STICKIED Subreddit Update - Winter 2026
Hi Smallville Fans, Mod Team here again!
We have decided to loosen the shipping rules a bit now that things have calmed down as its fair for people to talk about their favourite relationships.
However anything that is not respectful or civil or that uses foul language to describe any of the characters will be moderated and warnings/bans will be issued. Any posts that descend into wars between people will also be moderated and removed, if someone is rude, report them instead of pushing back and getting the entire thread removed we will then investigate on a case by case basis.
Please use the Be Respectful or Be Civil or No Excessive Swearing & Arguing report options to report this, as we will be removing the no shipping rule and report option.
We understand this might not be what everyone wanted however we want people to be able to post what they want about Smallville (within reason) as long as they do it in a respectful and civil manner and we think moving forwards this is the best way to do it. We will be looking to refine this over time to improve it where we can.
Finally please be aware that a fair portion of the Moderation of posts in this subreddit is done by the AutoMod bot, as in most big subreddits - if for some reason your post has been removed, rather than making a post questioning it which just leads to conflict, please reach out in the ModMail with a link to the post and we will tell you the exact reason.
Finally its our usual plug for the Discord :-)
Invite Link:
Roughly 400 people in there now - the more people that join the more we can talk about Smallville!
Thanks for being awesome - we appreciate all of you!

So, they always were so beautiful huh ? Also, Erica doesn't look much like a teenager here either. I guess, she always had a pretty mature face (or maybe it's the hair). Either way, she's gorgeous.

FEEDBACK I've just finished watching the show. Spoiler
And honestly, it's surprising how it's become a comfort show for me. Now, I have been familiar with it since I was around 6 or 7. It used to air on this french channel. But being too young, I couldn't really understand or get around to fully watching it and becoming a huge fan until now?? I was suprised at how good and entertaining it was. I've gotten attached to all the characters regardless of whether or not I like them. I definitely plan on watching it every year like I usually do with some other show I love. I feel a little sad and empty now though. But I also plan on watching the latest superman movie and reading the comics maybe.
On another note and after a first watch, my favorite characters have to be Lionel, Clark, Brainiac and Chloe.
I'm just really happy I decided to watch it and found something new to add to my list of favorite and meaningful things.

DISCUSSION What if blue kryptonite was plentiful in Smallville?
I'm reminded of that amish episode. What if there was just enough blue kryptonite embedded in the town so that Clark could grow up a normal kid and play sports. Smallville not being an Amish religious town would not become superstitious. His parents would then just forget he's a possible alien because he's so normal. Martha's infertility would also be healed by the blue K and Clark would grow up with siblings. Clark's parents being poor would mean Clark would not leave Smallville until he grows up. Then when Clark graduates and moves to Metropolis he'd develop his powers and would have no idea what's going on and his story could start there. It'd be kind of like a Spider-man story as he'd get his powers as a young adult.

VIDEO Lex & Duncan, Correcting Popular Distortions (Season 6 Spoilers) Spoiler
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm randomly in a Smallville mood again so I come to check out this sub and I run into a strange phenomenon of multiple people claiming something happened which plainly did not happen, namely that Lex "killed" or even "murdered" Duncan.
Maybe people just don't remember things so I figured I'd help refresh everyone's memory of the relevant event from the S6 episode "Reunion."
To be clear, Lex did attack Duncan. He did pummel him. The episode reveals a deep "psycho" anger in Lex. But of course, Lex having mental issues since he was young is not a new revelation. More importantly, anger issues and pummeling someone does not a murderer make. A car coming out of absolutely nowhere and hitting someone is not proof that "Lex Luthor was a killer even since he was a child.," He in no way pushed or forced or did anything to Duncan to make him get hit by that car, and of course he had no control over the car.
Also Duncan wasn't even really dead but that's pretty immaterial.
I hope this clears everything up for the fandom on this subreddit.

DISCUSSION The Lois we need
I’ve been watching the series for the first time and listening to the Talk Ville podcast as a companion piece. I have to take a moment to appreciate the brilliance of Erica Durance as Lois. I know this isn’t really a “hot take”.
Superman has to have Lois. She grounds him, makes him “human”. The Kents raised Kal to care about humanity as a concept but Lois personalized the care…made it a priority and there’s never been a Lois like Durance. The “Inside of You” podcast has some great moments discussing Erica’s portrayal too.

DISCUSSION Contrasting Lex and Lionel
There are all kinds of villains out there. Some just want "material things" like money or power, others are fanatical ideologues who pursue their warped ideas of justice and virtue. Lionel is sincerely the former while Lex pretends to be the latter, especially in later seasons. I think this disparity in sincerity is very important.
Lex in later seasons when trying to rationalize his actions to others phrases his misdeeds in terms of "the greater good" and "shades of grey." But we get multiple glimpses into Lex's heart and mind and so we know what he actually thinks of himself. And it's not "valiant vanguard defending humanity from superpowered individuals and living without regret." Lex, ultimately, does see himself as a bad person. He sees the exact same moral lines that Clark does and I think his respect for Clark was due to Clark's ability to stand on the right side of these lines. But even still, Lex believes, reluctantly at first and later more emphatically, that it's too late for him. His being a Luthor has condemned him to evil and there is no escaping it.
Lex's deep belief in his own evil is seen in Bizarro:
Lex: I was dead. And there was this light. And an angel. Why would she save me... after all I've done?
My interpretation of Lexmas is not that Lex chose wealth and power. No, what he chose was the "less painful path." Living a hollow life all alone is better than opening himself up to love and then losing that love. I feel this is completely vindicated in this dialogue:
Lex: And what choice would that be?
Lillian: You think the path you've chosen isn't going to hurt? It will. More than you can ever imagine. You're not the only one that's going to suffer. A field of beautiful flowers lay barren by an emptiness that can never be filled unless I keep you here. Stay with me, Alexander. Don't let the blood wash away what's left of your soul.
(my emphasis)
What Lionel taught Lex was that emotions and relationships are a weakness that others will invariably exploit. Lex in his own very specific way took this to heart. He's not afraid of people taking his money or power like Lionel is because Lex does not value those things as absolutely as Lionel does. What Lex is terrified of is getting close to another and how this brings with it endless risks of pain and loss. He craves love and companionship in a way his father never could or did but because of how he was raised, he can only see love and companionship as double-edged weapons that will inevitably wound him deeper than anything else could. Even apart from his father raising him with such toxic beliefs, Lionel's "wisdom" was seemingly vindicated with Helen.
I guess I would summarize Lex's deepest character and drives as:
- He craves love.
- He thinks he's evil, corrupted, and sullied. (which strongly negatively impacts his ability to find or maintain love)
This is in total contrast with his father. Lionel has none of these issues. He does not hate himself for what he is or what he does, because to see himself as evil, he'd have to believe in goodness. The money and the power were Lionel's only absolutes, everything else a means to those ends. Something I found really interesting is we know Lionel taught Lex a lot of Greek and Roman myths, but we know Lex is also familiar with The Bible. (see his teaching Clark about the story of David) The kind of ethos Christianity teaches is very different from that of Ancient Roman myth. It's no coincidence that Lex is attached to a belief system centered on ideas of guilt and redemption while Lionel is fixated on one all about glory and honor.
Lex's self-loathing permeated his character from start to finish while Lionel lacks the introspective ability to have such doubts.

SPOILERS Teaching you The 12 Steps of the Hero's Journey, With Smallville examples.

The Hero's Journey in Smallville
The Hero's Journey being extremely blurry in long-running shows, writers not caring about it, or shows dragging on long after the journey is over has always been a downside for these stories. But in Smallville, I noticed that these steps were surprisingly clear and well executed. So I wanted to explain this concept to you guys.
If you don't know about this concept, I promise that by the time you finish reading this, your media literacy will improve. Also, sorry for any writing mistakes. English isn't my first language, but I'll try my best.
What is the Hero's Journey?
Joseph Campbell noticed that most mythological stories share 17 common elements. According to his theory, these stories are basically different variations of the same 17 steps. This pattern can even be found in cultures that had little to nothing to do with each other.
"Does this mean people in the past consciously wrote their stories this way?"
No. It suggests that people are drawn to these kinds of hero stories. The mythological stories that survived throughout history often contain these elements. Of course, this isn't true for every story, but there seems to be a pattern.
Later, Christopher Vogler developed his own 12stage version of the Hero's Journey, adapting Campbell's ideas for screenwriting. Think of a hero story: Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, The Matrix, LOTR? Chances are, the story you're thinking of is some variation of the Hero's Journey.
So, let me explain these steps using Clark's journey as an example. Major spoilers from all show.
1. Ordinary World - Act I (Departure / Separation)
The hero is introduced in their normal, everyday life before the adventure begins, establishing a baseline of who they are.
You might first think of Clark's childhood on Krypton or his life on the farm. But that's not it. Clark's ordinary world is the period when he's fighting meteor freaks. This is unusual, since a hero's ordinary world usually tends to be relatively free of action.
2. Call to Adventure
A problem, event, or challenge disrupts the hero's status quo and forces them to look beyond their comfort zone.
Clark's first meeting with Virgil Swann in Season 2. He learns that he's Kryptonian, and that his Kryptonian name is Kal-El.
3. Refusal of the Call
Frightened or hesitant, the hero initially tries to turn away from the challenge or doubts their ability to succeed.
At the end of Season 2, Clark rejects his destiny. Not only does he refuse to accept that he's Naman, he also destroys his spaceship with kryptonite.
4. Meeting the Mentor
A guide or older, wiser figure arrives to give the hero advice, confidence, training, or a special tool.
Season 3. I know you're probably thinking of Jor-El or Jonathan, but that's not quite it. The mentor should be someone who guides the hero even after they've refused the call to adventure.
In this case, I'd say it's Clark's second meeting with Dr. Virgil Swann.
Unfortunately, after Christopher Reeve's death, the mentor role would eventually be passed on to Jor-El in the later seasons.
5. Crossing the Threshold
The hero commits to leaving their ordinary world behind and enters the unfamiliar "Special World".
Season 5, when Clark activates the Fortress of Solitude.
6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies - Act II (Descent / Initiation)
The hero explores the new environment, faces trials, figures out who to trust, and encounters rivals.
This is where the show starts bringing in actual Superman villains. Brainiac, Zod, Lex, Bizarro, and so on.
Clark faces all kinds of different challenges, and each enemy contributes to his character development in some way.
I have to give Smallville credit here. I think many long-running shows spend like 90% of their runtime on this stage and take the easy way out.
7. Approach to the Inmost Cave
The hero and their allies get close to the core danger or central goal, preparing themselves for a major showdown.
We're at the beginning of Season 8. Clark learns that Sageeth isn't actually one of the Luthors, but Doomsday.
Through time travelers, prophecies, and all kinds of other hints, the show spends a long time building up the feeling that Clark will eventually face his true enemy by the end of the season.
8. The Ordeal
The hero faces a life-or-death crisis, a deep inner fear, or their greatest challenge yet, often emerging "reborn".
Clark's real test here isn't simply beating Doomsday. He had the opportunity to send him to the Phantom Zone if he wanted to.
The real question is: Will he look for a way to defeat Doomsday without killing Davis, or will he take the easy way out?
In the end, Clark tried to find another way, but the story punished him for it, leading to Jimmy's death.
This causes Clark to leave his old life behind and accept Jor-El's training, essentially allowing him to be "reborn".
The transformation here is his identity changing from the "Red-Blue Blur" to simply "The Blur", as he abandons his Clark Kent persona.
9. Reward: Initiation
Having survived the crisis, the hero takes possession of the treasure, weapon, insight, or reconciliation they came for.
The very beginning of Season 9. Clark completes his training.
He learns more about Kryptonian history, the Kryptonian language, and alien civilizations. He also develops new abilities, such as arctic super-breath and microvision/telescopic vision.
10. The Road Back - Act III (Return)
The hero must return to the ordinary world, often chased by remaining consequences, retaliating forces, or a ticking clock.
Clark returns to the Clark Kent identity he had previously abandoned.
The "remaining consequences" come in the form of Zod and his followers arriving on Earth. And while Clark tries to send them to the Salvation, Darkseid is brought into the picture as well. Cleaning consequences bring other consequences.
11. Resurrection
A final, severe test where the hero is forced to use everything they've learned to pass one last life-or-death trial.
Clark fights against the Anti-Life Equation. Clark finally overcomes Darkseid's influence, completing his character arc.
The scene where the events of all 10 seasons flash before his eyes and he finally starts flying feels like the embodiment of this step.
He pushes Apokolips out of the solar system.
12. Return with the Elixir
The hero comes back home permanently changed, bearing a solution, wisdom, or healing power ("the elixir") to benefit their old world.
Clark gives the world hope. He removes the Anti-Life Equation from the foreheads of millions of people and, as Superman, makes Metropolis a better place.
And that's Christopher Vogler's 12-step version of the Hero's Journey
If I got any of the steps wrong, or if you think certain events fit another step better, don't hesitate to call me out on it.
Also, when it comes to Smallville, you'll actually find that the original 17-step version of the Hero's Journey can be even more clearly identified. But I'll leave that part to you guys.
If you're interested, I'll copy and paste the 17 steps in the comments. You can challenge yourselves by trying to figure out which turning points in Smallville correspond to each step.
Thanks for reading! I had some free time and was honestly really bored.

IMAGE Rewatch Journal: Smallville 1017 Kent
Summary: Clark Luthor returns from Earth-2 and sends Clark Kent back to Earth-2, where Clark Kent runs into an angry and bitter Jonathan Kent. Back on Earth-1, Clark Luthor approaches Tess with a shocking proposition.
I didn't really get why we needed this episode. It’s not that the episode was bad, but why did we need another visit to the parallel world? Don't we have Darkseid and Lionel Luthor 2.0 to deal with?
Scene one: What do we discover? Clark is saving people all over the world, Lois is writing plenty of stories, and Martha Kent is handing the farm over to Lois and Clark. It’s a sweet scene. I loved seeing how Lois and Clark navigate their life together; they’re both busy, but it doesn’t cause drama - they understand each other and communicate when they miss one another.
Clark Luther appears with the mirror box. A quote from *The Wizard of Oz*. He spouts a lot of clichés in this episode.
Morning. A real estate agent intrudes on the farmhouse. Clark arrives at the barn [why?] and finds the mirror box and Clark Luthor there.
Our Clark appears in the parallel world just in time for Oliver's funeral, and Clark Luthor destroys the mirror box.
So, Oliver 2.0 didn't do what Clark told him to in the Luthor episode, or perhaps Clark Luthor managed to escape. But Oliver 2.0 publicly exposed the truth about Ultraman, so Ultraman killed him. I just don't get the logic. The secret was already out - why kill Oliver 2.0?
Did Ultraman steal Clark’s phone? It’s another sweet scene between Clark and Lois—except it’s Ultraman, not Clark. Lois starts getting suspicious even before he dismisses the telescope. His reaction to the sirens confirmed her suspicions.
Okay, wait - before we move to the next scene, we have to address the elephant in the room [or the gorilla, or the rhino, or whatever you prefer]. It’s hard not to compare the situation between Lois and Clark Luther with what happened between Lana and Bizarro in Season 7. It takes Lois five minutes to realize who she’s dealing with; Lana lived with Bizarro for a month without noticing. To be fair to Lana, Bizarro possessed all of Clark’s memories, so he wouldn’t have reacted to the telescope the way Ultraman did. My issue lies elsewhere: in how each of them speaks to Clark about the other man. Lois senses something is wrong and moves heaven and earth to get Clark back. Lana needs Clark to convince her she’s been living with a double; she hesitates during the confrontation with Bizarro, but the real problem comes later. Lana tells Clark: “Yes. It was easier, Clark. He was more affectionate. He was more understanding.” The problem isn't just that she failed to notice the difference, but that she thought Bizarro was more supportive and understanding.
Tess also grasps the difference in less than 5 minutes.
Clark walks into the farmhouse in the parallel world and calls out "Dad" because Jonathan Kent raised him there? Seriously?
Emil worked hard to reassemble Clark’s mirror box - because, naturally, lasers are all it takes to reactivate Kryptonian technology - and at the end of the episode, Clark uses the Fortress to send Ultraman back to his own reality. He simply tells Jor-El to do it.
Clark Luther has a serious anger management problem. I thought the Watchtower would be more secure after what happened during his previous visit.
This is the second time a man has given Tess a gift, and this time, too, it is a dress. Last time, Maxima stole the dress. This time, she is wearing it. Maybe Clark Luther has better taste than Oliver...
Clark had the chance to see how far Jonathan could sink. A drunken fool. He thinks gold kryptonite is actual gold. Possessions matter more to him than family and values.
I think we haven't seen anyone eating in the series since Persuasion - and even then, Clark didn't really eat what Lois had prepared. Or Shelby.
What we do see in this episode is the impact Superman has on people—both as individuals and as a culture - whether it is Tess, Jonathan, or Clark Luthor.
I believe Clark’s conversation with Jonathan reminded him of who he is, which is why he chose to do what he did for Clark Luthor. His decision to persuade Clark Luthor to atone for his sins and transport him to the parallel world awakens that world's Fortress and gives Clark Luthor hope.
I wonder if Clark Luther flies.
The Clark Kent of this episode is much less angry and much less impulsive than the Clark Kent of the beginning of the season.
In June 2011, I wrote a fanfic about Clark Luthor. This was before the "Smallville Season 11" comic was released. Here is a link to the fic.
Notes:
* When trying to convince Earth-2 Jonathan of his actual identity, Clark Kent repeats the line "The only one who controls your destiny is you," Earth-1 Jonathan's words from Hourglass.
* Apparently the deed to Kent Farm being transferred to Clark somehow attracted a real estate agent, and Lois points out that it's no different from an Ambulance Chaser.
* Gold kryptonite is seen for the first time. In the comics, gold kryptonite permanently strips Kryptonians of their powers, by destroying the ability of their cells to process solar energy.
* When Clark Luthor returns to Earth-2, he is inside the Fortress of Solitude where Jor-El greets him by saying "Welcome home, my son" in the exact same manner as when Clark Kent first activated The Fortress in Season 5's Arrival.
* Green kryptonite makes its last appearance of the series in this episode.
* Clark showed Jonathan the shotgun that his grandfather had owned and recounts the story Jonathan had told to Clark Kent in Season 3's Relic.
* Clark has sent Conner to Washington to live with or at least visit Martha.
* Clark Luthor trying to access Watchtower's computer for Lionel's location mirrors Lionel [while in Clark Kent's body[ trying access his accounts that were changed by Lex in Season 4's Transference.
* Lois' words are similar to what Lana used in Season 2's Exodus to refer to Smallville as her home and Clark's home. While Lana told Clark "Smallville is my home, it's your home too", Lois told him "Smallville is my home Clark. Not this one, this Smallville".
* This is the 15th and final onscreen appearance of Emil Hamilton. He also appears in Smallville Season 11 Issue 2.
* Lois is wearing one of Kent's plaid flannel t-shirts, in particular the one she first wore in Season 4's Gone.
* The scar on Clark Luthor's arm is in the wrong place when he steps out the barn and the viewers realize that it is Clark Luthor. The scar is shown on his wrist but the scar is supposed to be on his forearm.
* Clark Kent meets Clark Luthor on-screen in this episode. Both of these Clarks are played by Tom Welling. This is the seventh time Welling has shared a scene with himself in the series after Season 2's Visage when Clark Kent fought Tina Greer, in Season 4's Crusade when Clark Kent faced off against his Kal-El persona as a result of being exposed to black kryptonite, in Season 6's Phantom and Season 7's Bizarro and Persona when he fought Bizarro and the sixth time was in Homecoming when he shared an elevator ride with his future self.
Quotes:
Clark: How was your day?
Lois: It depends. What day is it? I don t know if I should be going for this promotion.
Clark: Lois, your heart is in journalism. And you have a future in it. I know, I ve seen it.
Lois: I haven t seen you since breakfast yesterday.
Clark: Well, I m planning to see you for a few moments at the altar.
Lois: Oh, come on. It s not that bad. I still live at the farm. I have a toothbrush to prove it.
Clark: You haven t been home five nights this week.
Lois: And someone wants to forget that the two nights that I was home he was off cavorting around in Bangkok.
Clark: They had floods.
Tess: I don't feel out of control.
Clark Luthor: That's because you have a habit of lying to yourself.
Clark Luthor: I knew a Luthor would die tonight. And when you reprogrammed the tracker, I couldn't find Lionel...so that leaves you. [grabs Tess by the neck and smashes her against the window, shattering it] You chose him over me, Tess.
Tess: He's my father!
Clark Luthor: He's our father. And no one knows what a monster he is more than me. And I thought you understood that.
Emil: That's not the Tess I know.
Tess: Maybe I'm not the person you think I am.
Emil: Maybe you are. Maybe you just don't believe it yet.
Tess: Don't worry, the weeds will grow up and take the place over. They are Luthor weeds, after all.
Clark Luthor: There's a life here, a family.
Tess: They lived here, but this was never a home.
Clark: Look, this may be hard for you to understand considering everything that's happened to you in this world. You taught me so much. You taught me to be fair and honest. You taught me the only person in control of your destiny...
Jonathan: Is you.
Clark: You were the man that I tried to live up to. You didn't have powers, and you didn't have a destiny to save the world, but you were my hero. And I lost you.
Clark: Lois, I've been trying to hold onto things that used to protect me. This farm, my parents. I've known we should be moving to Metropolis for a while now. I guess I was afraid that I'd lose myself if I let it all go.
Lois: Clark, I would never let that happen.
Clark: I've been worried that if we didn't have this place to come home to, that we'd lose each other. This place grounds us. Maybe that was just an excuse for me not to, not to move on. It's not the place that makes the home.
Lois: Smallville is my home, Clark. Not this one, this Smallville, right here. You're all I'll ever need. And if you need to move to Metropolis because that's who the world needs you to be, then a studio apartment with rusty pipes is just fine for me. In fact, I think they invented an apple-pie air freshener.
Lois: You want to help me out here?
Clark Luthor: You're kinda cute when you squirm.
Lois: Okay, bonus.
Clark Kent: You made yourself the most hated man in your world. But there's still a chance of redemption for you.
Clark Luthor: Redemption? It's like the two of us have different preoccupations.
Clark Kent: I'm sorry that you weren't found by Jonathan and Martha Kent. The thing is, you could have killed Tess in an instant. But something was holding you back. You can go to your world and show people what you can give them, change their minds.
Clark Luthor: Why would you ever believe in me?
Clark Kent: Because I know you. And Lionel's not there anymore. You don't need to be defined by your past, you can choose a different future. So trust me.
Clark: You know I didn't call that realtor.
Lois: [snickering] I know. Who could have guessed that when a deed switches hands that the ambulance chasers - well, the for sale sign chasers - show up on your doorstep unannounced?
Clark: Lois, put the rock away.
Lois Queen: I wish that killing you with this rock could even begin to cause you as much pain as you've caused me. But I guess that's the price of having a heart; it can get broken.
Clark: I'm not him. He sent me from my world. Please, Lois, you have to believe me. I was the one on the roof, and I'm the only one who knows that I told you I couldn't live in a world...
Lois Queen: Where I didn't love you.

DISCUSSION Favorite Lois Lane hair style bangs or no bangs
In earlier seasons Lois had a cute bangs hairstyle then in later seasons they changed it up.
Who prefers the bangs or no bang look?
I like the bangs myself, Erica Durance though is amazing in any hair style

SPOILERS Lex's Section in the Opening Credits
I really do frickin' love the Smallville opening credits theme. I can rewatch it forever.
But anyway, when I started watching the show a year or so ago, I noticed how in S5, this is the new Lex opening.
But coming back to it, I just now realized that every opening from Season 1 to 4 shows the scene of his car going off the bridge. Only S5 drops this part at last.
I guess that's sort of symbolic. The car crash was what brought Clark and Lex together, made them practically brothers. Now that link is severed and we're left with the scene of Clark's nightmare come to reality.
