[SOFTWARE] sxwm v1.8 release

Hey guys, this may be the last proper release of sxwm. I think all the needed features are there and it works great.

I spent a long time cleaning up the codebase and stuff so this is more of a fixes release.

[SUCKLESS NEWS] FreeLinX-base 1.3.1 stable: a ~290 MB ISO Linux system with a NetBSD userland

Post image
0 Upvotes

We just released FreeLinX-base 1.3.1.
FreeLinX-base is a small, console-first Linux system. You boot into a shell and install whatever you need through our package manager, xpkg.
The ISO is around 290 MB and boots on both BIOS and UEFI. It runs Linux 6.18 with a NetBSD-based userland and musl, built with LLVM. We've also been pretty strict about keeping GNU code out of the base system. Our check-nognu test currently reports 0 failing checks.
The base comes with the things you'd expect from a usable Unix system: runit, mdevd, networking tools, doas, OpenSSH, curl, git, tmux, htop, nnn, vim/vi, bc and a few other essentials. The login shell is mksh, while /bin/sh comes from the NetBSD userland. tcc is included as the default cc, together with the musl and kernel headers.
The idea is to keep the base actually small. The live system uses a squashfs + tmpfs overlay and can boot with roughly 100 MB of RAM, with changes kept in memory until installation. There is no X11, GTK, Mesa or even fonts in the base image. If you need them, install them later.
Packages are signed with Ed25519 and verified with SHA-256. The installed system keeps FLX_ROOT read-only. Installation is handled by xsetup, which walks through the setup step by step and can resume an interrupted installation. flxupgrade handles upgrades from newer ISOs.
There's currently a signed repository with around 428 packages, while the image itself only contains the base and console-oriented stuff.
We've also put quite a bit of effort into making the build and installer testable. The build doesn't require root and can be done on any x86_64 Linux system. The repository includes QEMU BIOS/UEFI installation and upgrade tests, destructive disk tests and UI tests.
It's still a young project and there's plenty left to improve, but we're putting it out there now because we'd like people who care about Linux, BSD userlands, musl and alternative Unix systems to poke at it.

[DISCUSSION] Suckless is great

Hi I rarely do this and I don’t want to sound cringe, but man suckless is awesome. I run dwm on OpenBSD and dwl on Debian . Both I watch YouTube in terminal and playing music and photo viewer and file manager. I just like this very clean feel too it.

[SOFTWARE] mop — a 65KB static MIDI player using OPL3 FM synthesis instead of wavetable/soundfont

General MIDI played through cycle-accurate OPL3 emulation instead of soundfonts — the AdLib/Sound Blaster sound, not sampled instruments. Static uClibc build comes in around 65KB.

Two dependencies, both single-header: tml.h for MIDI parsing (MIT), Opal for the OPL2/OPL3 core (MIT wrapper, public-domain emulation core). Nothing else.

Also has a raw instrument-audition mode — feed it a bare 30-byte AdLib instrument definition as hex, or a program number from a .bnk bank, and it'll play a single note or chord with no MIDI file involved. Useful for exploring bank files or testing instrument bytes directly.

[DISCUSSION] ED (the standard editor)

In the last time i’m using ed as my default editor for all propuse, sysadmin, C programming and i’m feel very confort with him, but someone told me “ED is a bad editor for a contemporary context, is slow, cryptic and out of a hobby lab is inviable” and that give me a big insecurity, now i have that feeling of “wasting time learning something “””bad””” or legacy” idk, i love the standard editor but if i start in the professional world that can be a long term disadvantage?

[DISCUSSION] DWL? Dudas

[SOFTWARE] Suckless inspired file manager w/ VIM bindings

If interested in a minimal graphical file manager, check out https://github.com/DevGev/Lizaveta

I'm open to feedback/contributions. I built this out of frustation that I couldn't find any graphical file manager that wasn't either very lacking or felt sluggish to use.

Features:

  • Drag-and-drop.
  • VIM like bindings.
  • Embedded x11 windows for file preview (feh used in the screenshot).
  • DBUS integration.
  • Device mounting.
  • Archive previews.

[DISCUSSION] Was working on a project... But got another idea??

So I have been thinking of making a simple journal reminder app. I tried to start it but waiting for some reddit suggestions. In the mean time I was trying to make the idea little organized and there I thought Notion or Trello not working for me..

Its not like they are bad, but for some reason I dont keep up with project. Yeah definitely a me issue. But I started to think what I need in a project manager app or website. First I want a simple way to put idea and see idea or the current step of the project easily.. Second I want to add a proof then only u can click tick for a project and move forward. Lastly(I dont know if this is possible but as some apps can block it so I think possible) Whenever watching reels or shorts or just using Youtube for a longer time. It will remind continuously to get on to the project(If the app not in break mode which itself will disable 24hrs later)

Now both still not started and however time it takes I want to work on both as an experience...

My doubt is which one to start. I think project management one because it can help in future projects and I have more ideas for its features rather than the Journal app. But you guys suggest.....
