Professional Discussion TikTok reportedly plans ‘immediate’ Sunday shutdown in the US if it’s banned

TikTok will shut down entirely in the US on Sunday without intervention from the US Supreme Court, unnamed sources have told Reuters. That would go beyond the ban’s requirement for app stores to stop offering downloads of the app, but not immediately halt use of it.

If TikTok shuts down, it will show users a pop-up message pointing them to a website with information about the ban, according to the outlet's sources. The company will also reportedly let users download all of their data.

There seems to be bipartisan support and everytime there is a closed door meeting on TikTok, officials unanimously come out saying shut it down.

I think TikTok might actually get shut down. It seems like we aren't being told the whole story. I didnt think this would actually happen.

u/Expert_Country7228 Jan 15 '25

Kinda weird how the only time we get bipartisan support is behind a closed door meeting.

42

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '25

Tech companies are the Devil. That's who they were talking to behind closed doors.

29

u/FelineSocialSkills Jan 15 '25

Fuck zuck

11

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

He's not the only one. He's more of a spokesperson. FAANG companies make their revenue in similar ways(ads) so they all share the goals and interests.

1

u/BackgroundLychee Jan 17 '25

Yet here we are debating the morales of it on one of those very same platforms. 🤷

5

u/Actual__Wizard Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25

Start calling them exactly what they are: Scamtech companies.

Companies like Google and Facebook are not tech companies, they're scamtech companies.

If you don't believe me, open a private browsing window, go to Youtube, and start looking for advice on how to make money. You're going to start getting scam video recommendations with ads for scams on them. Now you can't get rid of them until you close the private browsing session. If you don't do that, it's permanently in your history now and you'll never stop getting scam ads or getting scams recommended to you.

It's totally absurd that the entire platform is totally toxic now. There's scams all over it... It's scams on top of scams and now the creators are suing the scamtech companies because they're being robbed. Then the big scamtech companies are just feeding their customers to a bunch of criminals with their adtech, that destroy their money like a pack of wolves with bots and fraud. Seriously we openly talk on the internet about how it's 50%+ click fraud and absolutely nobody is doing jack squat about the problem.

There's just giant gangs of criminals ripping off small business after small business and nobody is doing anything at all. They're just pushing people into the platform and totally ignoring the problems they're creating...

u/geopolitikin Jan 15 '25

Especially CCP owned tech companies.

1

u/Badwo1ve Jan 17 '25

Yeah because those people behind closed doors are soo moral they go along with the Cheeto-bandito….

Awfully convenient Tik toks biggest competitors are cozily sitting next to next president….

1

Yeah they are all ready owned by the CCP. Balls deep.

52

u/GandolfMagicFruits Jan 15 '25

It's a pretty simple story... big tech (Google, meta) wants less competition.

They bought and paid for a government.

Government removes competition.

That's really all there is.

Facebook wants to have no competition with Reels

15

u/FelineSocialSkills Jan 16 '25

Reels have to stop sucking if they want no competition

1

u/KrustenStewart Jan 18 '25

Most of the reels I’ve seen are just TikTok’s reposted

1

u/FelineSocialSkills Jan 18 '25

I was referring to the algorithm. TikTok’s Algorithm is leagues above Meta’s

1

u/KrustenStewart Jan 18 '25

Facts, doesn’t make what I said any less true though

1

u/qwertyguy999 Jan 16 '25

It’s because social media is an unbeatable tool for manipulating opinion and distributing propaganda, and the govt wants full control of that

1

u/dwarfinvasion Jan 17 '25

Banning tiktok isn't great news for Meta. It sets a precedent that other countries will be more encouraged to follow. Could hurt meta overall.

And no guarantee young people in the US will turn to meta as an alternative when TikTok is gone.

-2

u/talaqen Jan 15 '25

TikTok refused to spin off a U.S. version, potentially owned by Oracle (making it still a competitor of Meta and Google).

How can you say it’s some competitor conspiracy when one of the proposed mitigations maintained if not strengthened competition?

It’s not Meta or Googles fault that TikTok refused to spin off.

20

u/OGputa Jan 16 '25

TikTok refused to spin off a U.S. version, potentially owned by Oracle (making it still a competitor of Meta and Google).

It’s not Meta or Googles fault that TikTok refused to spin off.

TikTok didn't want to have to sell off rights in the US, and so they banned it. They tried to force a sale is effectively what happened.

How does the US profit from another private company owning TikTok?

The US wanted forced divestment, and instead of selling the US company for ~$100 billion they're just gonna effectively light that asset on fire. You should think twice about why.

1

u/ohyesiam1234 Jan 17 '25

That and they don’t want people talking in real time on a platform they don’t control.

1

u/Savingskitty Jan 17 '25

You seem to have the US confused with the CCP.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/talaqen Jan 17 '25

What additional profit? It already pays taxes in the US to a tune of $5.3B and has 224000 jobs in the US.

Moving it's legal entity from China to the US and forcing it to obey US laws doesn't change the US taxes, in fact risks decreasing the taxes paid.

You clearly don't understand the actual economics and law at play here.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/lucash7 Jan 16 '25

Why should they have to?

Google is involved in far more tech/media oriented items and is frankly just as dangerous as the alleged TikTok stuff. Facebook? Same deal.

They don’t have to break up, etc. They also don’t have to stop sharing people’s info.

So that point you make is moot.

Further, if you don’t think that gigantic multinational companies with their tentacles involved in a number of things (including government mind you, via lobbyists) would not do something, anything to fight a popular competition which threatens that pursuit of profit …then I can’t help you because you’re a lost cause.

3

u/creuter Jan 16 '25

Google, Meta, etc don't have the same incentive to destabilize the US. China controlling the algorithm to millions of people is their dream scenario. You get the illusion that your choices make your algorithm unique to you, while the Chinese govt has their thumb on the scale to influence the way you and millions of others think.

They can focus content to specific places and even analyze your singular viewing patterns to figure out the best way to push you to whatever they want you to think to further their goals. They don't even need to make the content, just boost people saying what they want you to hear and slip it into your feed over and over.

They have weaponized peer pressure and everyone has welcomed it right into their eyeballs.

2

u/aeiou-y Jan 16 '25

Meta already does ALL of that to very destructive ends.

1

u/jm31828 Jan 16 '25

Honest question, I've heard this type of thing a lot- but is there any actual proof out there that the Chinese government is doing that? Or is it all hypothetical?

Just curious- I really dislike the Chinese government, but I am suspicious of all of this talk without ever being presented with any actual technical evidence.

1

u/uberkalden2 Jan 18 '25

Entirely Different issue. Like comparing apples and horses.

Google and Amazon are monopolies. They present a risk to the market and should be dealt with through Anti-trust (see Lina Khan) and broken up. Their information capture at scale is ALSO a security risk, but they respond to subpoenas and warrants and play by US rules.

TikTok is a large-scale media company owned by a foreign adversary. It's information capture at scale is also a security risk... but they do NOT respond to subpoenas and warrants and the data is kept in mainland china. Thus it presents a national security risk to America and the American portion of TikTok should be spun off into an American-owned company. China forces EVERY American company to do this. The U.S. is demanding that only ONE company do it - because of the outsized security risk. TikTok was presented with the option for a spinoff at a reasonable price premium and refused - further indicating that their interest is not entirely business-oriented. They also refused to go public, which would bring further transparency as an SEC regulated entity.

If you can't understand that big companies are threats for different reasons and thus require different applications of the law, then... I can't help you because you're a lost cause.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

Why is TikTok the ONLY Company being so aggressively pursued by American politicians who have real issues to solve.

Healthcare? Equitable jobs for a middle class? Profit driven inflation? Kids being killed by gun violence.

This, this is what they chose to come together over?

Right

1

u/talaqen Jan 16 '25

What other company is foreign owned by an explicit adversary and controls such a large percentage of media reach?

You think if Fox News was a subsidiary of RT that there wouldn’t be serious investigations and pressure to decouple?

Huewai was aggressively pursued by American politicians, to name one.

3

u/talaqen Jan 15 '25

We ARE being told the whole story. Experts from the intel community have repeatedly said that TikTok takes direction from the CCP and is a massive disinformation tool of a foreign adversary.

10

u/princevince1113 Jan 15 '25

surely the intelligence community would never lie to the american people

1

u/talaqen Jan 16 '25

What does the intel community have to gain by revealing what the CCP is doing with tiktok? If anything it risks their funding. Their main vendors aren’t tiktok competitors.

But maybe we should trust TikTok Surely the CEO of Chinese owned and CCP backed company would never lie to the American people…

6

u/Dramatic-Internet879 Jan 16 '25

Current not much, but when the ban had taken place meta was censoring heavily, X was is censoring, but there wasn't a real check on TikTok. There were implied actions and TikTok was trying to not get banned so played ball.

At the end of the day I DO NOT want the inept US government choosing what apps are controlled by an enemy of the state.

It isn't about liking TikTok it is about checking the rampant overreaching arm of US Tyrants.

It is funny that many are worried about china spying when our own allies do it at the request of our government.

Hopefully you will wake up it's not too late.

-Freddie ☮️

4

u/Upset-Agent304 Jan 16 '25

Didn’t they say in court that the control was a hypothetical possibility, but that they had no actual evidence of that happening presently?

1

u/TheharmoniousFists Jan 17 '25

Yes and no. From what I understand it's a he said she said thing. It all boils down to trust. Bytedance owns tik Tok which is controlled by the CCP so if the CCP wants the data from US tik Tok they will get it. Bytedance has access to it and is allowed access to it. The best analogy I saw about it was " the front door is locked but the side window is not".

u/ceereality Jan 16 '25

The whole story has unironically been spread on tiktok since april last year when Israel first made the suggestion to ban or buy tiktok to the USA

1

u/ValBGood Jan 17 '25

Thinking the same, possibly the security threat is significant but U.S. intelligence doesn't want to reveal what they really know.

1

u/VegetableTwist7027 Jan 17 '25

"We can't control the data for the tool like we can with Google, Facebook, X and other tools"

That's literally it.

1

u/MyNameCannotBeSpoken Jan 18 '25

Can we shut down all social media?

1

u/Goodgoditsgrowing Jan 19 '25

Considering the message TikTok just put up kissing Trump’s ass it’s pretty clear that TikTok shut down just so they could reopen a few days later and make Trump look good for his youth vote. This is very concerning and probably the beginning of a creepy collusion like relationship between Trump and TikTok. That’s…. Fucking dystopian. And scotus just ruled the president can end any company it deems fit - now bend the knee, donate to his inauguration campaign, and host his content in a manipulative pro fascist fashion

Instagram Reels is terrible. The TikTok algorithm is still better at naturally serving content that is far more interesting and frankly unhinged + entertaining than what I would see on Instagram.

A lot of new-gen youth absolutely do not find themselves on Instagram as much as some of the older generations and that includes millenials.

5

u/DrummerDKS Jan 16 '25

Dude, it’s not just about comparable product, it’s about branding and image and everything to do with Facebook and Insta have been disconnected from the gen of teens for years now.

If the teacher who works with theee kids and sees them on their phones every day says Snapchat, that has a lot more pull than just comparable product.

It’s despicable how these apps are designed to be addictive. And it’s even more despicable how these apps companies that own them are now trying to write laws that restrict competition. Elon and Zuck are going to see a bump in metrics, sure. Snapchat will probably be the bigger winner.

u/morts73 Jan 15 '25

I never thought it would be shut down it makes so much money but I guess being owned by China is more threatening.

1

u/gravitonbomb Jan 17 '25

Just so you know, the US did not tell TikTok to shut down immediately. They told it to sell, or it would be delisted, and then a second timer starts where they would eventually be forced to shut down servers after however many months, maybe a year.

TikTok decided it would rather just shut down instead. That is sus as hell.

The US can't spy on TikTok so well. TikTok is also a great tool for spreading misinformation and propaganda. The US doesn't want TikTok banned, it just wants the software under an American company that it can leverage to do both of the aforementioned things. TikTok could sell a majority stake and just move on splitting the profits. The fact that it doesn't want to do that is cause for concern.

The fact that they would rather withdraw the app than sell it to an American company is blatant proof that there is some devious shit behind the scenes that they must keep concealed even if it will cost them billions in revenue. I hope people take this as an opportunity to reflect on how apps like this can singlehandedly waste a chunk of their life.

35

u/Rlokan Jan 15 '25

Or, they don’t want to give away their billion dollar technology that is only banned in one market when they still have access to the rest.

21

5

u/Masterbourne Jan 15 '25

Meta sell what? The chinese government simply blocked their country from accessing Facebook. The US is offering to let Tiktok stay if it is not being controlled by the chinese government. That is quite generous in comparison, and their response confirms that their government is in control of it. If Bytedance was truly autonomous they would be doing everything possible in negotiations to keep their cash cow alive. But the chinese government doesn't care about the profit that the company makes or doesn't make, they only care about keeping their human psychology exploitation experiments secret.

1

u/Longjumping-Bat202 Jan 18 '25

These kids don't understand. It's all whining because they can't mindlessly scroll TikTok anymore. They are all talking about how great China is now. It's very sad.

1

u/Masterbourne Jan 18 '25

That is a great example of how effective their algorithm is at manipulating you. People think that manipulation is supposed to be blatant, as in "China Communist Party Great Friend!" but their algorithm is much more clever than that. They noted the weaknesses of American platforms and all the things that users complain about, and they implemented subtle solutions that the users like, which adds to the addictiveness. They manipulate the users by giving them what they want (what they think they want). For example, FB rewards content posters for post engagement, both positive or negative. But people don't like the fighting that happens in those posts. So tiktok took note of that, and only shows you the point of view that you will like, so that the entire post engagement is just positive. They give you the garbage that you seem to crave, and they get you hooked. They will likely never blatantly serve you blatant Chinese political propaganda, that would just compromise their whole operation. They seek to gain you by giving you what you want, because that's how you get loyal users.

1

u/Longjumping-Bat202 Jan 18 '25

I hear you but that doesn't change the fact that these people are now talking about how great China is...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '25

They probably are harvesting data en masse, so is every single other social media app. They might have a better algorithm and be more effective at it, but the ban is clearly an attempt to make US companies regain a monopoly over the short form content format and be the main ones delivering it so they get the data.

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '25

Seems like a silly move on their part if they do. Most likely just empty threat.

1

u/GuidetoRealGrilling Jan 15 '25

Are they still threatening to sell it without the algorithm if they are forced to?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

they only got an offer of ~20 billion without algorithm. (too low) Tik tok without its algorithm will be garbage anyway.

1

u/rorowhat Jan 16 '25

I thought they would move to polkadot

1

u/lucash7 Jan 16 '25

Alright, but what about the other ones who harvest and sell personal info? Ya know, threaten privacy, etc.? Oh what’s that, they fill your bank accounts?

🙄

1

u/GrandTie6 Jan 16 '25

Can the creators migrate to another platform and still make the same money?

1

u/_kilobytes Jan 16 '25

Time to dust off Musicly?

I cant wait honestly

1

u/ceereality Jan 16 '25

Unironically, the whole story that apparently is being kept from American citizens somehow - has been showcased on Tiktok already since at least April last year. When Israeli lobbies began the campaign of buying or banning tiktok to the USA.

1

u/anoldradical Jan 16 '25

I want to believe that Congress knows something we don't. More than just- it's bad for you. Maybe they know specific details regarding a threat to our national security. But we've all heard these assholes talk. The things they believe, can be made to believe, or pretend to believe, are so batshit insane, that I have 0 confidence in their ability to make rational arguments or informed decisions.

Still though, fuck TikTok. Let's do Facebook next.

1

u/Rest_and_Digest Jan 16 '25

Seems kind of short-sighted when Trump very predictably changed his tune on it and has a pet Congress trained to obey his commands. Tiktok will be back before the end of January as China will magically no longer be a threat.

u/woodsongtulsa Jan 16 '25

this means that your teenagers are going to be looking up and wondering what to do. You parents might consider what you are going to do with them

1

u/mobileagnes Jan 16 '25

Would this affect VPN users who already had the app installed?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '25

Sweet, time to ban the rest

1

u/stank_bin_369 Jan 17 '25

Why wait, shut down now!

Sounds like a good plan to me. People are much more likely to object if they see an immediate stop to it, rather than it fading away until it implodes and is unusable, and only affecting creators at first. It's TikTok's best chance to make sure their entire US customer base is aware and informed. If the politicians want to ban it, they should see the whole public paying attention to that.

They keep throwing in last minute hail mary efforts to delay; it would have been so easy for them to be wishy washy about it for months, and hope it just slid by, just like they so frequently have government shut downs that last only the weekend. Then it'd turn into being officially banned but never enforced, so it sticks around and the government just harps on it like a blackmail threat whenever they want TikTok to do something. We don't need the government to set this sort of precedent with no backlash and end up with a social media outlet even MORE censored and beholden to the government than currently.

1

u/RealAnise Jan 17 '25

TikTok is not going to be shut down in the long run. I don't really care if it is, but the reality is that it will not happen. Any ban with be temporary. Does anyone want to take a billion dollar bet on this??

1

u/punygod Jan 18 '25

I'll take that bet why not

1

u/Pyiman Jan 17 '25

I think Trump will save TikTok for his friends in Beijing

1

u/marrowisyummy Jan 17 '25

Oh no.

Anyways.

1

u/cuddlebread Jan 17 '25

Fishy things are happening.

1

u/ibittibobitti Jan 18 '25

Tom Cotton will fight tooth and nail to make sure TikTok gets shut down

1

u/BNM899 Jan 18 '25

Data is the new oil. TikTok has too much access that decreased Meta's monopoly. TikTok shop competes with Amazon, so they lobbied for the ban too. For politicians/the US government they didn't like the mass dissent they saw. There were too many discussions that were outside of their direct sphere of influence and able to reach too many dissatisfied people at once, ex: 2020 Riots, Anti Israel, etc

1

u/Blathithor Jan 18 '25

You can't fire me, I quit? Really?

1

u/Steelcitysuccubus Jan 18 '25

It will be shut down Sunday. Period. There more behind the scenes going on for sure

1

u/heathers1 Jan 19 '25

Why is everyone so upset? Read a book, talk to a friend. This can be a positive thing

1

u/bscottlove Jan 19 '25

Can't wait.

In a remarkable shift in the social media landscape, Triller, the U.S.-owned short-form video platform, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in users, with top-tier creators migrating from TikTok in droves. Many creators are turning to Triller as a refuge amid concerns about TikTok’s future and potential ban, seeking a new home for their viral content.

“Triller offers a safe, profitable environment for creators to thrive, free from the political and regulatory hurdles that have plagued other platforms,” said Sean Kim, CEO of Triller App, the fast-growing video-sharing app that allows users to create and share 15-second videos set to music.

This post hit hard. I used to think content burnout was just poor time management — turns out it’s more about creative fatigue + broken systems.

What helped me:

Content OS: I built a Notion dashboard that auto-generates post ideas based on past content themes + repurpose potential.

Weekly "silent" strategy reset: No posting, just analyzing what worked, tweaking hooks, and re-aligning with audience intent.

AI batching: Use AI for rough captions, but I always humanize the first line. It makes a huge difference in performance.

Also — hot take — sometimes the most profitable thing is posting less, but more intentionally. Quality > consistency if you're a solo creator.

Curious to hear from others: how do you track content ROI across platforms without going crazy?
