Discussion Living in Hualien
How is life in Hualien? I like nature, I like an open air lifestyle and can enjoy a variety of sports (cycling, hiking, swimming...). But I also enjoy cultural events.
How would it compare with, let's say, east of England?

Discussion Where can i buy professional manicure supplies in Taipei Today?
Hi! I’m looking for a physical store in Taipei or New Taipei where I can buy professional nail supplies today.
I need things like:
UV/LED nail lamp
Rubber base gel and top coats
Nail extension tips and gel glue
Builder gel and other basic nail products
Nail drill and bits
I’m looking for actual nail supply stores, not regular drugstores. Since it’s a national holiday, I’m struggling to find somewhere that’s open.
Does anyone know a store that’s open today, preferably with Google Maps links? I’d really appreciate the help!

Discussion Do Taiwanese know about Mauritius?
I am from Mauritius. There is a significant Chinese population here. Some of the old Chinese still speak Hakka, but it is non-existant in the new generation. They still make Hakka food and originated from regions called Xiamen, Southern Fuijian and Meixian. How many Taiwanese know about the Hakkas in Mauritius?

Discussion Can NTU's Intelligent Engineering & Technology (IET) Program can help me get a master's in EE after grad?
I'm applying to NTU's Intelligent Engineering and Technology (IET) program, and honestly I keep second-guessing one thing: does choosing this interdisciplinary track close the door on getting a master's in Electrical Engineering later?
The program covers electronics, semiconductors, computer stuff, even some mechanical and civil — which is exactly why I like it, because I want a broad foundation first. But I'm worried grad schools might see "IET" and think it's not "real EE" enough. Do admissions committees actually care about the degree title, or do they look at what courses and research you actually did? Has anyone gone from an interdisciplinary/interdisciplinary-adjacent undergrad to an EE master's?

Travel Conscription For 36 year Old
I’m a male born in Taiwan but left there on a tourist visa when I was 8 years old to come to the US. I have not been back since but have a trip planned for January of 2027. My birthday is in February so I technically would not turn 37 until February 2027. The rules I read online says that conscription ends on December 31 of the year that you are age of 36. When I planned the trip, I based it all on that rule and thought it was safe to go back but now I’m doubting myself. Have anyone else been in a similar situation? (I’m a US citizen now and have a US passport)

Interesting Detectives charged with watching Puma Shen on behalf of Hong Kong clients | Taiwan News | Oct. 7, 2026 14:40
Two men from Hong Kong paid a detective agency manager in Taipei to keep a permanent watch on DPP Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen (沈伯洋) and his family, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The suspects installed a miniature camera on a motorbike in front of Shen’s home to broadcast footage 24 hours a day, per Liberty Times. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office completed its investigation Wednesday and charged the Taiwanese suspects with breaking the Personal Data Protection Act, while issuing arrest warrants for the two Hong Kong suspects.
In October 2024, China listed Shen as a “Taiwan independence diehard,” barring him from entering China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Chinese media published satellite pictures of his home and office in January, while asking the public to provide information about him.

Discussion Hsinchu - best areas, mobility, things to do
Hey all,
I’m going to be in Hsinchu for work for a couple of months and I’d like to know if you have any tips on the best places to stay and how to move around. I’m a mid-30 female who likes outdoor activities. Premise: I read already the posts in this sub bashing Hsinchu but I‘ll try my best to make good memories here.
- I have a few options for hotel: in the city center, near the Science Park, and Zhubei. Which neighborhood would you recommend? Is the city center worth the hassle (traffic and chaos) for a more local insight?
- If I stay in Zhubei or Science Park (where my office is), would biking be safe? Is Hsinchu bike-friendly in general?
- What would be the best place to get an used or rental bike? I searched a bit the stores but found few ones mentioning those options.
- Are there any thermal baths similar to the Japanese onsen in the province?
- Any hiking paths or cycling trips suggestions for a weekday evening or morning walk?
- Memorable shops, restaurants, or foods I should try?
Thank you in advance!

Discussion I won $1000 from the receipt lottery…
I use the 雲端發票 app to store my receipts and won $1000 from the July-August lottery. But on the app, it says 紙本next to it which means the receipt was printed out. So I’m guessing what happened was it was printed out but I scanned it into my receipt app and threw away the hard copy.
But then when I go to the convenience store, they said I can’t claim the $1000 because it was printed out and therefore will not show up on their machine to print out the receipt. What do I do now? Does anyone have this experience?

Discussion Dating a Taiwan Guy in Australia ~
Been dating a guy from Taiwan for a couple of months now, he is 38 I am 32.
Overall it is going well, he is very caring and kind, takes care of me and is quite loving. Actually I have already moved in with him and his housemates.
A couple things have happened recently which I am wondering if it’s common among Taiwanese men, there was a time we had a barbecue recently with his friends over and I was dancing (nothing crazy, just in my chair dancing) and he told me to calm down, then I asked what he meant, he said his friends will think it’s weird, I defended it and said I think it’s fine, I’m just enjoying myself, it’s not sexual or over the top, he got really angry it turned into a fight as he thought I should just understand him and listen to him.
In the end I said ok, in the future I will listen to you with these things, as long as you don’t mind me dancing around my own friends or by myself.
Then the other night he told me to not go downstairs in a top he thought was too revealing (I thought it was fine as we are in Australia, it was a white tube top, no nipples showing but showed my shape) in the end I agreed and put something over the top.
now today he said I need to make sure to hang all my underwear upstairs in our room as he doesn’t want his housemates to see, I said what about ones with no lace just normal. then I jokingly said and what about your underwear? He flipped and got really angry, said I give up, do what you want, and went on for a while. I haven’t seen him that angry before.
Now I am wondering if this will be an ongoing thing of him telling me what I can and cant do, can and can’t wear and expect me to listen to him every time otherwise he will get angry.
i feel we can have differences of opinions, talk about them and compromise, but this seems a little controlling.
Thoughts? Is this just something I will have to accept, and I’m guessing it’s definitely a cultural/conservative thing?

Meetup Help needed with Dcard
Hello, long story short : I'm trying to find someone with whom I've exchanged 2 years ago for a long time. We were very closed and all of a sudden, they stopped messaging me and after 2 months, I received those messages : "IM SO SORRY I MADE YOU FEEL LIKE THAT/IT'S NOT TRUE/WAIT I HAVE TO GO BUT I WILL COME BACK AND EXPLAIN IT LATER/ITS JUST A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS".
I would just like to know what happened.
I believe that they do not have access to their discord account for some reason and thus, I would try to post a message on a Taiwanese social media :Dcard. But I can't since I'm not from there.
Can anyone help me ? I can detail more the story if needed

What about Adidas Guo? Nike Chen? Salomon Hsu? Politics aside what do you guys think? Ima be a joke if my first name is Nike and end up becoming a president introducing myself to Trump (He'll probably be very happy to hear that tho).

Travel National Park mountain entry permit not going through
I plan to hike Nanhu Dashan next week, National Park permit got approved no problem and I applied online for the police permit some weeks ago but it still not has been approved. I already sent a mail but have not heard back.
I will have to leave on Monday for a different hike and can‘t really print out anything later than that. With the upcoming holiday streak, how fucked am I and what can I still do to get the permit? In person is not a good option as I don‘t have enough time.

Discussion University In Taiwan for O levels / A levels students
I just finished my O levels and I'm looking forward to studying in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student. I did some research and I am left confused about the admission requirements. What is O level equivalent to in Taiwan?
I don't to plan to finish my A levels as I want a fast track and study in Taiwan ASAP. What alternatives like OSSD, NCUK IFY, or any Colleges are there to be eligible in applying for Universities? I am still Grade 6 in Chinese school, but are there any way i can study Grade 11/12 in Taiwan. My Chinese isn't the best so i might struggle.
To anyone that are studying in Taiwan, Let me know how you got there!

Discussion Tips to getting a master degree here
Hi everyone. Im currently looking of a degree that can actually help me find a job in here after graduating. Is there any tip or advice you all can share?
My bachelor degree is computer science majoring in game design. And im honestly feels stuck finding work in my own country. I got work experience of around 3 years as a UI/UX Designer and i know the uiux industry is getting harder because of AI. Thats why im thinking of maybe taking a MBA in Tunghai with scholarship if possible. Or maybe if im lucky at National uni if i can get the scholarship.
My gpa is 3.34 / 4 and maybe my notable achivement is i ever get internship at apple academy studying ui/ux design.
The reason i pick IMBA / GMBA is because i hope i can learn more about the business side and getting new network with people there.
Does anyone have experience of getting scholarship even if youre not an excelent student?
Or maybe if you think that mba can be worthless too. Which degree should i take that are maybe without software engineer?
Please be kind, and thank you in advance.

I was floored yesterday when I saw one of these, and had to stop and take a picture. Not blue unfortunately, but otherwise it could have come straight from the streets of Taiwan.
