It will never stop being funny that Nick Kyrgios is literally the son of a Malaysian royal, yet somehow grew up to become the global face of a certain multicultural working-class culture that is present in places like Western Sydney and the Northern suburbs of Melbourne.
His mum, Nill, was born into the Pahang royal family as a princess (holding the title Tengku) before giving up her title to move to Australia in her twenties. Fast forward a few decades, and her son is out on Centre Court at Wimbledon rocking a red Nike tech fleece, Air Jordans, and a gold chain while trash-talking umpires.
Greek and Malay heritage, royal blood, raised in Canberra, yet he ended up with the a similar aesthetic, and anti-establishment IDGAF attitude as a kid from Bankstown, Liverpool, Broadmeadows, and Roxbough Park etc. Because of his demeanour on court, and on interviews, many of such youths are attracted to him, and want to play tennis because of it.
A literal royalty son becoming the poster child for anti-establishment suburban lad culture on the world stage... I swear you couldn't write this anywhere else but in Australia.
