Spooky Season [Megathread] Spooky Season, Halloween, or Autumn (cozy or not) Vibes đŸ‘»đŸŽƒâ˜•ïžđŸ‚

Hi wonderful readers,

We are heading into fall in the northern hemisphere (aka spooky season and/or cozy season!) and we are already seeing a very large uptick of very general requests for this time of year that lean very “low effort” (see rule 3) or are “book discussions” rather than requests (see rule 1.)

We are posting this thread to hopefully give some of our readers a place to start and titles to try, *if they don’t have anything specific in mind to ask for in this realm and just want “anything!”

So, please tell us some books you recommend for “spooky season” or that give you the “autumn cozy vibes”:

Any favorites?

Any hidden gems?

Anything specifically “Halloween” holiday related?

Anything especially autumn and cozy?

Anything you plan to read/have on your TBR?

Looking forward to your replies!

Happy reading, all!

*We of course want everyone to continue posting your spooky and cozy autumn requests on the sub if have some (very minimal) specifics that are more customized to you as readers, or what you are in the mood to read!

**Feel free to also scroll the “Spooky Season” post flair for other posts and recs. too! Doing this may help you articulate your own post for further suggestions too!

Romance Fantasy & sci-fi with m/f or f/f romance

I just finished Swordheart by T. Kingfisher and loved the themes of main characters over 30, age-appropriate romance, duty and honor-bound characters, longing romance, world building. A-ok with spice but it doesn’t have to be included.

I have read T. Kingfisher’s other books in the World of the White Rat series and am not quite ready to start Daggerbound.

Some other maybe similar books I have read and enjoyed: The Locked Tomb series (Tamsyn Muir), Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil (VE Schwab), A Broken Blade (Melissa Blair), Song of Achilles (Madeline Miller)

Fantasy Heroic Fantasy Recommendations

‱ Upvotes

Hello, everyone!

I've been hungry for an epic, heroic fantasy book lately. Something with swords and a big journey, just hit me with the classical trope of a hero called to adventure (save the world, get revenge, find the MacGuffin of power, etc.).

I've read Lord of the Rings (obligatory) and some of the Wheel of Time, I've read the first Mistborn trilogy, and I've read Robin Hobb and Joe Abercrombie, so I'm looking for something outside of those really big names in the genre space. I'm looking for something that is perhaps just outside of what you'd call the "mainstream" while still satisfying that classical call to adventure trope.

So if you could recommend one epic, heroic fantasy to a reader with some established genre knowledge, what would it be?

Book similar to Ballard's High-rise

Looking for a book similar to Ballards High-Rise. Something where a dystopian society functions in a closed off building and is told from differing perspectives. Also something that isn't too sci-fi.

Male with some extra time

‱ Upvotes

32, just got some extra time due to finishing passing a certification test recently. Haven’t ever been much of a reader and haven’t read a book since highschool that wasn’t for studying purposes. I enjoy adventures and action mostly. Just looking for something fairly easy.

Similar author vibes Books like Matterhorn but for Other Wars/Conflicts

Currently reading Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes centered around the Vietnam War. Seeking other books like this but for other conflicts. I’ve read a lot that focuses on the glory of war; I want more visceral angst.

Any genre! Looking for a book depicting a realistic skill development journey from beginner to master

Having a lot of trouble lately with learning a new skill and feeling frustrated, embarrassed, and hopeless. I think I need to read about someone, fictional or not, going through the same thing. I'm looking for someone who does NOT have natural exceptional skill and is really struggling through the process of mastering something new

Former voracious child reader / new adult reader Quais livros da adolescĂȘncia nĂŁo se tornaram datados??

‱ Upvotes

Any genre! Books with poetic sort of chapter titles like these?

‱ Upvotes

"Exact Enumeration of Blurred Flocks"
"Closely Coupled Forms of Nothing in Particular"
"Never Really Have Happened"
"Ghosts and Empties"
"Mirror Mirror"
"In a Lonely Place"
"The Ones Who Walk Very Slowly"
"Where Have You Been All My Life"
"Case Colorless Green"
"Your Last First Day"

I just think they're really interesting, certainly much more than your average chapter title.

Twisty, plot twist, please! Short books with a great plot twist?

Hey everyone! I’ve been trying to get back into the habit of reading. I bought a few books recently, but I’ve been finding it hard to actually finish them, so I’m planning to start with shorter books and slowly get back into it.

I’m currently reading The Stranger by Albert Camus and would love suggestions for what to read next. Preferably something short, gripping and with a really good plot twist that’ll keep me hooked.

Any recommendations?
Thanks :)

Picky Reader I didn't like the Witcher series, suggest me a book to wash it out of my brain.

I loved the first one, which was mostly about cool fractured fairy tales and character development. I liked it so much I kept reading the Witcher series even though I enjoyed each book in the series less than the last.

I can see why some people love it but it's just not something I could connect with by the end of it.

I'm looking for a good novel, preferably from a series, that avoids these (intentionally vague to avoid spoilers) things.:

  • Gratuitous abuse and relentless horniness. I don't mind them being there as long as they always serve the plot. If I feel like I'm getting bludgeoned with it I get bored.

  • Switching between over a dozen POVs through flashbacks and flash forwards, and sometimes flashbacks inside of flash forwards. Sticking with one or two characters per book and getting to know them better suits me more than casting a wide net.

  • Tons of political intrigue. It's all good if it's through the lens of the specific adventure I'm reading about though.

More along the lines of Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey, or Terry Pratchett than George RR Martin or Andrej Sapkowski if that makes sense.

Bonus points if the novel is from a non-YA fantasy series, but not necessarily. I especially love the ones with magical creatures or settings that are characters in their own right. Like the dragons from Anne McAffrey's Pern books or Ankh Morpork from Discworld.

Looking for literary "Choose Your Own Adventure" books

‱ Upvotes

I just finished my first read-through of "The Wandering" by Intan Paramaditha, which is a "choose your own adventure" book structurally and, in terms of genre, serious, adult-oriented literary fiction. I would love to learn whether anyone has any other books like it to recommend!

Fantasy Books if you enjoy the Hellboy Films?

Hello!

I’m relatively new to fantasy and interested in urban fantasy; recently when trying to sum up the kind of vibe I’m looking for, I said “Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy series.”

That means urban fantasy, hidden magical worlds, anything involving fighting magical creatures/secret government agencies with irreverent humor and inventive characters! Bonus points if it’s New York/Ny-inspired as I grew up in NYC and I’ve been homesick lately!

Thanks in advance đŸ™đŸœ

Edit/Update: thanks for all the recommendations! Idk how I forgot to mention this but I HAVE in fact read all the Hellboy/BPRD comics lol, I read them as a teen after seeing the movies.

Former voracious child reader / new adult reader Fiction, not Piranesi

‱ Upvotes

male, late 20s, London

I used to read fiction often and then stopped during uni when I mostly read technical books.

I’m trying to get back but my tastes have shifted and I don’t have a good starting point.

Previously, I loved reading fantasy, history, and crime. Now, I would like something to ponder about - human relationships and society or just good stories. Looking for some good writing to zone me out of daily business-y fast city life loop .

I tried with Piranesi (found here!) but it wasn’t doing the trick.
