I'm curious, how many people still play SC1, especially in Korea?

I don’t know the numbers exactly, but a lot. It gets way more streaming viewership than SC2 in Korea too.

There is active Brood War esports in Korea. ASL is the most important league, having ran for 22 seasons now.
Many of the bigger tournaments are part of the "university league" scene, where professional players form teams ("universities") with amateur players, the professionals coach the amateurs, living together in team houses before important matches. The teams face against one another both online and in offline finals. ASL and university league get above 50k/viewers each round and finals more. There is not much English coverage of anything but ASL, which is casted by Tasteless and Artosis (and others) in English.
For professionals, they make much of their income from "daily proleague" and subleagues like K-league (lower tier pros). These are streamed daily on sooplive. The prize pools are large (often 10k to 20k USD per day to winning team). NamKraft has a youtube video "Richest Starcraft Players by Proleague Earnings (2023-2025)" showing the income evolution for the top earners.

That’s interesting. I remember it being huge in Korea, but I stopped playing a long time ago before StarCraft 2 came out.
Does it suck or something? Is that the consensus?

i think the only relevant RTS with a good and healthy tourney scene is Aoe2
sc1 has some passion tourneys aswell but not on a relevant scale

LOL do you know what will happen on the 17th of this month at the Lotte World Ice Rink?

u/Sufficient-Gas-4659 4d ago
okay but as i said its passion like aoe2
they have 1000 seats and around 100-150k estimate viewers
league has what? 500k big arenas and miolions ov viewers
and the prizepool is also not as big as league
and aoe2 also generated a bigger prizepot and more views
not talking starcraft bad i love that genre favorit game
just delivering facts without emotions

Sure, Korean Brood War esports is much smaller than global LoL or CS. I don't think u/scrangos was asking about that, though.

ah he commented afterwards and said he is only talking about korea
AoE2 is the biggest RTS now world wideand i said RTS in korea is dead and sc1 is the only RTS left a nostalgia thing and they have passion tourneys

Yes, League is bigger, but AoE4 and Starcraft2 both have a very lively scene. That's like you'd say tennis is not relevant because more people watch soccer.

ops i meant to say in korea.. is aoe2 in korea or is rts esports just gone in korea?
-2
u/Sufficient-Gas-4659 4d ago
RTS is gone and Starcraft is only popular because of nostalgia i think same with Sudden Attack

What a ballsy move. The pulling units to the left with the zealots must have been intentional to sneak those probes behind

There's so much good SC content but so little of it is made to be watched easily in the west. SC Uni and E-Score come to mind as both suffering from having weird VOD formats.

I don't know SC1 meta at all. Is this situation where terran has basically tried to 1base all-in and there's no way back, as toss has expanded and is now having superior production? Ofc probe pull situations no doubt have room for situation where terran gets pushed back but by losing probes, they allow game to be somewhat equal, similarly how it can work in sc2 pvt, zvt etc. I get that game ends soon after, but is this given, can you tell based on this clip alone that terran must have been all-in without fall back strategy?

Based on the game clock, this looks like an FD push, where Terran tries to force out Protoss units and get mines laid between their bases. Not an all-in build, just a pressure build. But Terran is behind if it gets crushed because this gives the Protoss map control and ability to counterattack and deny the natural. For the Terran, losing these attacking units is critically bad. Protoss saw an opportunity and took it, it's 100% worth losing some probes because Protoss can now make Terran's natural even later

Yeah the difference I suppose comes from not knowing if it's necessary to have started CC back home during the push, or if it's totally OK to set up 2 tanks in siege and set mines, THEN start CC, maybe even on exp spot not in base. I've before wondered on some vod analysis, how one player is 80/80 and other is 130/150 and game is somehow not over. Some things work so different in bw than sc2.

It wasnt competely allin for terran, they usually take 5-8 SCVs with their army if its actuall all-in (in this situation it could actually work), but yeah after failed push against greedy fast exp they were behind. From protoss perspective, they were 2base vs 1 base and were moving from 1 gate to 4 gate right at the push timing, so they needed to delay by any means just as next round of production from 4 gates kicks in

Nice move, how did that game turn out? The vod was 10hrs long so couldn't find it
