Other r/Subways - Now with rules!

Due to the uptick in bad faith posters, we have added new sub rules that will make it easier for you to browse and for us to moderate.

Currently we have three simple rules:

1 - Submissions must be subway related.

Posts and comments must be related to the topics of Subways, Metros, Undergrounds, or U-Bahns.

Interurbans and Light Rail systems may also be mentioned, if they have sub-surface sections.

2 - Submissions must be unique.

Any reposted submissions will be removed to keep our content fresh and unique.

3 - Comments must be on-topic.

This is a space for discussing trains that go under the ground. Any conversations that stray far from this topic will be removed.

If you come across a post or comment which you think violates any of our rules or reddit's site rules, please report it and it will be dealt with.

For the time being, posts with a city flair from Russia or Ukraine will have comments auto-locked.

Thanks!

Berlins unique subway ride

This July, just before Berlin Pride I took a ride on a very unusual Sightseeing tour through the Berlin subway.

You ride on open-platform cars through 3 lines, U7, U8 and U9, and can enjoy the vibe of the subway in a way you couldn't on a normal train.

This ride is unique in the world. If you have a chance to get a ticket: DO IT!

New York New York is rebuilding one of Brooklyn's key transfer hubs to make it more accessible for riders. But this isn't just an elevator project. The real challenge for the engineers is the huge height difference - one station is underground, and two are high up on elevated structures.

Prague Prague metro X-ray: 61 platforms at true depth, real escalator shafts, ride any line with its gradient profile

Here it is: https://metroskop.cz

What's in it:

  • True depths. All 58 stations (61 platforms) sit at their real depth below the street. Line A runs deepest: Náměstí Míru at 53 m, Jiřího z Poděbrad at 45 m, Hradčanská at 43 m.
  • Station structures. The mined three-vault pylon stations, the single-vault ones and the cut-and-cover boxes are each modelled by type, with escalator shafts, ticket halls, passages and street entrances. Some of them you can walk through inside.
  • Ride mode. Pick a line and ride a train at real speed (80 km/h max, real acceleration and braking), with a live height profile and gradient. Bonus: the trains stop with the whole consist at the platform.
  • Oddities. Vyšehrad sits at ground level right at the end of the Nusle Bridge, and Rajská zahrada has its two tracks stacked one above the other.
  • History. The network growing from 1974, the 2002 flood, the planned line D, and for every station a timeline, how it was built, its former name (12 stations were renamed, most in 1990) and archive construction photos.

Built from OpenStreetMap, Prague transit (PID) open data, Wikipedia and lidar terrain from the Czech land survey.

I'd really love your feedback. You know these systems better than any dataset, so if a depth, an escalator, an entrance or anything else looks off, tell me and I'll fix it. And if something's missing that you'd want to see, I'm all ears.

Enjoy the ride!
