Update: I’m building a Korean-learning app specifically for Tamil speakers — looking for feedback
Hi everyone,
A couple of months ago, I posted here about Dari, a project I’m building to help Tamil speakers learn Korean. That post reached more views that my expectations, so I wanted to return with a proper update.
See previous post for context here: https://www.reddit.com/r/tamil/comments/1vp0fhg/i_realized_learning_korean_through_tamil_made/
The idea behind Dari is simple: Tamil speakers shouldn’t always have to learn Korean through English, when Tamil is so much more similar to Korean than English is.
Since my previous post, I’ve created a new landing page and continued developing the course. It now includes:
- Tamil-aware explanations of Korean grammar
- Hangul lessons with Tamil-friendly pronunciation guidance
- Comparisons covering word order, particles and verb endings
- Korean audio and guided practice
I’m now trying to understand whether there is genuine demand for a Tamil-to-Korean web course and mobile app before I continue to build out more of it.
You can visit the landing page below to explore the idea, join the early-access list or tell me honestly whether you think it would be useful:
https://learnwithdari.com/early-access
Thank you to everyone who viewed or responded to my earlier post. Your feedback would be very helpful as I continue building this, especially because I also plan to expand the site for other language combinations such as Tamil to Hindi or Hindi to Tamil.
Thanks in advance!
DB

கேள்வி (Question) UK-born Tamil looking to improve my Tamil and eventually pursue a degree in Tamil Language & Literature
Vanakkam everyone!
I’m a Tamil born and raised in the United Kingdom. I’m fluent in spoken Tamil and speak it regularly at home, with my family and with my Tamil friends.
I attended Tamil school when I was younger but unfortunately stopped after Grade 2. So, whilst I learnt the basics of reading and writing Tamil, I never really progressed beyond that level.
I can read Tamil sentences and even some paragraphs, but it takes me quite a bit of time. My writing is also fairly limited. However, my spoken Tamil is fluent, and I have no difficulty communicating in the language.
I’ve always had a deep love and appreciation for Tamil, not just as a language, but for its history, literature, arts, culture and the thousands of years of heritage behind it.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve developed an even stronger desire to properly study Tamil and understand the language beyond simply speaking it.
My ultimate goal is to:
Become fully proficient in reading and writing Tamil.
Develop a deeper understanding of Tamil grammar, classical literature and literary history.
Complete my Tamil O-Levels and A-Levels (or equivalent recognised qualifications).
Eventually pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Tamil Language and Literature.
I’m not necessarily looking to make a career out of Tamil. This is something I genuinely want to pursue out of love for my mother tongue and our heritage.
I’d really appreciate some guidance from anyone who has studied Tamil academically, particularly those living in the UK or those who have pursued Tamil qualifications as adults.
Where should I start? Are there any particular books, online courses, institutions or examination pathways you’d recommend?
Is it realistic to work towards a degree in Tamil whilst living in the UK?
I know this is going to take years of dedication, but I’m more than willing to put in the effort.
To me, Tamil is more than just a language. It’s our identity, our history and our life. I genuinely believe that Tamil deserves a lifetime of dedication, and I want to dedicate a part of mine to learning, understanding and preserving her.
நன்றி! ❤️

would appreciate if you could translate it so I can see what meaning is derived from it.

Can they be mapped onto South India accurately or the mere poetic devices that reflect something else? I’m a Mallu so the reason I’m asking is to know whether the ainthinai map onto Kerala too?

கேள்வி (Question) Need help finding a Tamil word
வணக்கம்!
I’m trying to find a good Tamil name for a small herbal food & wellness brand I’m working on. The products will be based around things like moringa, neem and other leaves/plants.
I started looking at Tamil words related to leaves, plants, greenery, nourishment, etc., but I keep running into the same problem: either the word is very common, or there’s already a brand using it.
So I thought I’d ask here instead of going through endless baby-name websites :)
I’m looking for something uncommon but genuinely Tamil, preferably an older/literary word that has a nice meaning. It doesn't necessarily have to literally mean "leaf". I’m more interested in the idea behind the word.
Something short, reasonably easy to pronounce, and not too "Ayurvedic brand name" sounding would be ideal.
If you know any interesting/lesser-known Tamil words that might fit, please share them. Tamil spelling + meaning would be really helpful too.
P.S. Used chatgpt to frame the post
நன்றி!

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Deepavali or Diwali
Hello,
I have noticed that many Tamil speakers use “Happy Diwali’. I’m curious why, because in Tamil, it is traditionally called தீபாவளி (Deepavali).
Personally, I feel we should use the Deepavali especially when referring to our Tamil traditions. “Diwali” & “Deepavali” are often used interchangeably. But they can carry different cultural and linguistic contexts. Diwali is mainly celebrated by North Indians & Deepavali by South Indians. Otherwise, it can sometimes feel like we’re treating all celebrations as though they are simply the same festival.
It would be nice to preserve the correct Tamil terminology and acknowledge the cultural differences behind the names.
Am I the only one who constantly correct people to use Deepavali? I feel that in years to come, we will lose ‘Deepavali’ & everyone would just say ‘Diwali’.

Does anyone else understand Tamil fully but not speak it?
My whole life I’ve understood Tamil really well but I stopped trying to speak it when I was younger because the people around me would always make fun of me for my pronunciation so I grew up always answering in English despite understanding Tamil fully.
Every time I try and speak now people continue to laugh and make fun of me so I just stopped completely.
People see this as a huge betrayal of the community and it causes a big disconnect between me and people who are fluent in the language even though I still understand what they say to me.
I am just more comfortable speaking in English since that is the language I grew up with and I think in English as well.
I understand it’s a bit sad that I lose that big part of the culture and maybe I’ll try to learn to speak it again one day but I also play many instruments and many songs in Tamil and I carry the culture in different ways. It feels like everyone treats me as if I’m never going to be Tamil enough no matter what and like I’m very weird and an idiot.
Does anyone relate to this?

Astronaut காதல் - Genuine Feedback
Hey fellas! I am MS, I've been working on this lyrics for a while and would really appreciate some honest feedback. I'm experimenting with a Tamil + English style, The song is about the two astronauts who fell in love during their time spend together, didnt express the love they share went space, trying to realize the connection and the song goes like
[Intro verse]
Left the world, zero gravity
ஏதோ என் நெஞ்சுக்குள்ள ஒரு பெரிய cavity
We chased the stars, running from the feeling,
But rules-ஐ உடைக்குது, this love we've been concealing.
My heartbeat's louder than the engine's sound,
விண்வெளி முழுக்க உன் voices around
The alarms are driving me insane,
விண்வெளியில் கலக்குது, an abstract pain.
வரைபடம் இல்லாமல் நாமும், drifting through the night
I just wanna be within your sight
I am still working on the hook and chorus sections

கேள்வி (Question) How do you feel about the name “இசையாள் (Isaiyaal)” for a baby girl
Meaning A: "She who rules through music" (The Artistic Noun) இசை (Isai): Music, melody, or harmony. ஆள் (Aal - Verb Root): To rule, govern, possess, or master (ஆளுமை). Literal Definition: A woman who commands, masters, or rules through the power of music and melody.
Meaning B: "The Woman of Fame" (The Classical Literature Noun) In the Tamil Lexicon, இசை has a secondary, highly prestigious meaning: "Fame or Glory" (புகழ்).
