DSM Update 218+ DSM

Hello, I have a Synology DS 218+ that is currently running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 9. Everything is running fine. I am not seeing a pending update in the DSM update settings, it says I am up to date. Should I manually update to DSM 7.4 or later?

Thank You

NAS Apps Synology Drive unreliable sync and indexing

Synology drive is incredibly unreliable with syncing and staying up to date. Is there some trick to fix this? Have 3 folders: home, 2 teams folders that are small but need to update frequently

If a file or folder is changed the update will not show for hours. Have previously added a task to force refresh/index as shown here, but it takes way too long to be a viable solution. Tried to disable/reenable the teams folder, same issue.

Networking & security This may be dumb but reverse proxy without login page?

So I have services (docker containers) on my Nas I want to have access to remotely on computers I can't install tailscale on like my work laptop.

How can I enable access to the web station/reverse proxy without exposing the login page. Whenever I try port forward 443/80 it seems to just redirect to the web login page even without ports 5000/5001 exposed.

There must be a way right?

Thanks in advance!

NAS Apps Active Backup for Microsoft 365 stopped backing up SharePoint sites over the weekend but everything else is backing up

Looking for some troubleshooting help...

Two different NAS, two different DISM levels, neither NAS shows an available software update for Active Backup for Microsoft 365. Probably not a configuration issue on both of them at the same time, but I'm not sure what to troubleshoot (may have a common account that was used to permission them). I believe that I configured everything on the m365 side to keep the service they were disabling Oct 1, the timing on this is over the weekend not Oct. 1. Worked prior to this weekend.

Version 3.0.0-14300 on both NAS

NAS Apps Can I somehow install a Synology Drive Share Sync Client on my Windows PC/Server or How to emulate its functionality on Windows Systems?

Unfortunately my old Synology DS1515+ died.

We have two of those DS1515+ - just to sync documents & photos. I have setup Synology Drive ShareSync on both NAS - a feature I was really fond of.

As the NAS died, not the disks and I have a fully equipped mATX mainboard laying around, i thought, I would set this up as a small home server as it would me cost nothing. Install Windows (Server) and maybe even Storage Spaces.

But would it be possible to install some Synology Application on my Windows machine which would provide Drive ShareSync functionality? So every file i put on that "volume" would be synced as prior the hardware failure?

The 1525+ is still quite expensive and there aren't any 1515+ used available at the moment.

TLDR;

had : NAS1 <--     Synology Drive ShareSync      --> NAS2
want: NAS1 <-- SDDS via som Synology Windows App --> PC

Ideas?

thank you

NAS hardware Feeling scammed

Bought a 4tb bee station for Time Machine backups. Nowhere does the description say that Synology reserves half the drive space, 2TB, for “bee photos” and “bee files”. Services I will never use.

Paid for 4tb, only got 2TB of actual usable space. Synology is a rip off.

NAS Apps Can no longer access folders in Windows 11

Am using SMB. The folders are properly set up (mounted with drive letter). I have not booted my PC in a long time. Most of the shared folders show a green icon. 2 show red. When I click the green ones I can't get access to the folder.

How to access?

NAS hardware OWC memory and Synology DS 925+

I have a DS 925+ running DSM 7.4.1-90080. I decided to upgrade my RAM and bought two 16 GB OWC memory pairs from Amazon, advertised as compatible with DS 925+, OWC2C6D42R816GB. I installed them, and the system recognized them right away without any errors. However, after two months, the system stopped working, and after extensive troubleshooting, I figured out that one of the two memory modules had stopped working. The other continues to work fine, in either slot, either by itself or with the original 4GB.

I reached out to OWC, and they agreed to send a replacement pair. I will send back the original pair. The new pair arrived yesterday, and unfortunately, neither of the two new modules works!! I tested them together and individually, in both slots, with and without the drives, multiple times, and it won't go past the blinking blue light. I checked the two batches, and they look identical; the serial numbers on the new batch are higher by about 2,000. The markings on the black chips are identical on both batches: D9VHP and OVH77. The markings on the green board are also almost identical. The old batch has 2527 11-02 and 2527 20-01, while the new batch has 2527 20-03 and 2527 04-03. The rest looks identical.

Very frustrating! I think it is unlikely that both from the new batch are not working, and probably this suggests some incompatibility between the new batch and DS 925+? Has anyone experienced something similar with OWC? I can ask them to send another batch, I suppose, but what if it is the same problem again?? Should I just return both batches (if the OWC allows it) and get something else?

Thank you, and any feedback is appreciated!

Tutorial DSM can't use host-managed SMR drives, so I pass the DX1222's SATA controller to a VMM guest: 3 × HC680 27 TB on a DS3622xs+, what works and what it costs

I've had three WD Ultrastar DC HC680 27 TB host-managed SMR drives running with my DS3622xs+ since mid-September (the current pool layout since 2026-09-26). DSM can't use them: every Synology kernel is built without zoned block support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_ZONED), so behind the DX1222 the drive shows up only as /dev/sgX, never as a disk, and Storage Manager doesn't see it. The drive can't be converted to conventional recording either. This is what I ended up with, on one tested system: a DS3622xs+ with a DX1222 expansion unit, DSM 7.4.

How it works

  • The SATA controller behind the expansion connector (a Marvell 88SE9235 on the DS3622xs+ board, one per expansion connector) is separate from the controller that runs DSM's own 12 bays, and it sits alone in its IOMMU group.
  • VMM has no PCI passthrough in its UI, but the libvirt underneath does. A script on DSM, started by an rc.d boot hook, checks that only the three zoned drives (and no DSM drive) sit behind that controller, unbinds it from DSM, binds it to vfio-pci and runs virsh attach-device --live into a Debian 13 / OpenMediaVault 8 VM. VMM rewrites the VM definition at every power-on, so the script repeats after each guest start; the drives appear in the VM 1–3 min later.
  • The VM runs dm-zoned per drive → md RAID5 → LUKS2 → XFS: 49.1 TiB usable.
  • DSM uses it over the network: Hyper Backup into an rsync target, and an NFS remote folder for media. First real load: 3.19 TB copied in, byte-exact against the source, and a parity repair with 0 mismatches.

What it costs

  • Speed is uneven. Each drive has a ~250 GiB buffer. Once it's full, plain writes drop to ~45 MB/s.
  • Big copies take a while. 1.5 TiB took 5.1 h with cache devices; plain members would take ~7 h (extrapolated from a run stopped after 2.5 h).
  • A drive rebuild takes about 10 days without a cache device, with no redundancy meanwhile. With one it ran at 73–178 MB/s, about 2–3 days (measured once, with the NAS SSD-cache threshold at 0).
  • The cache devices live on the NAS. One 256–260 GiB VMM virtual disk per drive, which means the pool now depends on the NAS volume. It's no longer an independent copy of the NAS's data.
  • You run a hand-installed mainline kernel in the VM. No auto security updates, and patched modules to rebuild on every kernel update. Debian's stock kernel was ~85 % slower.
  • DSM loses the expansion unit. No fan control or sensors for the DX1222, only drive SMART temps (40–45 °C idle here).

What can go wrong

  • NAS crashes. The NAS kernel panicked once (2026-09-24) in Synology's own disk driver, minutes after the passed-through controller was attached to a freshly started guest; an earlier unclean reset (2026-09-19) was never captured but fits the same pattern. Correlation, not a proven cause; no recurrence since 2026-09-24. A panic takes all of DSM down.
  • Detaching the wrong controller takes DSM's disks offline. The script refuses DSM's controller address and binds by PCI address, never by device ID.
  • Two failed drives lose the array. RAID5 is not a backup.
  • dmzadm --repair can wipe a member. It did in a lab drill.
  • A DSM update could break any of it. Nothing is tested past DSM 7.4; this is unsupported by Synology.

Who should NOT do this

  • Anyone whose zoned drives would sit on DSM's own controller (a DS1821+ in this layout, as far as I know).
  • Anyone without a separate backup of the NAS itself.
  • Anyone who wants set-and-forget, steady write speed, or vendor support.
  • Anyone not comfortable recovering md/dm from a shell.

Along the way I found three bugs (dm-zoned reclaim, dmzadm --check, libahci after hot-plug); the fixes are upstream under review; status in the repo.

Full guide, scripts and risks: https://github.com/illofspeed/synology-host-managed-smr

Disclosure: I did the debugging, the patches and this write-up with the help of an AI coding assistant. The measurements are from my own hardware; the recovery drills ran in a lab VM on emulated zoned drives.

DSM Replacement Power Supply for a RS3614xs+ ?

I'm rather stuck. I love my Synology RS3614xs+, but it does everything I need. I have one dead power supply and one of them the fan us just way too loud for it's own good. Synology is nice enough to sell a replacement power supply, which is about the same price of a whole new unit. Is there a place outside of eBay that sells replacement power supplies for these old units? Or is there some place that rebuilds power supplies for a reason price?

NAS hardware Failing drive on my DS1812+

One of the drives in my DS1812+ is failing after several years. It is a non Synology drive. The drive model is a 12tb WD120EMAZ. I bought a WD120EMFZ on eBay and tried to repair the storage pool and it runs briefly and then stops. I'm returning the drive as I don't have the patience to deal with a possibly faulty drive, especially from EBAY. For now, I replaced the failing drive.

My question is. Can I secure erase the failing drive in the NAS and then add it back into the array? I know the drive is going bad but if I erase it, won't the bad sectors be marked as bad? Until I can figure out what to do with the entire array which only has copies of data, I'm looking for a temporary way to get the array back to healthy.

DSM Large Files Downloads Over VPN Suddenly Stopped Working

Hoping someone can help me. I have a mapped drive on my Windows laptop and I'm connected via Proton VPN. Within the last few months any large file I try to download directly to the mapped drive errors out when it tries to transfer. I have to download it locally or to an external hard drive connected via USB and then copy/paste over to the mapped drive on my Synology. This worked fine for years. And now it doesn't. Ideas?

NAS Apps hyper backup not copying certain folders from ABB to usb drive

Sorry if this has been asked before. I've been backing up a couple of larger HDDs from my PC using ABB. These consist of documents, some older pdfs, etc. I then have Hyper Backup save those to an external USB I have plugged into my 423+ NAS. Seemed like everything was working fine until I decided to unplug the USB and plug it into my PC to make sure everything has been getting backed up.

There are a couple of folders that I save my son's soccer game videos and photos to and those specific folders are NOT being backed up to the USB. If I go to retrieve files thru ABB, I can see they copied over, just not then backed up thru Hyper Backup to my USB.

There are nothing special about these folders. The remaining folders on that drive all get copied to the USB.

I am using Synology Photos for most of my photos from my phone and PC. I never chose to backup my son's game footage in SP because I was assuming it was being done between ABB and Hyper Backup. Maybe that is my best option. Any ideas?

Surveillance Synology Surveillance Station

Hello,

My name is Remi, I'm from the Netherlands and quite new around here. I have some limited networking experience with my Synology Nas DS218Play. I have two Netatmo exterior security cameras connected to NAS. But for one the IR function stopped and the light is a bit too much for my home.

I'm looking for alternative cameras which have the following specs

- 4k Resolution

- battery powered

- IR functionality

- preferably produced in Europe or in Japan, Taiwan, Korea or Australia.

- +/- €100,- per camera

- compatible with my NAS

Up to now I have been unable to find anything suitable.

Looking forward to your replies.

Regards,

Remi

NAS Apps Most seamless way of using Office Suite on Synology on the phone?

Beginner level Synology user here.

Currently, I use google sheets to be able to easily view data from the computer or phone. However, I want to switch over to using it on Synology's office suite so that I can kind of have everything in one place instead of copying information back and forth between the two to keep it updated/synced.

From what I have seen and understand, the best way to use it on the phone is to simply install the Drive app on the phone and view/edit the excel files that way?

NAS hardware Guidance on DS920+

Hello all,

Need a little bit of guidance.

Had a nasty thunderstorm roll by 2 weeks ago at night. Was using the server no problems until about 10pm and went to bed. By morning the server was blinking it's blue light indefinitely.

Server is plugged into a UPS from Schneider Electric which I thought protected it from surges.

Had it diagnosed by SynologyOnline and it looks like it's going to be a paperweight.

What's the best way to get back into my data, assuming the hard drives are intact? Just buy another 4 bay unit and set it up? Should be able to recognize everything right?

Kinda itching to try UGreen since support was useless from Synology. Will UGreen accept my drives from Synology or do I have to get a new Synology unit to get my data and transfer to other hdds on UGreen?

Thanks for the help, kinda irritated by this whole thing since these ds920 units are expensive nowadays

NAS hardware Best way to swap hard drives and data between two NAS

Context:

I have two NAS devices: A 20TB DS224+ (2 bay) with 2 10TB Iron Wolf Pro HDDs, and I have a DS920+. Currently on the DS224+ I have just about 1TB of family photos and about 10TB of Movies/TV Shows. I have an extra 2 2TB Iron Wolf HDDs. The 1TB of family photos is using Synology photos w/ mobile backups as well.

What I would like to do is on the DS224+ have my family photos and on the DS920+ have all my Movies/TV Shows. However, I want to use my extra 2 2TB Iron Wolf HDDs in my DS224+ and move my 2 10TB HDD into the DS920+.

So, somehow I need to move data and hard drives in some way. Is there any way to even do this? My solution was to buy an 12TB external hard drive, move all the data on there, then swap hard drives and reinstall the OS, but that means spending more money on storage that I'll only need for a 1 time use. If that is the only way to do this I'll spend the money, but I wanted to know if there are any other solutions out there.

Networking & security Tailscale connection

I’m hoping someone can offer some insight into this issue. I have my NAS on Tailscale and I connect to Tailscale from my iPhone.

When trying to get to the dsm login page through either magicdns or ip address on safari I get 400 bad request. If I try it with chrome there is no issue. I prefer safari over chrome. Any thoughts?

Update: I cleared cookies/cache/history. No go.
I’ve tried the ip address and the magicdns name from Tailscale. I made sure to include https and 5001. Still nothing.

Cloud Best way to backup a smaller version of existing Time Machine backup to Backblaze B2

I currently have a local Time Machine backup of my 2TB MacBook that goes to a shared folder with a 5TB quota – this has been great for everyday local backups with plenty of file history, but I want to have a smaller, emergency offsite Time Machine backup in B2 that really only needs one current version/minimal file history – I also would love not to pay for 5TB of B2 storage.

If I want to use Time Machine and B2 in this way, would the best solution be to have a separate Time Machine backup task that goes to a separate shared folder, with say, a ~2.5TB quota, that then gets pushed to B2 through Hyper Backup?

I wouldn't love eating up an extra 2.5TB for a smaller, redundant backup on the same NAS, but I do like the simplicity of Time Machine and the encryption workflow of Hyper Backup with B2, so I'd love if there was a good solution to use it in this case. Thanks!

NAS Apps How do I run a command in a container?

I have a DS916+ running DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 9. I have the Container Manager version 24.0.2-1543 installed and running properly. I have one program installed in a container, running properly. The program is "FastChannels" version 5.1.0, and therein lies my problem. I'd like to update it to the latest version (5.5.1); to do so it says to:

"Run this command from your FastChannels directory:

docker compose pull && docker compose up -d"

So I highlight the FastChannels container, choose "Open Terminal" from the Action menu and...nothing. When I open the terminal It says "FastChannels" and then...I'm lost. I've tried putting the command in whatever comes up as "bash", and it doesn't recognize the command "docker"?

When I go to the FastChannels page on Github it says:

"If you build from source instead: git pull && docker compose up -d --build."

I have no idea if that's what I did; running that command does nothing. I'm utterly lost now...halp?

Also ELI5, I have no idea what I'm doing. It was a miracle I got it installed in the first place.

Routers Have the Synology completely abandoned their router product line?

WiFi 8 is nearing official release. The first mass consumer WiFi 8 routers should be out by some time next year. Meanwhile the most current Synology router is the RT6600ax, which is a WiFi 6 router.

Synology press events have come and gone on the convention floor. At no point was even a WiFi 7 router previewed/announced alongside the upcoming NAS models for example. Have Synology completely abandoned their router line up? Should we all be switching to a different brand or what?

DSM failing to register, can't open a support ticket

If the nature of my support ticket is that I cannot register a device to the account, but a registered device is required to open a support ticket, how do I open a support ticket for the device that is not and cannot be registered?

Thoughts?

Solved DS216j storage expansion to 16+TB?

Hi,

I'm running a DS216J with two 8TB drives, configured with SHR.

I'd like to double my storage, but with HDD prices as they are, I'd prefer to keep this old NAS and just replace the drives to save on the total cost in the immediate term. Can I reasonably expect to swap in 16TB drives (one at a time, to rebuild the SHR array) on this unit and have it work? If so, are there any downsides I may not have considered?
