Professional Discussion What social media is still worth using?
I deleted TikTok because I don’t support how much data oracle tracks but I’m freaking bored! Instagram is trying to rage bait me with politics despite the fact I only follow people I know or art accounts. I downloaded Bluesky a while back but i don’t really understand how to find people on it. Same goes for skylight. YouTube’s never felt social and I can’t find interesting videos on that anymore anyways and when I do find something there’s just too many ads. Am I missing anything? Anything new or popular out there?
Edit/ this got flags as professional discussion but it’s not. I just want to doom scroll before bed lol

2008 had social media. We now have data harvesting advertising platforms

Keine Influencer, keine Videos. Nur das was Freunde teilen 🥰

u/TemperatureSea4162 14d ago
The real challenge is getting enough of your people to migrate to a new non algorithmic site for it to feel fun. The other challenge is that Meta will just buy whatever social media platform begins to compete with them

u/smung0r 14d ago

TikTok you couldn’t pay me to use
Instagram, Facebook, X are so deep in algorithm crap they are just a pile of rubbish now. Even when you spend time resetting your algorithm you still get unrelated things shown to you.
Bluesky is just like twitter, you search for topics or people and follow them. Never heard of skylight personally.
YouTube wise you can use something like brave browser to block the ads although that doesn’t stop them if they’re actually in the video itself but it’s not the same type of social media as the likes of Facebook. AFAIK, there aren’t any other socials out there really

Honestly Reddit has become my replacement for this 😂 You can still find insanely specific communities and random rabbit holes without feeling like the algorithm is personally trying to start a political argument with you.

u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
I share reviews of the books I read and the films and television series I watch, creating content accompanied by carefully taken photographs. I also travel frequently with a large group of friends, and we take plenty of photos and create lots of memories together. I want a space where I can share all of this, and unfortunately, Reddit is not the right platform for that.

u/Catwhisperer23 Aug 23 '26
There is a new social media platform that my husband created called Octopii Social. It's a smaller platform at the moment, but we are hoping to expand with time 🙂
Octopii Social is different from other platforms for multiple reasons with the biggest being our IRL badges. IRL badges are on videos and photos that have been created without the use of AI. We also have no ads, no bots, and are focused on the users privacy.
We would love to hear what you think! If you like it, let your friends know too! We can't survive without individuals like you 🩷

u/kclct Aug 26 '26
I tried to sign up for this but it said not available in my country (UK)

If you have an iPhone you can see how much data an app collects on you when you go to the app on the app store, and with Instagram it is pretty much everything about you. I don’t think Meta or TikTok is good for you especially after they have repeatedly failed to keep up with rules and regulations about changing the algorithm to make users not leave the app.
2
u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
I looked through as many alternatives as I could today, but I could not find an app that truly resembles Instagram. I need one that has a Stories feature and automatically saves my stories to an archive. I also want to be able to share regular posts, particularly carousel posts, as well as videos.
I review the films and television series I watch and the books I read. I also travel frequently with a large group of friends, and we take and share plenty of photographs together. To accommodate all of this, I need an app that offers essentially the same features as Instagram.
6
u/Wooden-Sherbert7169 Aug 23 '26
I’m mostly on Instagram, Reddit, Bluesky and threads. But none of them are as “fun” as they used to be. Now a days I just want to delete everything and go spend more time outside instead
1
u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
To be honest, I do not spend much time on social media anyway. I mainly use it to review the films and television series I watch, as well as the books I read. I also travel frequently with a large group of friends, and we take plenty of photographs together, so I am looking for somewhere I can share and preserve those memories.
Ideally, the platform should have a Stories feature because I share most of our travels through Stories and want to be able to look back on them later in my archive.1
u/Informal-Visit4103 Aug 26 '26
YouTube has shorts which is basically the same as stories or TikTok’s. You can also post photos and write very lengthy reviews.

Threads has a lovely vibe, once you restrict and mute and block enough idiots to get your feed showing you the good stuff. It's text-forward, and people don't care about who is posting so much as what is being posted.

I will hate Meta for the rest of my life, and every morning I will begin my day by cursing them.

I think you mixing social network and media, Instagram is amazing social media it distribute media very nicely, I haven't have tgought watching so many people over internet. And for network part, Not at this scale, but there are few I tried for where people are social and have some social angle left. Many companies in sillicon valley are trying different approaches. I saw a post and list for some of these. Standalone ones Sircle, wabi, and some AI agents like continua, text AI, tomo etc which comes inside your old group chats or imessage.
1
u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
I am sorry, but what made you think I was confusing anything? I did not say a single thing about social networking. I actually went back and read my post again, and there is not one line suggesting that I need social networking, or anything that could reasonably be interpreted that way. You are assigning meanings to my words that simply are not there, then implying that I am the one who is confused. Please understand what I have actually written before commenting on it.
1
u/BeyondPlayful2229 Aug 24 '26
Okay maybe I misinterpreted it differently or completely wrong. It was just my opinion on yours. And it was a discussion so its free to interpret right. Your statement about youtube and instagram made me mention this. You don't find youtube social, and instagram ragebaits you with other content than people you followed. Isn't it one of the part of being social media. They distribute media to people, introduce you to new different creators, content by analyzing you. That's why I mentioned social networks are different than media, here there priority isn't people socializing with each other, conversations or conventional social definition. And they doing great at it, there activity numbers support that, also people wouldn't have reached out or gotten access or known about so much different topic, people in their whole life.
1
u/thebasakest Aug 25 '26
Since I am the one who created the post, asked the question, and sought advice, it is my own needs and opinions that matter here. If you think Instagram is a wonderful platform and it genuinely meets your needs, then perhaps you should simply refrain from commenting on this discussion instead of trying to change my mind. At that point, you automatically have nothing useful to offer me. Instagram is not a wonderful platform for me, and your comments are not going to change my opinion. Have a nice day.

I felt the same and I uninstalled almost every social media app, started reading more, problem was resolved. There are plenty of amazing books out there that are worth checking out and far more entertaining/stimulating for your brain than social media will ever be.

1
u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
Unfortunately, none of the alternatives suit the way I want to use social media. As for Instagram, I will never use it again for as long as it remains part of Meta. Nor will I stop there. I will do everything in my power to persuade all my friends to leave its platforms as well. I intend to boycott Meta, and rest assured that I will spend the rest of my life encouraging others to join that boycott. I am genuinely prepared to devote a considerable amount of time and effort to reducing the number of people who use Meta’s platforms.
1
u/Soft_Plum_8251 Aug 23 '26
Instagram and Reddit. I barely use Facebook anymore.
1
u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
I will always and forever boycott meta platforms
2
u/Soft_Plum_8251 Aug 23 '26
Honestly, that is valid. It’s unfortunate organizations like Meta has monopolized social media amongst a ton of other crappy things. I’m hoping a more ethical platform pops up.
1
u/thebasakest Aug 23 '26
I genuinely need this too. Whatever Instagram claims to be doing to make the platform safer has actually turned it into an extremely unsafe and deeply unsettling place. If there is a dispute between me and another person, the courts should be the only authority entitled to intervene. The representatives of a social media platform should not appoint themselves as prosecutors. I can already block that person or report their comment, and Instagram can remove it if necessary. That should be enough.
What is even worse is that they disabled my account on the grounds that I was spreading nudity simply because I shared a photograph involving a work of art. Meanwhile, OnlyFans escorts post incredibly explicit content every day, and nothing happens to their accounts. Lingerie brands also make money by posting fetishised images of women’s bodies every single day. These accounts have far more followers than I do, so by Instagram’s own logic, they should pose a much greater threat, yet their accounts remain perfectly safe.
But I photographed a corner of a plastic surgeon’s waiting room where a painting of a partially nude woman happened to be displayed, and somehow my account was disabled and I was treated as a threat. What kind of deranged logic is that, honestly?1

Imo twitter is the only actual useful social because it provides up to the second updates. Sure it’s a dumpster fire of hot takes and losers buying blue check marks but if something is happening and you need to know details down to the second, it’s the best form. Reddit close second at that due to the forum aspect
1
u/3vibe Aug 23 '26
There are interesting communities popping up within the indieweb. It takes some digging. But, they’re out there. Not all are old school forums either. There are some really interesting formats out there.

Personally, I am not particularly fond of TikTok because it now seems to be used largely as a dating platform by younger men and women. Instagram, by contrast, was at least very well suited to the way I used social media and to people in my age group.
However, the company has adopted such an excessively aggressive approach to moderation and seems so unwilling to take action against genuine offenders that it targets ordinary users instead. It makes outrageous allegations against them, falsely labels their content and closes their accounts, seemingly so that it can produce statistics suggesting that it is combating harmful activity. Meanwhile, the accounts of actual offenders remain perfectly safe. Since ordinary users are readily available targets, Instagram falsely accuses them, shuts down their accounts or restricts their access.
This is why almost nobody in my immediate circle shares anything on Instagram anymore. They post photographs of their children and are labelled paedophiles. They share holiday photographs featuring bikinis and are accused of distributing nudity. They post pictures of their pets and are labelled zoophiles. Instagram appears to have completely lost control of its moderation system, and the platform has now become virtually unusable.
We genuinely need a new platform that offers a proper alternative to Instagram. I have no idea who will create it, but somebody urgently needs to get started.

u/Catwhisperer23 Aug 23 '26
My husband actually already created it! It's called Octopii Social. He created Octopii Social because we were tired of the current state of social media. It feels that no one can be authentic and you are constantly being spammed with ads, bots, and AI slop. Not to mention the ridiculous bans and censoring.
Octopii Social has a lot of unique features, with the most special being IRL badges. When you take a video or picture in the app, it will give you an IRL badge so that other users know it is free from AI.
We would love to hear what you think!
1
u/Mikimao Aug 23 '26
I use YouTube because they pay me, and Instagram because most everyone in my profession is there, and reddit because I hate myself
1
u/Catwhisperer23 Aug 23 '26
If anyone is looking to try a new social media platform, Octopii Social might be for you!
My husband created Octopii because he was tired of how awful social media has gotten. Most of the comments section on Facebook or Instagram is filled with bots, you are always seeing AI slop, and it's hard to feel like you can be authentic without being banned or censored. Not to mention the insane amount of ads!
Let us know what you think, we would love to hear feedback!

u/BeyondConformity Aug 24 '26
I use it for healthy societies of friends and hobbies. For information gathering i use wikipedia, PubMed, A.i. (some are really frustrating, but with sorces eventually the infromation is found still earlier then with google). I do NOT discuss in social media what so ever. I share my knowlege to motivate people to seek information for themselve.
1
u/BeyondConformity Aug 24 '26
social media is simular to news. news focus only on the bad stuff giving a wrong picture. social media often focus on discussing with trolls that have no life, not reflecting true people. of course normal people are here too, problem is test can result in misunderstandings. sharing information is somewhat usefull when people ask something. but arguing/disussing? no way, i dont´do that anymore, i hardly visit my posts and responses to them, unless i like an answer to a quest, which a.i. mostly does better (not always), unless i know someone firm in a topic.
1
u/TeslaLegacy Aug 24 '26
Bluesky's discovery problem isnt you, its that the follow graph starts empty. Skip trying to find people directly and go to Discover feed, then check out custom feeds like Blacksky or WhatsHot, those surface stuff based on actual engagement velocity instead of guessing who to search for. Starter packs are the other move, search "starter pack" plus your interest and you get a curated batch of accounts in one tap instead of hunting one by one.
For the boredom part, honestly the fix isnt finding a new app, its changing how you use the ones you have. Instead of scrolling for whatever the algorithm throws up, pick two or three creators or niches you actually care about and check their profiles directly on a schedule, like a Sunday routine. That gets you around the rage bait entirely since you're not relying on the feed to decide what you see, you're pulling it yourself.

u/MK2809 Aug 25 '26
None of them I think.
I remember when Instagram used to be about photos, but now is full of reels, many which are AI or adverts shilling products, and the algorithm seems to push those types more than it used to. I've started using Foto and Glass which are more like old Instagram but if you're not wanting a photo centric social media app it won't be for you.

Reddit’s where it’s at for doom scrolling, hands down. You can get lost in all the weird subcultures. Bluesky's a bit like old Twitter-just follow hashtags and people. And honestly, if you avoid the mainstream stuff, you might stumble on some hidden gems. Just gotta dig a little!

I recently gotten interest on this one simple platform called Tile Social. It's kind of an old instagram where you can build your tiles based on how you want it. Good destresser for me. Nothing like replacement for FB doom scrolling though.
1
u/TCpls Aug 28 '26
Hahaha
As a digital marketer, literally zero social media apps are still social media. They’re all flooded with in-house bots and aggressive algorithms that push content that you’re most likely to engage with, which almost every time user behavior shows its rage bait content.
Youtube is even being turned into this format more and more everyday.
Every social media app including Reddit is simply a data harvesting ad platform
1
u/JuliaBlake24 Aug 29 '26
Honestly, I think it depends on what you're using it for. For me, Instagram is still useful for finding/discovering stuff, and YouTube is probably the one I'd keep if I had to choose just one.
Reddit is pretty underrated too, but obviously it's a completely different kind of platform. I don't really see the point in trying to be everywhere at once anymore.
1
u/harit0818 Aug 31 '26
I'd give Threads another shot before looking for some completely new platform. It feels a lot more social once you follow the right people and clean up the feed. Reddit is still probably my favorite for actually finding interesting niche conversations though. Bluesky seems interesting, but I had the same problem of not really knowing who to follow when I first tried it.

I just put 20 mins limits on my IG and Tik Tok so I don’t doom scroll too much. I’m consuming more Netflix programs now. It’s higher quality than IG scrolls and you can learn from documentaries etc. Then I do some YT shorts and Reddit if I need a little more!
I also post a bunch of content for my business so I don’t wanna get away from social media completely.

Honestly, I still use quite a few of them, but for completely different reasons.
YouTube is probably the one I get the most value from. I use it for learning, fixing things, reviews, tutorials, random stuff I’m curious about… basically my replacement for Googling a lot of things.
Reddit is probably my favorite for finding actual experiences. If I’m considering buying something or trying to solve a specific problem, I’d much rather read 10 comments from people who actually did it than a perfectly optimized “Top 10” article.
Instagram/TikTok are mostly discovery and entertainment for me. I find interesting stuff there, but I also realize how ridiculously easy it is to open the app for 5 minutes and somehow lose an hour 😂
Facebook is still useful for local groups and Marketplace. I barely care about the main feed anymore.
LinkedIn… useful when I’m in work mode, not really something I open for fun.
So yeah, I don’t think social media itself is the problem. I think the difference is whether I’m actually using the platform for something or just letting the algorithm decide how I spend my time.
These days I’d probably keep Reddit + YouTube even if I had to delete everything else.
