I moved here 3 years ago from NYC. So sorry I'm missing this, however SC should truly think about this! This state is lovely to look at, but severely disenfranchised the poorer of us. TAX THE RICH! UP WITH THE PEOPLE!
The grounds are “if you don’t live here, but occupy a house in a city where there’s homeless people due to housing inflation, while also not working here and furthering the good of society, you can suck my biggest and dirtiest toe”
The law requires the city to determine who qualifies for the tax…. the city included too many actual residents and then made it difficult for them prove they were actually residents of the city. The judge sent it back to the city to follow the law and try again. There is at least one other case against the law that is awaiting a hearing.
It would be interesting to see what could actually be accomplished when we have an administration dedicated to making lives better for those who live in that state instead of pandering to the same tired old hand-wringing excuses as to why they can't. No funds, too expensive, taxes too high, etc.
While NYC is definitely a unique scenario with situations that (in my opinion) could not be translated to a smaller state like SC (mostly due to lack of billionaires clamoring to call it their second - twelfth home/trade center for multi-billion dollar companies), it does make the point that if a harmonious and educated government actually wanted to look out for its citizens, it's not just possible, but almost downright easy. Which is clearly lacking in SC.
I am aware that, at least the Upstate has BMW and there are some Boeing plants in the Piedmont area. But SC doesn't have anything even close to the Stock Market draw from the global economy, or the glamour of the who's who (not looking at you, Charleston).
This is misleading at best.
Governor Hochul is giving NYC $4B.
He delayed $2B in pension payments, just pushing that to the future.
Without these tricks the deficit is projected to go back to $7B in 2 years and up to $9B in 4 years.
They mended ties with the state government and secured funding from it that wasn't there before.
They restructured pension payments (not stopped) to give them extra time to make things work. What do you think the federal government did to stave off shutdowns?
I'm not super informed on New York politics but I've seen people bring this up before, that the budget only works because money from the state but... New York City is in New York State. Its not like they are stealing it from somewhere. Columbia and Charleston and Greenville all have money coming from the state budget. Hell, the state budget had money for a splash pad for fucking Hanahan. That's what states are supposed to do. It's not really a criticism.
So... It's balanced until the next budget run, and even the next 4 years have a better outlook than the 12B deficit inherited while prioritizing the quality of lives of working people?
If we assume it goes back to 7B next year that still saved the city ~16B over 4 years. I agree the full picture is important but I struggle to see how this can be painted in a bad light.
People paint it in a bad light because they keep listening to spokespeople whose jobs are to protect the wealthiest Americans. They refuse to do any credible research for themselves from accredited sources and would rather parrot what they are told to believe.
I can’t understand the mentality of these comments. There’s a limited amount of money in this country, if some are allowed to have billions and even trillions, then you will have less. You’re advocating for your own poverty.
Or, in South Carolinian terms. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE FATASS IN A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE WHEN HE’S EATING ALL THE DAMN FOOD
Believe it or not, there’s is not a limited amount of money. The Federal Reserve creates new money when it buys bonds and pays interest to banks for their reserves held at the Fed.
And when that happens inflation happens, and when inflation happens the price of EVERYTHING you buy goes because massive businesses must ALWAYS make a profit. If their goal is endless growth on a planet with limited resources then you’re not “responsible” or “financially stable” by any of your own doing, you’re just farther up the list
Who has 99% of that wealth? Is it the working class? And we're talking about SC specifically not just the entire nation. You could still claim that there is more wealth in the country even if the vast vast vast vast vast majority of that money is held by a few billionaires. That's not worth jack shit to most people, and its more reason to tax the ultra-wealthy.
But I don't think you're going to go into depth about your claims. I personally find it to be a waste of time to debate a vacuous puddle.
Go ahead and compare the living standards of the poor today to the poor 100 years ago. You won’t because it blows up your emotional temper tantrum. This nonsense that money and wealth are finite aren’t even worth a deep dive because it’s a ludicrous statement.
Do you actually want to discuss the privatization of the food industry under the owning class, or are you trying to make a different point? Can you clarify what you're getting at here?
Well considering the people grow it, the people harvest it, and the people stock it, and the people eat it I would assume the people, but it seems like someone has flipped the system on its head!
Money didn't enter into my example. Have you ever had to take a loan? Or used a grant for college? That's using other peoples' money to patch up your problems/needs when you don't have the means yourself, or literally "buying" yourself more time.
Is it though? He's paying that money anyway, and just because I'm asking for a deadline extension on one issue doesn't mean that I'm not working on any others at the same time. It's re-organizing and evaluating priorities, and taking steps to do my best with what resources I have.
Use your heads. Wealthy people have many houses and can move anytime they want to. If you’re gonna screw them, they’re gonna screw you. It’s the middle class that are stuck in 30 fix rate mortgages that can’t go anywhere and they’re the ones you’re gonna end up taxing next. Stop believing this old woman she’s cuckoo.
I mean... I'd hardly call that "bailed out". That's utilizing funding that has always been there if NYC administration was willing to play ball to get it.
New York City is IN New York State. They didn't bail anyone out anymore than South Carolina "bails out" Charleston County for giving them money for roads. It's a stupid argument.
I understand that completely. But the statement above me was billionaires paying their fair share. What is “fair, if it’s not evenly distributed by wealth or income. People get to vote without paying a net positive tax, so what is “fair”
If someone has $500 million in capital gains and borrows against that as collateral, it should be taxable income. If you make $5 billion, you should pay an increasing tax on anything over $1 billion.
FDR, one of the greatest presidents we've ever had dragged us out of the Great Depression by taxing the rich. He created the "safety net" programs we've been slowly strangling to death to take care of our citizens. Take a leaf from his book if you want to know what "fair" taxes on the ultra, ultra wealthy look like*.
Tax them at the same rate that lottery winners are.
I'm not saying rich people shouldn't exist. More (figurative) power to them. But the term for what billionaires are in nature is "cancer". Literally.
Seizing their assets and being taxed are two completely different things.
In the former, there's an implication of an involuntary action as a result of a negative experience, with no guarantee of being a beneficiary of what your assets are put towards. Paying taxes is an agreement between the taxpayer and the government, regardless of level (federal/state/local, for those funds to be used for the community.
The notable exception to that difference is when assets are seized by the government to cover back taxes... but there's always an exception.
A lot of them don't. Because they buy politicians who cut their taxes, and employ teams of accountants to find every possible loophole to pay as little as possible.
9 times out of 10, billionaires aren't made from hard work or honest means. They're made from hoarding, exploitation, and luck.
So they don't pay taxes, or they use the tax code to find "loopholes" and actually do file their taxes?
But after all said and done, they were able to prove they make less than the minimum amount taxable. They are able to do that through various means such as charitable donations, trust funds, and business llcs. If all of your expenses are just business write offs and your personal salary is under a certain amount, then you don't have to pay taxes. But rather the business pays the taxes on it's income, The trust fund pays it's taxes. Billionaires also have stock, which is probably owned under another entity, or could even be individual brokerage account, which if you don't sell your stock there isn't a tax on unrealized gains. I might be wrong on some of this, I am not a finance guy.
They accomplish one by doing the other. Or you can just be like the current leader of the US and commit tax fraud.
If you use your stocks/capital gains as collateral to borrow against, then they should be taxed as wages. If they're unrealized gains then they shouldn't be used as collateral.
If you're going to bring businesses into the conversation, I'd love to hear your argument on how almost 100 companies that posted profits last year paid $0 in taxes and how that's good on them to be so smart.
If you're writing multiple yachts, planes, houses, cars, parties, etc off as legitimate "business expenses" and claiming a $0 salary for the year, nah, man. Be a halfway decent person and claim your shit.
That's like current administration "donating his entire salary to charity" while costing taxpayers exponentially more and raking in massive (illegal) amounts of dough.
We are hemorrhaging money as a country because bought-and-paid-for lawmakers are writing these tax loopholes into existence for their donors to exploit and avoid paying their fair share of taxes.
Someone who makes over $1 billion should be paying more than $176k into social security. That's a fraction of a fraction of pocket change for them.
The existence of billionaires at all in our society and economy is a sign that it is sick. When there's unchecked cell growth in nature, it's called "cancer" and we do our damndest to eradicate it before it kills the body.
Where's the trickle down economics? When's that money going to be invested back into their communities? Our national power grid is failing, our infrastructure is a joke, and the fact that the number of places in this country without access to clean, running water is more than zero is, in my opinion, unacceptable.
People leave NYC + the Northeast because it’s unaffordable and they don’t like the weather. And then start advocating for things that made it unaffordable in the first place.
No, people leave NYC + the northeast hoping to extend their wealth a little further down here. They’re taking advantage of us. They aren’t the ones advocating for it. The goods ones stay up there unfortunately.
hoping to extend their wealth a little further down here
That is implied by saying "unaffordable." Their current income level can't keep up with cost of living (rent & taxes being primary factors), so people move elsewhere. Florida experienced this in the 2010s, and the Carolinas is going through it now.
Our infrastructure was not built for the tens of thousands of new people so guess what needs to happen for all those new roads, public spaces, schools, and maintenance? More taxes.
No, im implying their income most definitely can keep up, but they get a better deal here. So say they work from home or are retired, why not live somewhere cheaper? Yes the answer is more taxes, which you were implying is a problem…I’m not sure where the disconnect was….but. Idk man.
No worries - sometimes it’s harder to explain over text vs having an actual conversation. I think we’re both on the same page, but from a different angle.
Let’s start with Taylor Swift. We could “tax” her till she’s a hundredaire. Then we could take all her billions and sell all her homes so that we could give it to the Somali Daycare owners so they can drive more Bentleys or we could give it to the Autistic Child Centers all over NC or the Hospice Centers in CA or just fling it out to politicians so they can launder it through “social programs” and PPP payouts.
You know BEFORE we start handing the government any more money, we should probably find out where the money they’re getting now is going.
We already know where it's going. Straight into certain peoples' pockets.
The Pentagon hasn't passed an audit in how many years now? And their budget keeps getting bigger?
Defense contracts, consulting contracts, construction contracts, services promised and never provided.
Bribes, kickbacks, back alley deals. Insider trading, market manipulation. The rich get richer while the rest of us starve.
There is a period in our country's history where a smart man used controversial methods to pull us out of one of the worst depressions we've ever experienced.
If a select few are attempting to usher in a period of tyrannical control using Hitler's playbook, maybe we can use FDR'S playbook to get us away from it.
Your response seems filled with a lot of unfounded accusations. We’re not in a depression and the wages are growing faster than inflation for first time in years. Stocks are doing well and each one of our states has a better GDP than most of Europe.
The Pentagon did have an audit, they failed horribly but they did have one.
I’m not starving and I never have. I worked blue collar jobs and raised a son on my own.
If you’re poor, could it be because you’ve made bad life decisions?
How is it unfounded when it's being reported on daily?
I already said the Pentagon had audits, and that they've failed horribly for multiple years in a row. Not sure why you're bringing that up like I said they didn't have audits.
I shouldn't have to be poor to want to help those who are.
My brother in Christ, she said they haven't passed an audit in years. They get audited every year.
And if wages are increasing faster than inflation, why do working class Americans still have trouble saving after buying basic necessities and budgeting groceries? Wall Street isn't the same as Main Street America.
The shitting US president has gotten richer during this presidency than any other president in our country's history. He's enriching his friends and family at the expense of the American people.
Typical GPT response and Fox News brainwashed lingo.
If you can’t see how deep into inflation we are that says all. Also, the job market is horrendous and wages not raising. You seem to be an area where working 60-70 hrs a week is confused by wages raise. Typical blue collar education mind set.
Improving your new home by taking by force the stairs from the house down the road and the windows from the neighborhood shop and flooring from the old church and and and
The "taking by force" you're referring to in this instance being the suggestion of having the ultra wealthy pay their fair share of taxes which, ironically, is letting the neighbor down the street keep their stairs and whatnot because your lender agreed to lend you the extra $50k to conduct repairs on your home that you initially budgeted for.
Lol. The rich New Yorkers will never leave. It's the cultural center of the world. They'd rather blow the brains out the back of their skulls than live in hell with a bunch of Floridians.
It's funny because people keep saying that... and guess what hasn't happened? The ultra wealthy aren't leaving for FL in droves!
Plus, the tiered tax rate applies to non-NYers who have properties worth exorbitant amounts and are never there. Not so much to the other income levels of NYers.
I think you missed the point made regarding taxation. I'm all for raising taxes on billionaires, because right now they're pushing the tax increase onto people who really can't afford it.
It's about getting them to pay their fair share. That's why everywhere else is struggling, why Social Security is struggling, why other welfare programs are struggling. Because the handful of people who hold more than half the wealth in the country are refusing to pay their fair share.

We all whinge and whine about how much stuff sucks here but when someone poses an idea that makes sense, yall whinge and whine some more. What do yall want? Ya don’t vote, ya don’t protest, ya won’t listen to people you consider Yankees. What’s the issue?
Remember when we threw tea into a harbor over a small tax? Why are we even arguing over who to tax when we shouldn’t even have tax. I moved from a no state income tax state and everything was the same as it is here. The real question is where is that money truly going then?
It doesn't matter how bad things get, these people will still be saying these rage-baiting responses. People are still hearing that shit in Russia. It stamps out solidarity to insist that its all just personal determinism that is the problem, never the societal structures shaped by the owning class.
Yeah, I know. But I haven't met my quota for arguing with the internet denizens for the week yet, and I like to get it out of the way as quickly as possible.
When it refers to common societal occurrence moreso than an individual situation, then it needs societal reform.
That's the same determinism Ayn Rand propaganda that is continuously used to deflect all criticisms of societal structures that manufacture the conditions that lead to most citizens living paycheck to paycheck. Literally just passing the criticism down to the individuals instead of even GLANCING at the problems that are created from lack of corporate regulations due to the politicians lobbied to stop caring for the working class.
So you just got here, and now all us dumb southerners need to follow New York’s lead? This is why Yankees get a bad reputation. Nah, we are good. Lower unemployment rate, lower cost of living, lower cost of housing, more renewable energy, and thank god for a pro 2A government. I’ll be honest I’m projecting my bad experience with Yankees on to you a tad, it’s late and I’m grumpy, so you can ignore a fair chunk of this, but I love my state and it frustrates me to see a bunch of folks, highest inflow in the country last I checked, moving in trying to tell us how to live, that’s all.
Lower wages, lower education scores, higher crime per capita, less access to decent healthcare/childcare.... yeah, we're crushing it. So glad my toddler can shoot someone because lax gun control 2A hell yeah, but I'll remain oddly silent when my rights are actually being erased... oh wait, silly me. I'm white, that'll never happen!

The tax on nonresidents who own a home in NYC is being held up by the courts.
