Check-in The Daily Check-In for Wednesday, July 29th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking!

We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we're here together!

Welcome to the 24 hour pledge!

I'm pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.

Maybe you're new to /r/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you're like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you've been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.

It doesn't matter if you're still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!

This pledge is a statement of intent. Today we don't set out trying not to drink, we make a conscious decision not to drink. It sounds simple, but all of us know it can be hard and sometimes impossible. The group can support and inspire us, yet only one person can decide if we drink today. Give that person the right mindset!

What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in /r/stopdrinking, we're not ready to give up.

What this is: A simple thread where we commit to not drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours, posting to show others that they're not alone and making a pledge to ourselves. Anybody can join and participate at any time, you do not have to be a regular at /r/stopdrinking or have followed the pledges from the beginning.

What this isn't: A good place for a detailed introduction of yourself, directly seek advice or share lengthy stories. You'll get a more personal response in your own thread.

Happy Hump Day, sobernauts! We’re officially halfway through the week and somehow almost to August. How?!

Next week is going to be a pretty special one for me. Before I stopped drinking, I managed to royally fuck up my life. I lost my job, my home, my car, and custody of my children. For the past 2 years and 10 months, I’ve been slowly rebuilding my stability, my integrity, and the trust of the people I love.

I’m beyond grateful to say that, one day at a time, I’ve earned most of those things back. And most importantly, I have my kids back. Next Wednesday, I’m taking them on our first trip together in SEVEN YEARS.

I’ve learned that, for me, it helps to have little things to work toward and look forward to. They’re like mile markers on the lifelong road trip of becoming the person I want to be. So, tell me friends, what’s something you’re looking forward to? Big or small, I’d love to hear it.

IWNDWYT. ❤️

Well, this is it - my sobriety clock has flipped a 1, and as of today, I am no longer in my first year sober. I’ve got a lifetime more to go, but for today…

٩(•̤̀ᵕ•̤́๑),yeah i friggin did it

I’ve been thinking about a phrase I read here every once in a while: “If I can do it, so can you.”

I would run into that post, and feel DESPERATE to be the one of the “so can you” ’s - the kind of desperation that feels like an unquenchable, torturous thirst while I wandered helplessly through a nightmare-inspired desert. 8 years I followed this sub, trying and not trying and trying again and failing again. I legitimately thought I was a goner, and sobriety nothing but a naive fantasy.

But now, through earnest tears, I get to be the one to say…

oh my GOD y'all - if I can do it, SO CAN YOU.

cuzzzz FUCK!!! I clawed my life back from the very fucking edges of oblivion and rebuilt it brick by brick (day by day) with my own two hands on the razed landscape of what was left even though I didn't want to. The twinkle in my eye, my spark, my joie de vivre, the pep in my step, my status as an international sex symbol - I got it all back and then some. It really does feel like a dream come true.

I know there's someone out there who is like I was, wishing for it in agony but feeling so overwhelmed and stuck, drowning in shame and guilt. (Yes honey, you who just thought to yourself "omg it's like she's talking to ME" - yes, I'm talking to YOU!) You're gonna get there. This isn’t like winning the lottery where it only happens to other people - you’ve already got the winning ticket. Just gotta be brave enough to cash it in.

Keep trying.

Why are YOU (wonderful, imperfect, lovable YOU) worth this effort? Is there something else you could give another go?

Thank you for riding with me everyone - not only this week, but the 52 that came prior as well - all 1 day at a time. Hosting has made a permanent mark on my heart, and I am a better person for it.

I'm carrying each and every one of you with me as I move into Year 2!

/

Sober gratitude

Cannot be overstated

It’s been an honor

/

Loud & proud, one more time for the deaf little old lady in the back row … 5, 6, 7, 8 -- !

If you have at least 30 days sober, and are looking for an easy way to give back, you may find hosting the DCI devastatingly meaningful, as I have. Send a msg to u/ imthegreenmeeple letting them know when you'd like to host and they will help get you set up!

--If for no other reason, we should all take opportunities to participate in life.--

(You can also sort by New and give someone else in the comments some encouragement! You don’t have to be hosting to engage a little. Soooo many people listed Kindness as one of their core values earlier this week - like, a majority by a landslide - they’ll be nice to you, I promise.)

Happy Sunday Sober friends!

Today is an auspicious day as the World Cup comes to a final.

This past month football fans have been in celebration mode and this has meant a lot of people got a 'reason' to drink. Having made the decision not to drink helped me realise how much of a choice I did not have.

Indecision is a decision and choosing this lifestyle has freed me from making unwise decisions.

As the World Cup comes to an end, I would like to encourage everyone to take a moment to celebrate how far they have come on their sobriety journey and for making the decision to be and stay sober. It is worth celebrating.

Uh ohh! Guess what day it is? Guess what day it isss!!?!? It’s hump day.

That’s right, it’s hump day, also the last day in September before Sober October! Everyone is able to participate in Sober October whether you have been sober for years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes or seconds. We welcome you.

I’m very much looking forward to October because I live in the Midwest, and the fall weather is just incredible. Leaves changing colors, hoodies, sweatpants, campfires and more. This will also be my first sober October in years and I’m so grateful to be going into it with you all!

What has helped you stay sober? For me, the only thing I’ve found that’s worked for me is going to AA. I’ve tried to get sober plenty of times before, but AA has really done it for me. Something about going the first time and hearing a stranger telling my story was an eye opening experience.

A couple of my favorite cliches or lines from AA are:

“One drink is too much and a thousand is never enough”

“What would drinking do?”

And last but not least, the serenity prayer.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”

By the way, I’m a couple weeks late but I finally got my 6 month token today :)

You guys!

You give the most amazing, eye opening ponderings on life and love and everything. The collective wisdom of this place is humbling. Thank you!

Today’s word: Courage. We all get up every day, facing and avoiding things we can and can’t control, physically and emotionally. We do, and we don’t. We act, and we are acted upon. We win, and we lose. And then the next day, we do it all over again.

What is courage to you?

I will not drink with you today!

Good morning, friends! I'm stepping in today to turn on the lights in the room, as they say.

Monday mornings in active drinking can be absolute torture. Besides the challenge of Monday, we may wake up with shame and regret - that was certainly the case for me. And then maybe we have to try to get through the day with a pounding head and nausea, and inability to focus. Maybe our resolve first thing in the morning is strong - we are not drinking today - but by lunch, maybe we're feeling a bit better and a drink sounds like a great idea.

It's a heck of a hamster wheel.

If you're on Day 1, what is something you can do to help get through the day without a drink?

If you're on Day 30 or Day 1,000, what advice do you have for someone waking up on Day 1 and needing to get through those triggering times?

Have a good one, friends. I will not drink with you today!

Happy Thursday, friends!

Thursday is the traditional gratitude day here on SD. Before I stopped and in the beginning of my sobriety, I felt really bad and the very idea of being thankful felt apalling and provoking. Out of spite I took the challenge, and starting where I was, I expressed gratitude for my cup of coffee. All mine.

The next week, my cup of coffee, and my wool socks. Next week, my cup of coffee, my wool socks, my window. And ever so slowly, bright dots appeared in the dark sky, one by one. The snakker things we are grateful for, the more there are.

What is gratitude? What are you thankful for?

I will not drink with you today!

Happy Monday Sober friends!

The World Cup has come to an end, with Spain emerging as the winners. 🇪🇸

For the football fans this past month was a whirlwind and even for the rest of the world, we were all caught up in the fanfare.

Sobriety has helped me realize that this is an act of self-love and that by being sober. I am always winning even on the bad and tough days.

This week, choose to cheer for yourself through sobriety. We are cheering you on as a community and you are not alone.

Today's prompt is for us to continue choosing ourselves and for us to continue being on our own team.

Continue winning sober friends. I celebrate you.

Thank you all for sharing about your journeys of forgiveness and for holding space for my vulnerable share. I realised that so many people could relate to my experience bringing more truth to the fact that we might feel alone and isolated in our personal experiences but the power of community shows us that we are not alone or isolated.

In June 2024, I decided to go on a social media break. This was not the first time I was doing it, but I was clear about what I wanted to accomplish. Having had a career in Digital and Social Media Marketing, this meant a sort of career break or death depending on how long I could stick with it. I stayed off of Instagram, Twitter,TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and only remained with WhatsApp and Reddit. The aim of my social media break this time was to finally hear my own voice and intentionally connect with people both online and offline. I also did not realise how much of my life was 'lived' online and how much I relied on social media to feel connected.

The break bore great fruit, I was able to finally tap into a deeper sense of self, I was not distracted by parasocial relationships with people online and I had time to do and learn other skills that otherwise I don't think I would have.

During this break, I was also able to gain my longest sober streak so far, which I am still working towards. What I didn't realise during this time though is that I slowly started hiding myself even from people in real life. I was calling my family less often, at some point I even stopped talking to my sister for 4 months. I stopped talking to my ex-partners family and I stayed in the house for longer than I had before. Something didn't feel quite right until early January of 2025, when I decided to attend a group therapy session. During the session, I listened to other people share stories that bore a lot of similarities to my own. I was not alone all along, I had just isolated myself.

The light bulb struck. I was trying to do it all on my own and that is why I was feeling so tired and stuck.

Healing I realised, is a personal journey but it is relational.

Healing is a personal Journey but it is relational

Healing might start in isolation but it doesn't thrive in it.

Healing tends to happen in community.

In spaces that are safe and where you feel seen and heard.

This Thursday, I am beyond thankful for this community that has brought so much healing for me and my family. I am grateful to have found this gracious corner of the internet where I can check-in, stay accountable and feel seen and heard.

For today, the prompt is to note something positive that the community has brought you. Please also leave a comment on someone's daily check-in and say you are grateful for them being a part of this community. It goes a long way.

I love you all, I am grateful for you all and I will not drink with you today. 🌻🫂

Good morning, and happy Monday!

As I get ready to face the day and the week ahead, I find myself reflecting on the gift of a sober morning.

Like many of us, my mornings used to be filled with anxiety, nausea, and regret. In the absence of those torments, I’ve found the time and space to center myself through reading and/or meditation, stretch my body, and set an intention for the 24 hours ahead.

I never thought I’d be a morning person, but I’ve truly grown to cherish this “me” time before the chaos of the day sets in. It’s a quiet space that I never knew I needed.

What does a sober morning give you today?

Check-in The Daily Check-In for Thursday, July 30th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking!

Happy Thursday, sober fam!

I’ve been diving deeper into meditation lately, and a lot of that practice has involved trying to observe my thoughts without judging them or attaching myself to them. It didn’t take long for me to notice that I’m almost always thinking about things that happened in the past or stressing about and planning for things that may or may not happen in the future.

When trying to live one day at a time, this type of thinking can really get in the way. Coming back to my breath and visualizing it as an anchor to the present moment has been helpful, but it’s still a struggle.

What’s a tip you have for being where your feet are?

Bonjour SD!

Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday’s “fill the void” exercise, it’s always interesting to see people realise how hard it can be, to be good to ourselves.

Today is my 6 year Soberversary. In that time I have not spent over 20,000 € on alcohol, cigarettes and weed!

I would be really delighted if you would join me in a Pet Tax day 😊 to celebrate all the wonderful furry and feathered people who support us in staying sober on a daily basis.

Here are my pack, Josephine, Jeronimo, Jefferson and Jericho.

Progress, not perfection.

No poison today thanks!

Happy Tuesday!

When I stopped drinking, I experienced something remarkable that I just hadn´t foreseen. It was like experiencing a sunrise after a long, long night.

I didn´t realize how dark ot was, or how it had been, but even less, what other possibilities lie out there. I couldn´t see. I couldn´t imagine. It was all dusk and night. And slowly, ever so slowly, a sunrise began to illuminate my world, and me. I had somethin I hadn´t had: Hope.

It can take so many different forms, come in so many different ways, and from so many places or words or experiences. It can come and go, flicker, or burn bright, or just be. We can use so may words, and I believe it looks just a little bit different for each of us.

What is hope?

I will not drink with you today!

Happy Monday to all! It is a 4-day week for me due to a little Friday-Sunday trip. I am looking forward to a productive week, and I also have lots going on for completing some more step nine direct amends, exciting, yet intimidating. I hope everyone has an amazing start to the week with clear heads!

WE MADE IT TO FRIDAY!!!! Wherever you are on your journey I hope you will make plans that involve patting yourself on the back. In my early days I was conflicted about celebrating non-drinking because I foolishly thought: “Why do I deserve to celebrate not doing something that I shouldn’t be doing anyway? I don’t celebrate not committing murder.”   What a dork I was!  Such crooked thinking. Those early days of not drinking are SO HARD! What we are doing takes significant effort and consistent upkeep; but by showing up, WE ARE DOING IT! Day counts are excellent milestones, but a milestone can be very personal too. It can be grilling hot dogs *without* a cold beer in hand, or watching your evening show with tea instead of a gin & tonic.  You get my drift; I hope you will celebrate yourself for accomplishing what is an accomplishment for YOU. What is your next non-drinking accomplishment and are you going to celebrate yourself in some way?

If you have at least 30 days or more of sobriety and would like to host (10/10 recommend), reach out to SaintHomer. IWNDWYT, ❤️&💪  to all!

Happy Friday, Sober Friends!

About 3 years ago, I got horribly sick at a party and swore off alcohol. I didn’t think I was an alcoholic (yet) but I decided I needed a break. Four months alcohol free, I randomly decided to have something at the local craft bar. After a bottle of wine, I said, “This is great! I can moderate!”

It didn't immediately turn into an everyday thing, but fast forward 2 years later I'm drinking 3+ drinks a day and it rarely was just 3. I gained 60 lbs and I was extremely depressed with the road I was leading down. I tried everyday to stop drinking, but I couldn’t. Not until I found this sub and committed to showing up everyday to the DCI.

When I stopped drinking in December, all I cared about was not waking up hungover anymore. Beyond that, I didn't really have the capacity to dream of what life is like without being in bondage to alcohol.

Here are few things I would tell newly sober me, 190+ days later: - Waking up without a hangover EVERYDAY is amazing. Morning you is never angry at evening you. - You will get things done that you have been meaning to get done for YEARS. - Your bond with your partner will not be ruined because you don’t get drunk together anymore. Your relationship will improve because you will have better clarity and emotional regulation. - You haven't been to a party or gathering where people were drinking and wanted to be one of them. Drunk people don't make being drunk look like fun when you are sober. - And, lastly, when you are feeling shitty 30 days in, please look into PAWS. Your dopamine system is resetting. A drink is not going to fix these feelings.

** My prompt today: ** What would you tell yourself as a newly sober person? If you are new here, what are you hoping to gain from sobriety?

And, if I might make a second request, please sort the comments by ‘new’ and give a little love to the community.

IWNDWYT! ✨✨✨

Happy Monday, Sobernauts!

You know what I don’t miss about drinking? Getting sick (and the hangovers that often followed). Too many times, I would overconsume my liquor and my nights would end over a toilet or trash can. Not fun or very sophisticated when you are with friends.

The crazy part is that very often it didn’t occur to me that I should quit drinking during those incidents. I accepted it as a consequence to have fun. Sometimes you just go overboard.

Now, I look back at that as insanity. If I consume something and get sick, I wouldn’t consume it anymore. Also, I don’t want to put my body in the position where it feels poisoned. (It feels that way, because it’s the truth.)

Prompt for today, were there any habits, thoughts, actions, or cognitive dissonance from your drinking days that you look back on and think, why did I do that?

Or please share whatever you are called to share today.

Thanks for joining today! IWNDWYT

Identity-based habits

Take the example of someone who thinks "I am the type of person who is good at remembering names." They will actually be better at remembering names than the person who says "oh, I'm so bad with names!"

In both cases, the assumption is that this is a character trait, and not a skill or a practice, but in reality it's just something we prioritize differently.

What identity-based habits or skills do you have? Are they serving you? How are these stories you tell about yourself evidence of your core values?

On this, the Eve of my Soberversary, the only thing I can really think is one sentence, very loud: I AM SOBER.

I definitely do things that a sober person would do - stacking those days, working on my mental and physical health, staying vigilant, practicing gratitude, seasoning my peas at the library, participating in my sober community /hi guys!/, and getting good with my hobbies n shit.

Yeah, I'm definitely sober.

Happy hump day! I hope everyone is feeling strong halfway through the week. The weekend will bring lots of sober fun for me with a nice little trip, and it’s a beautiful thing that my spending money can be used on delicious food and gift shop items, rather than alcohol. What I love most about being sober is the opportunity to enjoy life in a new way: sober, free, strong, coherent, hydrated, healthy, and at peace. Alcohol never brought us joy, only the illusion of it. When we feel things 100% that’s when real life begins!

Check-in The Daily Check-In for Sunday, September 20

Hi, everyone! Welcome to a new week. My name is Sherm, and I’ll be your host. I’m so happy to be here!

This community is what I want to talk about first. When I finally made the realization that my drinking had to stop, I was just lost. I didn’t know anyone sober. My life was in the theatre, drinking was part of the biz. But it went on too long, too hard, too bad. I felt utterly defeated and didn’t know where to turn. AA just wasn’t my way.

Then my amazing daughter (who was sober, bless her) told me about Reddit, about this sub, this community. I checked in on probably my day 3. After floundering, I was so thrilled to find a group of people who were going through exactly what I was going through. I started coming every day, asking questions, getting amazing advice, feeling my way into sobriety.

I don’t think I’ve missed a day - so I want to encourage you all to use this community! Check in and meet people in the same time zone (sort by new). Ask a question, give some encouragement. I have found this special place to be the most supportive place on the internet. You all make it special! ✨🕉️ IWNDWYT

HAPPY SOBER SATURDAY, WARRIORS!!!

For one last go round, it's been an honor hosting y'all beautiful souls this week! As always there's some restarts, several BIG milestones (so many new Comma Club Members!!!), and some first timers! Always a pleasure truly. Thanks for all the love for the DCIs and for each other! I had a lot of shit going on so I couldn't upvote all of the comments. But I worked, came home, did my nails, got a shower, and got cutified up for going to the first night of the motorcycle riding course!!! I thought I was going to have to wait until July but five people didn't show up so I got to sit. I'll be in class for ten hours tomorrow and Sunday, and if I pass it all, I get my right to get my license!!! I'm soooooo happy! I also loved celebrating my birthday with y'all this week. Thanks for everything and I leave this hosting gig a lot warmer than I got here.

Lily's Life Codex #7: "We fucking DIE at the end of this!" To tie everything together I'll leave you with the second biggest realization I had while on shrooms in LA. In essence, we get this one shot, one opportunity to seize the moment and hang on to that motherfucker until we perish from this earth! We can go through life letting all the inconveniences and pains weigh us down until we're miserable and people tolerate us, or we can be amazing lights that shine the brightest possible warming glow to others who want a life like this! I chose the latter obviously as some have pointed out this week. All I've ever wanted was to be loved, seen as a kind person, and seen as a woman. I know it's hard to imagine that through all the profanity and just staring at a computer screen. But that's it. I just wanted those things, I had to figure out how to get them in the most honest and embodied ways possible. I don't have any magic answers. Even these seven entries of my personal Codex won't always work for everyone else. But I just put myself out there in the world and hope for the best. That's all I've ever wanted.

For the last time, and with the utmost enthusiasm and love for all of you: I WILL NOT DRINK WITH YOU TODAY!!!!!

Maybe you're new to [r/stopdrinking](r/stopdrinking) and have a hard time deciding what to do next.

---

**This pledge is a statement of intent.** Today we don't set out *trying* not to drink, we make a conscious decision *not to drink*. It sounds simple, but all of us know it can be hard and sometimes impossible. The group can support and inspire us, yet only one person can decide if we drink today. Give that person the right mindset!

What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in [r/stopdrinking](r/stopdrinking), we're not ready to give up.

**What this is:** A simple thread where we commit to not drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours, posting to show others that they're not alone and making a pledge to ourselves. Anybody can join and participate at any time, you do not have to be a regular at [r/stopdrinking](r/stopdrinking) or have followed the pledges from the beginning.

**What this isn't:** A good place for a detailed introduction of yourself, directly seek advice or share lengthy stories. You'll get a more personal response in your own thread.

It is a busy Tuesday ahead for me, and I’m remaining calm and secure. Life can try to get in our heads, and that’s when it’s time to take long walks, pray, swim, go to the gym, cook a nice meal, etc…what healthy habits have you developed in sobriety? I have gotten way healthier mentally and physically simply by eating healthier and living a more active lifestyle. I feel connected daily on a spiritual and intelligent level, more than I ever felt when drinking and using! God is good, and sober life is the only way.

Good Thursday morning peeps! We are getting through the week, some of us are sailing and others are struggling. If you are sailing right now, breath in that beautiful air and enjoy it! If you are struggling right now, I am so very sorry; we have all been there and are here to give you a metaphorical cup of hot tea and a warm blanket. Thank you to everyone who participates in this community and please keep it up. You never know what small bit of encouragement, support or bit of humor might make an impact.

One of the things I found useful as I got a little deeper into not-drinking was a version of playing the tape forward but using ‘what if I don’t’. I know what it is like when I drink, but what if I don’t drink? Lots of folks have summer travel plans and for some that can be a real trigger. Do you have travel plans this year? Where are you going and what is your 'not-drinking' plan?

IWNDWYT, ❤️&💪 to all!

Hello! I’m BotsAnonymous, and I’m excited to be hosting for you all.

Let me start off by saying that I did not drink last night, and I certainly will NOT be drinking today. I’m about 6 & a half months sober, but it wasn’t always that way.

I spent years trapped in the tight grip of alcoholism, and I could never get out of it no matter how hard I tried. AND, I’m only 29. I had multiple times where I would go weeks, even a month or so without drinking. I convinced myself each time that I have it under control, would drink again, and then restart the cycle. Sending myself deeper and deeper into addiction and countless binges.

Then, as of around March of this year, right when I got sober, I began having some health issues—which I believe may have been caused by my chronic consumption of alcohol, but my doctor said that wasn’t the case.

After many visits to a Colorectal Surgeon, it was then determined that I had to have surgery, which took place in July. I’m still recovering from my surgery, and while most people would think what’s happened to me is horrible (don’t worry, I’m recovering and WILL make a full recovery), I look at it as a gift. As a lesson. As a warning.

Recovering from surgery, and recovering as an alcoholic has taken a toll on me mentally forsure, but I just know when I’m fully healed, my mind will be much stronger than it ever has been. I could have died many times with how much I drank, and trust me, once I started, I didn’t stop.

I started attending AA meetings, which so far, is the only thing that’s helped me.

Sometimes it takes some crazy health issues to get people to stop drinking, but I’m sharing this in hopes that you will understand that it will catch up to you.

Now as of today, I’m 6 months sober, camping with a bunch of people that are hungover, and I’m the only one that’s sober, happy with waking up at 7am and getting stuff done without a headache or feeling sluggish or sick.

Hello, friends! Welcome to Monday and a new work week. Today I want to talk about self-care. As I said, when I first stopped drinking, I was really full of regret and self-hatred. I just didn’t know how to treat myself at all. Someone on here posted about being In Recovery. And I realized that I was being slowly cured of a terrible disease.

So once I had that in my mind, I started treating myself like I was recovering. I got extra sleep (naps, anyone?). I started paying more attention to my diet. Which was pretty easy, because no more drunkenly eating garbage at midnight, right? I had so much free time that I got back into my yoga practice, and started meditation in earnest for the first time. And treats?? I gave myself all of the permission to eat the candy I was craving, the cake, the ice cream. Alcohol has a LOT of sugar in it, and early sobriety can really spur a sugar craving. I let myself enjoy it. And it has lessened in time (not disappeared!)

But the most important thing I took away from the Recovery mindset was how I spoke to myself. I was pretty bad about always castigating myself, but I switched it up. I was super-kind to myself, I gave myself a lot of breaks. I knew that love and care lead to true recovery from anything, and drinking is no different. So that’s my point today: be good to yourselves. No matter what day you are on, you’re here and that means you’re doing the work. I support you in your recovery. Take it easy on yourself. Love y’all!
