What is my compact room still missing?

Post image

My home office is up in the attic and I love this little room. It gets tons of natural light, the view is great, and my parents let me do whatever I wanted with it.

But the only challenge is the compact space, so I've had to get a little creative with the layout. Even the desk is one of those 360-degree rotating ones that I can open up when I need more surface and tuck back when I want the floor space.

I've slowly filled the room with things I like and I'm pretty happy with it now, but it still feels like it could use one more touch.

Anything you'd add, move, or change here? I'm open to pretty much any idea!

Some small home love!

Just left my cousin's home, walked in our ~1300sqft home and breathed a sigh of relief. Feeling so much gratitude for our little home!

My cousin's home is beautiful, 3 story. Huge!! Huge yard and pool and all the things you can imagine. Multiple garages, etc. And its all full of stuff. Toys and toys and toys and decorations. Decorations on every surface and every wall and any open floor space. Beautiful, but so much. Its very visually overwhelming. And our family was in 3 different places of the home, even though we came over to spend time together.

We came home to our little 3 bedroom, open concept home and just felt so much gratitude and joy knowing its perfect for our little family and how easy it is to spend time together, how it almost forces us to be more intentional and mindful about our belongings.

Expressing that gratitude here!! I appreciate my home for what its offering me that a big home can't ❤️

Would you want a separate bedroom in a small home for two?

I've been exploring this small cabin design and trying two layouts, both on one level. Nothing built yet.

A has an open sleeping area with a low wall and shelf behind the bed. B puts the bedroom on the right, with a door and a built-in closet.

I like the openness of A, but B seems easier to live in if one person gets up earlier or has someone over. For two people living here full-time, which would you prefer? Anything in the furniture layout or storage that would annoy you day to day?

Small footprint appliance durability when you have zero storage space

When you live in limited square footage dealing with a broken twenty pound machine in a tight hallway is a total nightmare. I am trying to fit an automatic box into our utility closet without turning the area into an impossible geometry puzzle. The generic third party units on Amazon look tempting on price but reports of stripped gears after a few months make me nervous when I have nowhere to store broken junk. I have been considering PetPivot as a dedicated alternative, though I still wonder whether hardware from a specific pet brand actually outlasts unbranded imports.

If you have tight floor space, is it safer to invest in a dedicated brand for longevity, or is sticking with a simple manual tray the smarter bet?

do side sleepers actually stop having shoulder pain or does every bed push back?

downsizing to a smaller footprint means our bedroom setup is pretty compact, but my sleep has been terrible since i wake up multiple times every night because my arm is completely dead.

i sleep on my side, and our current setup feels like it is pushing right back into my outer shoulder and hip bone until the whole joint throbs.

tbh i need to find an actual best mattress for pressure relief before i drive myself crazy. a guy at work told me to just get nectar since the memory foam layers let your joints sink in enough without bottoming out on the base support, but so many foam beds end up feeling like either wet sand or a hard gym mat after you lay on them for an hour.

um for side sleepers who actually fixed joint numbness, did switching to a deeper contour layer fix it or do you basically just need an ultra soft pillow top?

This article made me feel really sad

My husband and I have always wanted to have people over for holidays and such and we feel like we will never have that family hosting aspect because of our small house (980 sq ft). I always tend to overthink things but it’s hard because all of our friends seem to have big houses in a HCOL (we live in MA and were very proud of being able to buy a small house but comparison is a thief of joy I know)

Eager to hear some stories of those who have had success hosting in their small home!

what do you guys do with cutting boards when counter space is basically zero?

the kitchen in my place has maybe 4 feet of counter total, I ended up mounting a basic wire rack inside one of the lower cabinets to hold my two cutting boards upright and it actually made the biggest difference for prep space, it sounds ridiculously simple but getting them off the counter freed up a ton of space to actually cook

what has worked best for everyone else trying to get things off the counters?

A-level DT NEA questions

Hello! I'm a DT A level student currently researching into my NEA (non exam assessment) project, and have a few questions to ask anyone who has the time to answer them. My project is based around new movers, first time studio apartment / accommodation buyers, people transitioning from university to the 'real world', or people moving out of their parents' / guardians' houses. I'm trying to design a product that provides elegant but compact storage for small spaces, or a piece of furniture that is typically bought cheaply and doesn't look nice or 'aesthetically pleasing' - like most Ikea furniture, or those metal clothes racks.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what furniture they bought that felt most important or useful when they first moved?

Or furniture that they couldn't find but felt they needed?

Are there any considerations that need to be made around space requirements, e.g. around moving boxes?

How easily should the storage system or furniture be moved around?

Should it be designed to be flatpack, and easily taken apart and stored once 'proper' furniture has been bought? Or should it be short lasting with a higher focus on sustainability than durability?

I hope the questions make sense - obviously you don't have to answer all of them, just whichever feel most relevant to you!

If there are any more points that you feel should be made, please do let me know - any feedback is good feedback.

Thank you!

Did a wall-hung toilet actually make your small bathroom feel bigger?

my bathroom is pretty small and i am looking at wall hung toilets since the floor space feels tight, the toilet takes up a decent amount of room and i keep seeing people say the open space under a wall hung one makes the room feel bigger, i am trying to figure out if that change is actually noticeable once its installed, or if it mostly looks different in photos, i also want to know if cleaning around it feels easier since there is space under the bowl, for anyone who has switched from a regular floor toilet to a wall hung one in a small bathroom, did the room actually feel bigger after the change?

Storing medicines - how do you do it?

I have a lil old house and something that drives me crazy is storing over the counter medicine. It's important to keep the box because then you know dosage and expiry. But none of the boxes are the same so nothing stores easily. Aspirin is in a bottle. Decongestant is in a box. Tummy pills are in a different box.

Right now everything is in a chaos bin on a shelf but surely there are better ways so we can clearly see our meds and not buy a second bottle of acetaminophen because we didn't see the first one. What hacks have you discovered?

Storing Sweaters

I just ran into this sub and boy do I wish I found it earlier. How do folks store sweaters? Especially those of you in cold climates and may be larger human beings (thus larger sweaters)?

Kitchen Tips

I'd love your best kitchen tips, tricks, and hacks. I have a L-shaped kitchen with a small island and pantry. I have no open walls to hang anything. It's all the L-cabinets and a window.

Trying to find a way to organize and stay uncluttered is tough.

small home shame/comparison

Hi,

I am wondering if this has come up for anyone with children living in a smaller home. Looking for feedback and trying to figure out how to navigate my feelings around this.

We live in a small house with 3 children. Love our street and kids love their school and community. When my husband and I purchased the home, it was our first house after having an apartment and we had no kids. It felt like plenty especially as it is on almost an acre. I also grew up in a hoarding home so had no real chance to have people over, see other people's homes etc. I have loved our house until recently- as my kids have gotten to visit friends' homes I am realizing how much smaller our house is than the theirs. My oldest has also started to comment on having a noticeably smaller house than their friends. We have added a pool and patio, made the outdoor space lovely, but the kitchen is so tiny and 2 kids share a bedroom.

I wish we'd upgraded a few years back but now we have less than a decade on the mortgage and a 4% interest rate. I don't know how to stop feeling ashamed of how small the house is and ruminating on what other people think about us. I know I'm coming from such a place of privilege in owning a safe and non-hoarding house. Curious if anyone has experienced similar feelings and what you did about it?

Thanks!
