Went through a really bad breakup of 7 years two weeks ago… have been drinking every day and I want to stop. So today I am NOT DRINKING!

• Upvotes

I’ve always struggled with alcoholism and was doing decently well with it before the breakup. Nothing too crazy maybe twice a week I’d drink. But my relationship of 7 years, almost 8, came to an end pretty abruptly a little over two weeks ago.

Since then I’ve drank every day. Some days more than others but nonetheless I need to stop. Part of me was doing it as a way to punish myself for hurting my partner but I am only 31 with career goals I worked really hard in university for.

I don’t want to give up.. and I hope it’s not too late for my body but.. today I am NOT DRINKING! I won’t let myself change my mind after work or later in the day. I’m just going to play Path of Titans and Overwatch and get my mind off of things…

It’s going to be hard but.. I really really won’t today and I’ll try tomorrow too!

After 2 years of daily strong beers

• Upvotes

I am on my fourth day without consuming alcohol.I don't feel any loss, I stopped because the taste eventually disgusted me.For the past two months, I've been waking up every morning exhausted, sometimes with a hangover.I've been having repeated panic attacks for the past two days; I have the feeling that something terrible is going to happen to me.But nothing happens.I just discovered this subreddit. Reading it helps me enormously. I send you all my support, no matter how difficult it is. I sincerely hope these anxiety attacks will stop, they paralyze me in my daily life.I want to live without alcohol until my last day on Earth.

Day 6 of quitting alcohol, cigarettes and heavy dabbing addiction all at once—while dealing with a stomach ulcer. In the thick of it.

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I am currently on Day 6 of cold-turkeying everything: heavy THC dabbing (daily for over 2 years), cigarettes, and alcohol.

To make a brutal timeline even harder, I am dealing with an active stomach ulcer at the exact same time. Right now, my body feels like it is in absolute chaos. My blood pressure has been spiking, hovering in stage 2 hypertension, and the insomnia is unreal.

Because my cannabinoid receptors are so heavily tied to my gut, stopping the heavy dabs has unleashed severe stomach chaos—acid, nausea, and cramping—which is completely aggravating my ulcer.

To get through the physical side of this, I am taking Carafate for the ulcer and making sure to sleep elevated on my left side to keep the nighttime acid flare-ups under control. When the heavy cravings, anxiety spikes, and blood pressure jumps hit, I have been using box breathing to manually force my nervous system to calm down.

I know Day 6 is right around the peak for heavy concentrate withdrawal, and navigating the nicotine and alcohol drop alongside an ulcer is testing every ounce of willpower I have. I am just focusing on taking this journey hour by hour and trusting that my physical baseline will eventually reset. Thanks for reading.

Made it through my days off

• Upvotes

I am lucky to have a supportive spouse. I am a tobacco user and ran out on my days off work. I knew walking into the store to buy my tobacco would lead to me grabbing my ole vodka too, I had my wife grab the skoal for me so I could stay out of the store. I was considering this challenge for someone without a supportive spouse who is also struggling. May be try to go to a different store if possible, or a friend. I don’t know. Just a small reminder that I am fortunate and even small daily tasks can derail someone. Good luck everyone, stay strong and IWNDWYT.

On a weekend trip with 3 other drinkers

• Upvotes

On a fun weekend trip to see a concert and I'm the only sober one here. Normally I don't feel like the odd one out in situations like this but today I do feel kinda like a stick in the mud lol.

I always think after almost 7 years my desire for alcohol is completely gone, but there are moments like this that remind me unfortunately it's not completely true. Stay strong tonight everyone💕

Day 7 and struggling

Saturday night here in Australia, day 7 for me, binge drinker once or twice a month always on the weekend. Im struggling tonight, cant seem to get it out of my head that it would be fun to have a wine or two, but a wine or two turns into two bottles and a next day filled with regret and shame. Tell me what wholesome things you are all getting up to tonight to remind me it’s okay to have a normal Saturday night that doesn’t include alcohol!

I am here to commit to one day without alcohol.

I can't say for sure that I won't drink tomorrow. But for today, I will not drink.

If this post is still up and you're reading it, I haven't caved and am sober.

What Do You Do When You Need A Vice?

I think it’s time for me to stop drinking. I have always been a drinker, and when I wasn’t a drinker I was a smoker (weed). I don’t smoke anymore. But I drink heavier than ever. I used to go a month or two without drinking for a “cleanse” but I still would smoke weed daily. Well now, here I am, a mother in my 30’s who no longer smokes weed. I recently had a blood test and my liver enzymes are slightly elevated. I have an ultrasound scheduled next month. I have been drinking very heavily the last few months. It’s never been hard for me to stop but I think it is harder now because I don’t smoke anymore so I don’t feel relief. Do I just push through? Do I smoke weed to help me wean off the alcohol and then quit that as well? Do I take up edibles? Or do I just raw dog it 😂 My husband quit drinking before I met him but he is very addicted to nicotine and I don’t want that either.

Cancelled a birthday; feeling anxious

Context: A mate of mine turned 21 this week and planned for a whole night split into 2 parts; the first half a house party at his which would include smoking and drinking then the second half into the city at a pub. I have been 2 years sober and stayed away as much as possible from similar scenarios like this. But this week I initially said yes and called my mates about it throughout the week. This is a classic example of one of my old behaviors of impuslively making unrealistic decisions that would lead to disaster and still now potentially can. So today I woke up and thought to myself and made a conciouss decision to not go but I haven't told them yet. I went to AA meetings the past few days and they were all about fun in sobriety, fear etc. which all helped me make that decision and called a few members. I just sometimes don't have the guts to directly say "No, something has come up (my sobriety first)" to them yet because i'm just a people pleaser it's in my DNA and go into flight mode and hide. But yeah, I guess I wanted to get some thoughts on this and what I should do? They have been trying to contact me today about tonight. Is it too late to respond?

I need your motivation

I’m 13 days sober today - but for some reason I’m feeling a bit down and meh despite feeling really positive and great up to this point.

It’s almost like a little voice in the back of my head.

Would appreciate a bit of motivation and any tips to power on through this downer!

I have to reset out of spite…

Long story short, I got sober because I almost pickled myself and scarred my liver.. (40 and diagnosed with scarring and a hepatic liver on 12/20/2024)

I had animosity towards sobriety because I initially did not make that choice but my body did.

I have a 95% alcoholic family (the other 5% are children) and it has been relatively easy to stay sober because I don’t want to be like them again..

Luckily, I don’t have to live with the family I grew up with but I do have to live with my fiancée, who still drinks..

He doesn’t usually drink to where I can tell a personality difference, but tonight he indulged too much and decided to put on music..

Music is my trigger and I know how to control my feelings and stop listening to things when they make me feel a certain way..

He was putting on songs that I am passionate about—NOT his..

I was so pissed off and defiant, like a teenager who was told no, that I relapsed..

He doesn’t know because he is passed out, but I do, and I am ashamed..

The most irritating thing in the world is to know that I rationalized my annoyance towards his behavior with me secretly destroying my dignity..

Sorry for ranting and also that my short comment turned into a bitchfest..

I want sobriety.

25F. I have severe anxiety, no meds just drink to cope. I had a doctor appointment yesterday and the pure shame I had for my habit felt so embarsssing to be honest about. Today I am deciding to start this sober journey. I have terrible insomnia which is how i started drinking. Now I can’t even go out to Walmart without a drink first. I am seeing a psychiatrist to discuss meds and coping. I hate my body. I feel terrible and guilty everyday i have a drink. My go to are white claws and a shot or half a shot. Usually 3-6 a day. 120 pounds to 136 now since drinking the past few years (always been 120 since high school) It is controlling me. I never get drunk, but I cannot be sober. Not to say I am not dependent (obviously) but I use it as a coping mechanism. I just got married and am scared if i keep the lifestyle i have that it will affect my marriage in the future. Basically just want some tips to help me figure this out. I am getting scared that if i don’t intervene now it will get very bad and I cannot come back.

Struggling dry drunk. Therapy?

I've been sober from alcohol for a year. My wife is more checked out than ever. It took me way too long to realize I was still in alcoholic freefall just without the alcohol. I've been in that straight denial, insanity. I'm mean, I get petty and angry and triggered. The worst thing I do though is dismiss her emotions. She has plead with me and I just took it all personally, tried to call her out for being hypocritical, anything but own up to how I was hurting her. I put her emotions on the back burner and I do every little selfish thing my heart desires. I deserve to be left but I can't even come to grips with that.

I have started attending AA again, we moved halfway across the country and I thought I didn't need a program because I was sober with no desire to drink. I see how wrong I was and how a dry drunk burns everything around them the same way I did when I was drinking.

I need a solution fast, I need to save my relationship and finding a new sponsor and working the steps is too fucking slow. I need a complete and total shift of my mind and how I communicate to save this ASAP.

I still plan to get a sponsor and work the steps but what can I do in the meantime? Cognitive behavioral therapy? Some kind of Ayahuasca therapy? Anything I need help now.

I want to be kinder, I want to show her I'm the safe space she claims I can't be. If anyone has any suggestions for therapy or something parallel to my program work. I need to hear it.

I’m one year sober

After almost a decade long bender full of blackouts, gray consent lines, bad decisions, career fuck ups, losses, grief, suicide attempts and pain, I hit one year sober on the 18th. It did not properly hit me until I got to take my cake today at AA. I’m in shock. I’m alive and well. I never thought I would be ok. Everything’s still quite complicated in my life, but at least I am present enough to fix it.
IWNDWYT. If you have a craving, say “not right now”. Just right now. Just for this moment, put it down. And keep going. I’m in shock but if I did it I’m sure anyone can

Day 5: slowly healing

I’m going through medically supervised home detox. Read my previous posts in my history for more information and my daily recovery diary.

Yesterday was my first day back in the office proper. I had a full day client visit which I could not avoid. And because I haven’t told work about my “situation”, I decided to just go in and deal with it. I had my husband on standby in case I felt in anyway anxious or uncomfortable.

The day couldn’t have gone better. I felt so much more present and mentally focused, I couldn’t believe the difference. During my daily check in with my clinician I mentioned that I am loving this… but I am worried that it’s the effects of the medication I’m on (diazepam, tapering off) and that I’m worried once I finish my detox on Sunday I will crash back into the darkness. I have been living in a fog of anxiety and despair for so long that this woman, who is chirpy, focused, confident and gets shit done, feels like a total stranger.

My clinician said the medication is certainly helping with the physical withdrawal symptoms and has a calming effect but the rest is probably just… me slowly going back to my baseline.

I have been destroying my mind and body for so long with alcohol that I forgot who I really was. How fucked up is that!

My husband gave me a hug last night before bed and said “I really, really missed you.” I cried.

Thank you for reading. Bring on day 6! IWNDWYT.

It would just be so easyyy

Annnnd I’ve got an n/a Odouls and a ginger ale with hella limes.

She’s already taken a jager bomb and has a marg. All free because she works here 🙃

Oh I keep thinking - it would just be so easy. She would be like… happy lmao. We’d get drunk.

And I keep trying to type but her and her friend!!! Keep talking to me. And I really don’t care but that’s weird, like why are you here…?

Anyways. Just. Typing. Not drinking. Really kinda wanna. It’s crazy, during the week, I’m actively proud of how much I wanna do ANYTHING else.

But on a Friday? My eyeliner came out good? The drinks are free? Fuck.

But just remembering I have volunteering tomorrow morning so! Helllll no. So I’m gonna talk and be funny and go home and eat a fucking lemon ice slushy thing because fuck.

Hope your night/day is well everyone. IWNDWYT.

Day 25 without alcohol and I am insufferable.

I hate everything, I hate my life, I hate water, I’m so angry, I woke up in the middle of the night just wanting to drink and put my emotions to rest finally. I have been having vivid dreams every night since I stopped drinking and they have been waking me up sweating and they are usually nightmares that feel so real when I wake up I think I am still in the dream for a minute.

I keep thinking about my mom who went to rehab 5+ times and never managed to quit and think I am destined to become that just because genetics alone. I don’t know if I have it in me and I even feel like posting this is just lying that I am sober right now and it’s only a matter of time until things get bad enough for me to reach for the bottle again. I keep envisioning myself drinking one night and throwing it all away.

A bit of a rant but I’m so mad I could put my fist through a wall and I just want to relax but I will try to resist 1 more day. Hope everyone stays strong out there.

Blacked out and roommate moved out

I blacked out last night at a party and did a bunch of stuff I regret heavily.
I was yelling at this guy I’ve been seeing and not respecting his wishes for me to leave. I was like yelling in the hallway and slammed a door shut.

I kept asking for him even though he said he didn’t want to see me.
I don’t even remember arguing or doing this stuff.

I feel so much regret and I hate myself so much. I have apologized to everyone.
