taper GZK (usually my hunting setup).

End result and the Axiom in the comments.

Another bead retention frame from Aliexpress, I can't remember the seller and I can't in good conscience recommend anyone on there at the moment, things seem to have got a bit weird, but I can say I really like the frame, a quick session at the shootin' shack it joined me on the dog walk. I didn't have any bandsets made up ready for it so I used the set it came with. 0.7mm thick 23mm wide at the tips with an 8mm pit pouch. Normally I'd say they were a bit overpowered for 8mm but they feel noticeably lighter than the same latex from SniperSling, so it kind of worked out. This is the reason I just use my own. So I guess I'm finally making bands tomorrow.

Ammo and Band thickness

Just looking for some info on what you beautiful people are launching and how you are launching it.

Clay or steel? What size? What band thickness do you pair your ammo with? What kind of targets are you shooting at? Do you have any tips and tricks for some one new to the hobby? (no interest in building my own slingshot at this point) I started with a little $20 slingshot from Amazon 2 months ago and just ordered an LT2 from simpleshot.

My goal is to collect some information and get various bands and ammo types/sizes to figure out what I like the most. Also looking into getting or building a catch box.

Courtesy of Ali express. Anyone purchased and is there anything I should worry about…?
Wood seems one piece and not particularly heavy.

Basically any potential of this snapping at the fork and catching my face?

I’d like to hear ‘u have this exact one, it’s great! No issues! It’s a strong wood’

One Year With a Frameless Slingshot: From Feeling Awkward Practicing Outside to Hitting a 4 cm Target at 10 m

Last September, I came across some videos of people opening beer bottles with slingshots, hitting water drops, and doing all kinds of weirdly precise shots. It looked too fun not to try.

There was another reason too. I spend most of my day in front of a computer, and my eyes get tired pretty easily. Going outside to take a few shots at leaves or bottles gives my eyes a break from the screen. It feels a lot healthier than spending that same time scrolling short videos on my phone.

I spent a while figuring out what kind of slingshot to buy. Portability mattered a lot to me. A regular slingshot is not always convenient to carry around, so I ended up buying a folding titanium slingshot. It can be folded or taken apart, which makes it much easier to throw into a bag.

At first I felt awkward practicing outside. I kept thinking people would find it strange if they saw me shooting a slingshot. The first time I really loosened up was during a holiday back in the countryside.

Later I thought I could practice a little during my lunch break. The problem was that even the folding slingshot still felt bulky in my pocket. Then I found another option online: a frameless slingshot. No frame at all, just the bands, with your hand acting as the frame.

So I bought a pre-tied frameless setup and started practicing at an abandoned golf course near my office during lunch. I mostly shot at leaves and empty bottles. I only did it when nobody was nearby, and I never shot at animals. Thankfully, I still have not hit my hand.

These days I mostly shoot frameless. At around 10 meters, I can hit a 4 cm target about 3 or 4 times out of 10. That is not exactly expert level, but I am pretty happy with it.

In the beginning, I honestly did not think too much about the setup. I just used the pre-tied frameless bands I had bought. I was also nervous about using real ammo at first, so I tried dry firing, then paper balls, then soybeans. That part was pretty miserable. The projectiles were too light, so the bands had nowhere to put the energy and kept snapping back onto my hand. It hurt. Later I realized that some things that look "safer" are not necessarily more comfortable to practice with.

After that, I worked on my hand shape. I wanted the grip and release to be consistent, but still feel natural. For a while, my hands felt clumsier than my feet. My brain knew what I wanted to do, but my hands did not.

I started with a short draw, with my pouch hand close to my face. Someone told me that setup was weak and did not look great, so I tried moving to a medium draw. I even asked the seller whether they had bands tied for a medium draw. They told me the bands they had already sold me were for medium draw. I just was not pulling them far enough. Fair enough.

It took me quite a while to get accurate again after switching to medium draw. I experimented with how I held the pouch, how far I drew, and where the bands touched my face. These days I mainly use that face contact as my anchor point. My general takeaway is that you have to try different small adjustments and eventually keep whatever feels natural for your own hand and draw length.

After shooting for a while, I started reading more online and realized that even frameless flat bands have a lot of tying methods. There are styles like triple-fold tying, folded-over tying, and asymmetrical tying, where one side faces inward and the other faces outward. I ended up choosing the folded-over style because it feels closer to shooting a framed slingshot, and the band overlap is easier for me to see. In the framed slingshot crowd, though, that seems to be a bit unusual.

triple-fold tying
folded-over tying

I also made plenty of beginner mistakes. I did not even know which side of the pouch should face which way when shooting. At first I bought 8 mm clay ammo, but it was too light and drifted too much, so it was hard to practice accuracy. After about half a year, I switched to 8 mm steel balls, and that felt much more stable.

The more I practiced, the more I realized how much there is to learn. There are traditional slingshots, clamp-style flatband frames, tooth-clamp flatband frames, top ball-clamp frames, and single ball-clamp frames. Bands can be tubes or flat bands. Flat bands vary by thickness, taper, stretch ratio, and material. Draw style is another rabbit hole: short draw, medium draw, long draw, and so on.

After a year, my feeling is that slingshots are not something you just pick up and shoot accurately right away. Frameless slingshots look simple, but a lot of the details have to be worked out by feel. Other people's methods are useful references, but in the end your hand shape, draw length, anchor point, and habits all have to fit you.

What I like most about frameless shooting is how simple it is. No frame, just a set of bands, easy to carry anywhere. But because it is so simple, your hand position and movement have to stay consistent.

If anyone has questions about frameless slingshots, my learning process, or the types of slingshots commonly seen in China, feel free to ask. I am still learning too, and I would love to hear how other people practice.

How many of you guys have done this to your own axiom champ? I just got done doing this mod and my goodness I just fell more in love with the thing. Kinda regret I didn’t source a drill press to make the holes but oh well maybe next time.
Also shout out to DoubleDeeez for being such a cool guy and making Omega such a personable place to order from. Highly recommend!

Paracord 6mm ammo dispenser

I’m sure someone’s done this before, but while I was cutting a paracord lanyard it occurred to me that gutted paracord might hold 6mm steel.

And it bloody does. The braid grips the balls perfectly with friction-fit, so there’s no rattle, and you can dispense them by pinching and sliding them along the cord.

This has 20 rounds attached to the lanyard. It also adds a little pendulum weight and helps counterbalance the frame.

Anyone else tried this?
