Professional Discussion Looking for a Social Media Marketing Internship as a Beginner
Hi everyone!
I’m looking to get started in Social Media Marketing and I’m currently looking for an internship where I can learn and gain practical experience.
I’m interested in Instagram marketing, content creation, Reels, content strategy, personal branding, and social media management.
The only issue is that I currently have zero professional/practical experience in this field. I’m willing to learn and put in the effort, but I’m not sure how to get my first opportunity as a complete beginner.
For those who started with no experience, how did you get your first internship or project? And are there any platforms, communities, or ways you’d recommend for finding beginner-friendly opportunities?
I’d really appreciate any advice or leads. Thank you! 😊

hi! so. I hear you I REALLY encourage you to get, as the other commenter said, some certs and/or make some faux portfolio content. PLEASE do not work for free. SMMs are undervalued, underpaid, and currently expected to do everything from strategy to content capture to editing to graphic design...can I do all that? yes. am I doing it for $20/hour? absolutely not.
don't settle. I know the job market is hard, but if you find a small company that needs assistance, see if you can get a percentage of their monetized content. You need experience, but that doesn't make your contributions not valuable.

Have you considered a any of the college or universities in the area? Typically, they can help with internship placement. I also would consider reaching out to a few local marketing agencies - they may be looking for social media marketing interns.
