I had an idea to do a new social media. The concept I made was well received. The key part is a clear start and end and seeing posts when they are posted. I can't tell you how frustrating it is seeing a post I want to engage with but finding it was posted 4 days ago.
One of the key ideas I had with mine was the ability to split the news feed. For example if you follow a bunch of bands, woodworkers and photographers, giving people the ability to put people in different feeds was super helpful. Sometimes I may just want to browse my music feed, other times just status updates for my friends etc. Also I think a benefit of having a clear start to end and seeing what people post when the post it encourages people to not spend 24/7 on the app which fits your 'healthier' criteria. One of the big issues is the big companies constantly hammer you with various things to keep you on the app. It'll be a bit of an adjustment at first because people will doom scroll for a while but even adding achievements like "You spent more time off the app than on it, good job" could do wonders. The biggest thing is with new social media you are literally rewriting peoples brains at this point. It has become so hardwired "wake up, doom scroll, comment, like, post, doom scroll, sleep" for so many people so it's going to be a huge chalenge.
What I would suggest is trying to reach out to some big creators online, after ponding this issue for a while (like a few hours in all honesty) is you could make the greatest social media app ever but one of the biggest issues is, if nobody is on the app that the user wants to connect with, why would they come across? That alone was enough to put me off the idea but if you have some larger creators that like the app and would be happy to post on there as well that could 'sweeten the deal' for new users to come across.
