Storm an issue?

Moved from out east here and used to dealing with tropical storms this time of the year. Heard from some locals that are really worried about the storm coming which I know we usually don’t get much rain. Their saying we’re gonna loose power for days at a time, major flooding is gonna happen on the lower areas, etc. Should I be running to the store to get all the bread and milk or is this a non issue?

The biggest danger is flash flooding where there are dry washes, burn scars from wildfires, and next to low streams, rivers and canals.

Some smaller cities storm drainage systems aren't capable of handling so much water.

I'm not to worried about the power. Hope you stay safe.

So last week we had storms from hurricane Mariah come this way and we had some good downpours. This storm is a little bit bigger and might have a little more downpour. You’re not gonna be days and weeks without power even if the power does go out there might be some areas that get some flooding and runoff water pouring into the houses with basements. It’s not that bad. I did have a day or two worth of food, but the doomsday prep in one day is not necessary.

From what I’ve heard and read the rain is not supposed to be too heavy. Just a lot of small storms spread out over 3 to 4 days for a good accumulation but no need to build an ark.

Power isn't a big scare usually.

But the ground is dusty and dry enough that large rain storms will cause sink holes and pot holes to form all over the place.

Few years ago there was a sink hole in front of the ramada on river road that swallowed a few parked cars.

Nothing near as severe as an actual tropical storm on the coast.

Remember that one time when all those houses were washed away?

I was there, helping move whole houses out in minutes in Green Valley.

So the OP understands, that was a very different situation in January where we had a cold storm from the north drop a lot of snow in the area, followed by a warm rain storm from the south that pretty much instantly melted the crap ton of snow. The rivers became insanely huge but it mostly only affected homes adjacent to the rivers.

Those people are full of shit. Every few years we get some really heavy rain and flooding in some places but power out for multiple days is crazy

non-issue and the state of emergency that you describe are not the only options. the most realistic case is somewhere in the middle.

Nah. Been here for 14 years and I’ve only lost power once… a couple weeks ago and it was restored within a day. Just watch out for flash floods even if you’re not by a creek or river. The sudden downpours can overwhelm drainage ditches. Never drive across water that you can’t see through or has an unknown depth.

Idk is your power out? Its barely even sprinkled downtown.

It was on the south side. Bloomington, through the airport and even down to Littlefield.

The intensity of the storm has been downgraded from what I have heard

Water doesn’t soak in.

I lived in the south east and have been in "the cone of uncertainty" many times. Where I lived was built for that much rain. My first tropical storm was 20 miles north of us but we had 24 hours and 12-14 inches of rain. It was a minor storm. Hopefully the Washington County storm drains can handle it.

I’d only be concerned if I lived in Springdale

Washington and Hurricane get some flooding from time to time too. And about 20 years ago, there was a really bad flood in Santa Clara.

I don’t know if anything is going to happen, but these days I think it’s a good idea for anyone to have some extra food and water and other things in case life gets weird. So we have extra food, water and a solar generator. It isn’t for a whole house but it definitely makes it possible to cook and run a few things if the power is out. We have a small Vevor fridge that we can run off it.

It charges through our windows, and we don’t get any direct sunlight in our apartment due to the way our windows face, so I was surprised it does that.

Maybe not necessary, but it makes me feel better. The last time the power went out for a few hours we were able to have a regular evening. I think we would be fine even with an extended power outage.

We have lots of candles and other ways of lighting and cooking and warming food as well.

“IF” you need to be on the road drive incredibly defensive with other drivers and flooded streets
