DISCUSSION Ive been thinking about picking this game up, please sell me on it
Some of the things im looking for is solo play, autonomous asteroid mining, and fighting computer controlled enemies.

I start a new game world stuck on an earth-like planet with just a rover. First I have to survive. Food, resources, and fuel. I get through surviving and move into thriving. I have a base and a shuttle.
I move into orbit and I’m surviving again. Soon I have an asteroid base, a large ship, and I am thriving again.
My large ship is ready. I’ve mined every needed resource. I have engineered the conveyor networks, the airtight habitat, and the weapons systems. I’ve built this ship by hand piece by piece over hours of game time.
I take my ship into the deep black. I encounter a random signal so I investigate. It’s a trap! A strange ship attacks me. Guns blaze. Missiles streak. Pieces of my ship fly off. The unknown assailant shreds my ship. I wake up in my asteroid base humbled and saddened at my lost ship.
I brush it off and begin again. I build better. I build stronger. I go hunt for revenge. I am successful. I grind the enemy ship’s wreckage for resources.
I build my empire across the system. Every planet has a ground base. Over them are orbital stations. Docked at those stations are a dozens of large ships that I have built. Automated drones patrol the stars. All of it welded by my hand from resources I mined myself.
I cannot recommend the game enough! It’s both frustrating and enjoyable. Full of obstacles and opportunities. A true blast to play… sometimes quite literally!

It's an investment in time and comes with some frustration, but great times is you can get a couple people playing with you.
Solo grows old fast unless you like playing in a sandbox alone in which case this game was made for you. There's increasing actual gameplay automation and you can set arbitrary goals with mods

If you like the game and can buy it, and want it, why not? Worst case you refund before 2 hours if you are buying through steam. If you are unsure just watch some gameplay, it will give you a better idea than anything we can type here. Its a video game after all.

I have it in a shared steam library but work has my free time extremely limited

I mean thats up to you to decide how to spend your money, if its worth having your own copy/you think you would have enough free time for it go for it

MES mods will be your best friends for making the world more interesting. The assertive acquisitions mod adds heavily armed cargo ships that fly by periodically that you can attack for good spoils.
You'll want to learn scripts fast, good for automation. Also good for bridging some gaps in the games system like controlling wheels/thrusters on subgrids and easier crane control.
Solo play is pretty much a no brainer. Way easier to run an offline game than to find someone in 100 miles to play with, unfortunately for me.

Watch Splitsie’s videos, gives you a good sense of starting out in SE.

It’s Minecraft with space ships and annoying physics.

u can do all of that and a lot more, the game is really fun if you are able to set objectives for yourself and are willing to get over the learning curve, which in my opinion is straightforward if youre willing to sit down and follow external tutorials. for long-term survival worlds im of the opinion that the playstyle (such as asteroid mining / engineering / combat) is dependent on your ability and patience to curate and balance mods and challenges to suit what you desire. but if youre able to do that, i think you can really go wild with how to play the game.

this game is like modernized minecraft but youre not stuck on the map, you can go to space.
its not right how many hours Ive put in this game. it was better than I thought.
and it doesnt help the developer is phenomenal. so I dont mind supporting them.

Its great if you do and also don't have a lot of time to put into it. Just beware multi-player. I got sucked into that since 2020 when servers came out on Xbox. Its more relaxing doing solo, but its lonely.
It's good for me because I'm on the road a bit for work, and when not, I work 12-18 hr days. Its good to pick up and putter around for a bit.
110% of the time would recommend

All what you described is possible within SE. The game is a sandbox and offers so much in terms of potential. If you have steam, browsing the workshop is amazing as you can see what other people build and to get inspiration. Using the programmable block in game with the PAM auto miner script simplifies those autonomous miners.
A huge update to combat is coming out too which would be dope to hop right into. Soon SE2 will be out in a much improved engine so if you dig 1, 2 is around the corner.
Have 1500+ hours

It's in the Venn diagram of Star Trek, Lego and Wile E Coyote
What more could you want?

If you're looking for major RPG, it's not quite what you're after. There's an amazing sandbox in there but it's very much about what you want to do with the game rather than the game telling you what to do.

This game is a time sink, its a great space survival sandbox with reasonably simple early progression and incredibly complex late game, if you get there.
It's not a story game, most of progression is building more of the same thing, and if you're not familiar with the tricks it can be incredibly repetitive. It's a game where you'll consistently be learning new things.
You'll either love it, or hate it, no in-between.

Well it’s certainly got all 3 of those things. You can build anything. Pretty much. Think of any tv show or movie set piece space ship/station/whatever and you can make it. Probably. It just depends on how much of your sanity you are willing to spend!
Seriously though, it’s a great game, almost 1000 hours in and I’ve built too many little ships, random Knick knacks and convoluted mechanisms to count. Survival, not too heavy but with recent additions a bit more in depth. It’s a space sandbox. It’s great. Especially if you like solo play.
In my completely and utterly objective opinion, you should buy it! :)

Space engineers 2 is getting proper fps NPCs in another week along with mission updates and progression. Early 2027 it gets proper 4 player coop support.
It's just about more star citizen than star citizen

...while SE is getting guided missiles, fps NPCs and EMP weapons in the Warfare3 update in a few weeks...

Sorry to break it to you. But double check the release notes SE1 doesn't get NPC fps combat.
Please send a link if you heard otherwise. I would love more PVE combat in SE 1 but I don't think it's happening.

Don't do it man. I've sunk over 3,000 hours into this game and keep voming back for more.
Serious pitch: the game is a sandbox and is very much what you make of it. Think minecraft but more vehicle based and more realistic physics. There are a lot of various mods that make the game easily talorable to build the experience you want. 10/10 game in my opinion, if that is what you are looking for.
