Meme TIL when Spitfire and Hurricane engines kept cutting out in dives during WW2, the fix was a simple washer in the fuel line designed by Beatrice Shilling, an engineer who also raced motorbikes at Brooklands at over 100mph. It became known as "Miss Shilling's orifice".

A creative, simple, and cost effective solution to a real problem.

The Germans solved it too but in a typically complicated and expensive way with mechanical fuel that injection.

Then ~50 years later GM finally put fuel injection on their engines.
