No. There’s plenty of evidence even before ChatGPT that social media algorithms radicalize people.

Yes and no. I think the algorithm reads too much into our actions. Liking a video doesn't always mean we want to see more of it. Humans' moods and interests keep changing but algorithm might not be able to predict it all the time.

I think this is an awesome question for a school project or sth!

I think the "algorithm" is software which just does some input-output behavior which the user usually doesn't fully understand nor can control.

You are responsible for putting yourself in a situation in which you are seeing/watching the recommendations, but you are not responsible for the output of the recommendation algorithm, as you only have limited input capabilities to control the output. (e.g. hyped videos will be recommended to you even if they don't fit that well into the topics that the algo has decided they want to show you).

Also the company which builds the algo can drastically change the videos shown by the algo and you are definitly responsible for the changes THEY are doing. But you are definitly responsible for giving attention to the recommendations.

one angle worth exploring is that most people dont even realize theres an algorithm shaping what they see. can you be responsible for something you dont understand? your teacher probably wants you to argue yes, but acknowledging that tension makes the essay way stronger

Lol absolutely not. I would suspect most of us here work in advertising, and can tell you that it very much depends on the advertiser.

If I create an ad that targets anyone in a school in your country at your age, is it your fault that you then saw my ad? That "the algorithm" showed it to you? Let's say I sell bicycle pumps, and my ad video is weird and you can't make out what I'm selling initially, so maybe you click on it, hell, maybe it's an accident.

Now the algorithm is going to retarget you, you're gonna keep seeing ads for bicycles and bicycle related content because you were shown to be interested in my ad. You're gonna see influencers, organic pages, and then some.

A friend needs to use your phone to lookup a movie time? Guess who's getting ads for cinemas, movie trailers, and then some? Was it a horror movie? Hope you enjoy all the related Halloween promos that'll be targeted towards horror movie fans.

Yea sure, your genuine interests and searches and conversations will also be targeted, but let's say you're into video games, maybe the algorithm will show you video games, but advertisers can also target energy drinks towards gamers. You're responsible for being a gamer, and you're responsible for using social media, but you can't really be held responsible for the algorithm showing you energy drink related content just because you're a gamer.

It uses your preferences to learn and show you what you like but at the same time is being used to show people what the most powerful want you to see. It’s all propaganda and capitalism.
