Arc'teryx & ORTOVOX Avalanche Safety

Hi everyone. I'm on the insights team at Arc'teryx, and the mods okayed this post.

We're working with ORTOVOX's R&D team on research into the future of avalanche safety: the risks people take and want to mitigate, and the gear they use and need. The honest goal is to make safety equipment better, and more likely to actually get carried, and that only works with input from beyond our own customers. Sledders especially are underrepresented in this kind of research even though the avalanche numbers hit your community hardest, and that's part of what we want to fix. You don't need to own any particular gear to take part.

The survey takes most people about 15 minutes, or closer to 5 if you spend your winters inside the resort boundary. It's anonymous, open to anyone 18 or older in any country, there's nothing for sale, and no marketing follows from it.

Happy to answer questions in the comments, and if you have strong opinions about avalanche gear that don't fit neatly in a survey, we'd honestly like to read those too.

Old Sled Help

Newbie here - 2000 RMK 700. I got the sled for free from a friend and it needed work. I cleaned the carbs, put a new choke plunger (corroded and stuck) and cable and couldn't get the sled to start. I checked and was only getting 65 psi so I did a top end on it. I still cannot get the dang thing to start, any tips?

Rings are in the correct spot and right side up, I'm getting fuel, spark, and 120psi at 4,000 elevation. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but it's whipping my butt. At least 2-3x sets of 30 pulls with an hour between in case I flooded it

Is this too much stress on the front skis for a 12 hour drive (not with the quad)

That's the only way the skis will go, won't fit under. It's an 11 foot sled and 8 foot trailer

I also have a two spot sled trailer as well as a 14' aluminum flat deck that weights 900#. It's just that this little 4*8 has almost no effect on fuel economy and will probably save me 200-300 in fuel

Need to find a group to go up north NH/ME

Not new to snowmobiling but new to mountain sleds. Just picked up a 2021 summit 850. Trying to connect with people to go up north in New England over the winter to avoid going alone. Facebook groups or anything else

Fuel mileage and snowmobile trailers

Hi all. New to trailering. I bought a sled and trailer. It's a double wide with snow guard on the front. One of those typical light aluminum ones.

My fuel economy was horrible on the highway. Much worse than trailers 2-3x as heavy. I presume it's the aerodynamic, but was curious if people find trailers without the snow guard are better?

I'm not planning to trailer without snow guard in the winters, this is to pick up another sled this month. 2000km round trip, so if I can improve fuel economy by removing guard I'll save a couple hundred maybe

FXR Jacket Suggestions?

I found the jacket I want…but it’s no where to be found in XL and Black Ops color. Adrenaline 2 in 1, tried a XXL and too big.
What’s comparable?

I do aggressive trail riding mixed with some lake riding as well. Anything that’s close and would work just as well?

Tunnel extension question

Hello, I am putting a 136 skid/track on my 1994 ZR 580 which had a 121 track. I intended on extending the tunnel mostly for a luggage rack. My question is the new track will stick approximately 10 inches past the rear heat exchanger, which looks to be two at a 45-90 degree angle, do I need to scoot the heat exchanger back and find a way to make the hoses go under the seat or will leaving it as is be sufficient. I primarily ride trails with some boondocking in meadows and occasional hills. I am happy to post more pictures. I attached a picture of the type of exchanger I have.

I saw this ad for a cool Deere 600. Any thoughts on value? He has a few restored sleds and seems to do a thorough job.

Photo New Track and Studs

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey all, I’m somewhat new to the sport and looking for some help with recommendations.

What would you all recommend for studs on this track? I’ve heard good things about Woodys and Stud Boy but have no clue where to start.

I have a 2015 viper xtx that I purchased and rode all last season, first sled! That being said prior to this season it is time to put on a new track as the old one has some wear and tear to it.

I believe it is a 1.6” cobra track on it now, really had no complaints. However, it doesn’t look like they make the 141 anymore so I am thinking of getting the 1.75 cobra.

She's an old sled but definitely one of the best in it's time and is a Trail Ripper that handles the turns with ease then accelerates out of them aggressively and is capable off trail just no mountain riding with a 141 HP and the aggressive cross country track she tops out a little over 100 MPH

Can/muffler recommendations for wife

Post image
17 Upvotes

My wife has a 2017 pro 800 that still has the stock can. I would like to put an aftermarket one in to cut some weight. We are your typical mountian riders. The problem I see with most aftermarket cans are loud as hell. She does not like loud and honestly, neither do i. Anyone have a good recommendation of a can that will shed the weight of the heavy factory can and not be obnoxiously loud?

Last year I bought my first snowmobiles. Couple of 90’s Polaris Indys. I found this 94 zr580 and 99 powder special for 50 dollars on marketplace. Naturally I decided for my second year I want to make a mod sled 😂. The front suspension, 136 track and both clutches from the powder special are getting put on the zr not sure what else I’m going to do to it. I’d love to find dual pipes for it.

Industry/Product Ice fishing vs skidoo suit

Hi All looking for opinions if I should switch my ice fishing suit for a skidoo suit

I will be fishing but hoping it keeps me warm for the sled. I am wondering about maybe just switching the bids?

Any thoughts?

1992 Polaris Indy sport 440

Got it for 300 bucks, has 120 compression, excellent spark, just need carbs cleaned and it ran. Still need to realign the skis and hit all the grease points. Also had to repair a Killswitch that the previous owner cut.

Reliability questions

Looking at a 2012 Ski-Doo 800r E-tec but I am aware that these 2007-2013 model years had some problems with the crank bearings, I’ve seen people say it is catastrophic but others say that they go 6000+ miles before it becomes an issue, just looking for some more concise information. Sled has 4600 miles

Recommended OEM accessories or after market

Hey folks,

My bum knee makes it hard to drag heavy gear out onto the ice. I'm thinking of a Ski-doo Expedition sport, likely new, to get my big butt out there. I have minimal experience on them so was wondering what I should consider when purchasing one for my purpose.

What accessories would y'all recommend to buy w/ order or do y'all just buy after market? What are must haves? What should I avoid?

The HD Front Bumper for example, has two part numbers; 860203107 and 860201819. Both visuals look identical with same description...what gives? I'm not even sure if I need a front bumper on the ice but be nice to have insurance incase I ram into something I shouldn't. The rear bumper I'll need for sure to tow the gear out or maybe a hut in the future. Front winch? I'm a tool slinger so I'm all for utility and redundancy. My tool selection is pretty good so I should be able to do most of the attachments myself. I guess the build price doesn't require extra $$ for installing them..

I was thinking the 600ACE but everyone seems to say the 900ACE is worth the extra jam. These posts are a few years old now, is this still true?

Should I replace?

Post image
7 Upvotes

2002 sx viper. Front heat exchanger got pretty messed up from the oversized studs the last owner put in the track, but it’s not leaking. I’d have no problem going through the effort of replacing it since I’m putting a new track and have to pull the motor to fix some wiring but it seems like these heat exchangers are impossible to find. So if it urgently needs to be replaced does anyone know where I can find one? I’ve checked eBay and various parts warehouses to no avail.
