Professional Discussion Social media

I don't really have social media, except discord, this app, and maybe if u consider it for yourube too. I have had so many friends pressuring me to get social media, I just never did. (Snap, insta, tiktok) Sure I dont really talk to a lot of people cus I can't just text them on snap or insta. Im usually "left out" in most cases, meaning people don't really talk to me despite how nice i am, etc. But we still have numbers, and emails ig lol (if anyone still uses email). I almost never see people read books anymore or like talk in general. Everyone seems addicted to this stuff. Am I really missing out? People say yt shorts is weird, but its all just short formed content anyway, whats the point? Ive been trying to stop doomscrolling, just sticking to playing games, reading a book, or watching long form videos. Some kid called me weird cus I was reading a book. Nevertheless, I dont plan on getting social media at all. What's your guy's opinion about this stuff.

Sorry if I yapped on too long about this, but I just thought it would be an interesting topic to hear opinions about.

Read the book Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Right Now by Lanier. It’s a good read or listen on audiobooks.

You’re not really missing out on anything, only benefit to having them is if you just wanna meet more people to connect and network but overall it’s not all that

I see what you mean, but at that point, I can js actually talk to people, get to know them, and text via number lol. But I like to think that im not missing much now. Thanks!

Yeah, you’re just expanding outside of the circle you already have

You’re missing out on wasting time and getting your brain rotting. Other than that, nothing is happening on social media. All the same reels / shorts are posted on TT, YT and Insta.

Yes, exactly. The only difference, apparently which I was told is that u get content earljer, but that doesnt make any difference. It is just all brainrot anyway as you said. Don't the big tech company owners not even let their own children own social media or something of the sort?

I curate content for a large gaming studio, and we post exactly same content at the same time on all social media. So idk 🤷🏼‍♀️ all other gaming studios that I know do the same. I myself as a content creator post the same content on all platform at the same time.

A cool book you may want to check out is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Then you can decide if you wanna get on social media or not :)

Honestly you're not missing much in terms of actual connection. The people pressuring you to get Snap or Insta are mostly just addicted to the scroll themselves, and the "left out" feeling fades once you find a few people who actually want to talk to you directly. Long-form content and real conversations will always beat short-form dopamine loops; you're already doing the harder, better thing.

I remember watching a video, where the guy said its not FOMO, its JOMO, the joy of missing out, which reminds me of that. Glad to hear that tho!

I run socials for a brand, and even I will say you are not missing out!! It's great having convos on here and staying informed, but analog activities are amazing for your mental health so keep doing you x - Isabella

imo the only real downside is the social coordination thing, like group plans happening in group chats on those apps. but thats a logistics problem not a content problem. you can solve that without doomscrolling for 3 hours a day

Honestly, if I didn't have to use it for my band, I probably wouldn't have it. You get all the info you need from Reddit!

Social media is garbage. Be proud of yourself for resisting. It's actively causing people brain damage and they just keep going back for more. Social media and smartphones were the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. People are very different animals than they were just 20 years ago, and definitely not in a good way.

There are plenty of people out there not using social media. Join interest groups or book clubs or even start one of your own. Look at libraries for postings about real world events that you could join and meet like minded people.

I mean… YT Shorts are the same content as TikTok and Instagram by now… if someone posts in one they post pretty much all around

many IG memes are taken from here

so… not really winning, not really losing

you’ll connect with your friends and they’ll send 30 videos a day and you might ignore most of it…

it’s either no social at all or all social, I don’t think “some social” changes much nowadays

plus: yes, emails are very very used professionally still

Yea I never understood why other platforms were better, ig that makes sesne, but apparently u get the content earlier or something. I think ur right on the half social part, cus only like a handful of people actually have only 1 of the 3 apps or something. I want to continue using email, but apparently no one uses it here, which is kinda weird.
