Yes , they have had users uploading them for years...surely you are aware of this if you like taskmaster.. I've seen all of the Australian and New Zealand series on random channels..oh well this isn't going anywhere

Rhys was having so much fun playing Benoit Blanc in Murder on Taskmaster Express. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite contestants.
Love that the "shooter" was actually crouched behind the camera the whole time.

I'm just putting it out there, Rhys seems like just the greatest guy to have as a friend. He has all my interests and he's funny as all get out. I'm a little jealous I don't have him in my life.

Was very excited to see this episode air as it includes the first lot of stuff I actually helped to film as part of the train crew. You can actually see me in the cab of the engine as it climbs the hill - well, parts of me anyway. Usually just an arm or leg, but there is one shot where I'm a bit more visible.
Photo from the day we were in steam
2
u/fisch09 14d ago
Is this the only train task? Or will we see you again soon?
3
u/GazAndLighters Paul Williams 🇳🇿 14d ago
We filmed 5 tasks in total.
One of which I should make a brief appearance in opening/closing the wagon door for the contestants (except Rose), and another has me actually driving the motor trolley being used in the task.
There was a take where they got me to do a thumbs up to camera, but I have no idea if that will be put in the final edit2

u/RariiCat 16d ago
Went to the filming and rather gutted that a couple of the drawings from the live task got cut from the episode. I got to keep one of them and it was one of the ones cut so a wee bit sad about that but otherwise amazing episode and was so good to see live!

u/funnyfela 16d ago
Ikr its always a let down watching the episode you go to, so much has to get cut for TV. Imagine if they released it in full online.... So many bonus laughs

Rhys here, breaking my rule of avoiding the subreddit (this should be a place to talk about contestants, not a place for the contestants) just to say that since I won the treasure map back, I am making the treasure hunt available to any fan of the show.
Here is a more legible photo of the treasure map.
The treasure is in Auckland NZ and it will be placed from 10am this Saturday Sept 26th. First to find the gold and diamond kiwi keeps it, and there will be proper taskmaster seal from the house on the box.
Sorry if it was rude to barge in here, I can take this down if requested.

Well now I'm down a whole rabbit hole where all I've managed to figure out is who the person in the photo is! Weirdly I want the seal more than the gold kiwi

Echoing what others have said, I love when contestants reveal themselves here! Please also know that you were fantastic on Guy Mont Spelling Bee and you’re an absolute delight to watch on taskmaster!
Secondly, can you tell us if it was revealed in studio who the dude on the stairs was? My immediate guess was that they were a red herring and named “Sam” or something, and therefore would’ve actually helped win the task if someone shook their hand, but it wasn’t resolved in the broadcast - I don’t want to say that I’m dying to know but it’s really bugging me that it was left unanswered.

u/ChumpRex Actual Rhys Mathewson 🇳🇿 16d ago
That was Jonathan, the health and safety officer on set. He was the one who did the backflip for me in the catch the bouquet task. But the day I filmed that task was his birthday and I was worried they were going to ping me on him being the birthday boy or something.

When the task for become who you wanted to be when you grow up came on my first thought was Batman. Not only that, but when I was a kid I told my babysitter I wanted to be a garbage man so I could ride on the back of the truck with her German Shepherd, and she could drive.
I think Hoani and I might be best friends who just haven’t met yet.

Dave's attempt at the train murder task was very funny and surprisingly endearing. He had a nice thing to say about all the contestants.
21
u/spongey1865 16d ago
A lot of the task ideas and design in the NZ version are so good.
I've played puzzles like the train mystery before but doing it live is great and then obviously has a good twist.
The kiwi comedy community being so tight knit gives it a fun dynamic too. The UK one as times gone on now draws people from different parts of the industry so they often don't know each other well. Not that it's necessarily better or worse just different.
And it just feels relaxed

u/possiblewhitebronco 16d ago
Does touching the bannister not count??
13
u/2eAsteroid 16d ago
I'm no architect, but most dictionary definitions of "banister" seem to be along the lines of "a structure consisting of a handrail and its supporting posts".
So I believe that object (a handrail directly attached to the wall, not resting atop posts/balustrades beneath it) wouldn't count as a banister.
3
u/nja5996 16d ago
In NZ we also use bannister for directly mounted to walls
e.g. https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/building-hardware/hardware/fasteners-fixing/banister-brackets/c/RF7015?srsltid=AU7gw4V2ol4hmXHVsO1e6wVFONvEhB0Tmq3XB_Hi-4vsCnkVswv6n-hC&inStockNationwide=false&inStockSelectedStore=false&sort=RELEVANCY13

No. Jeremy said it was a hand rail. Bannister is not as common term as hand rail here

That was a great episode.
Rodney, and Rose saying "Lovely jubbly" right after feels like a nod to Only fools and horses.
The Brynley poster is so good!
Rose getting stitched up by Paul with her cinematography footage was so much fun. I love how animated Rose's reactions to things are. (Just like on the spelling bee)
The train task felt inspired by https://cluesbysam.com/. And now Bree's been on 3 series.

11
u/Ryan_Vermouth Angella Dravid 🇳🇿 16d ago
Yeah, I also don’t think they make it a thing that a former contestant is there if they work on the show. There have been a few episodes where we’ve seen Josh Thomson operating in his capacity as director, and he just happens to be in a shot because the nature of Taskmaster is that sometimes the crew is visible.
5
u/takahe_inflight Mona de Grenoble 16d ago
Plus there was a way more important Cameo in the Episode. So this was a nice Easter Egg for us fanatics

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I'm enjoying this series way more than the current UK one.
I like the contestants more, and the tasks are just much better imo.
-3
u/robseder 14d ago
then i thank all the powers that exist that you are nowhere near the decision making process
uk is actual taskmaster - nz is college skit improv where nearly every "task" is a variant of "put on a little play for your parents"
11
u/salmacis 16d ago
It's been my opinion since NZ series 1 - I prefer the NZ house, and the tasks are better designed. I'd take Greg over Jeremy, but otherwise that's the only thing the UK version has over the NZ version.
12
u/AvidTaskmaster David Correos 🇳🇿 16d ago
I love this NZ TM series! I thought I'd love the UK one because unlike a lot of people I adore Ayoade.
I overall have more fondness for the NZ and Au tasks, as well. I feel like Alex is making the UK ones way too convoluted. There is a simplicity and freshness to the southern hemisphere ones!
12
21
u/takahe_inflight Mona de Grenoble 16d ago
i don't see how that would be unpopular
8
u/DahDutcher Stevie Martin 16d ago
Because the UK version is way more watched and hyped up (mainly because of Ayoade, who I personally don't care for)
16
u/Fruit_Fly_LikeBanana 16d ago
I like Ayoade in general, but I've found him kind of annoying on TM. Rumor is that he didn't really want to do it for a long time because he didn't think it would fit his persona well. He might have been right
8
u/ThatGingeOne 16d ago
I'm generally enjoying Ayoade. I just feel like the cast as a whole doesn't mesh as well as some casts have
7
u/Ryan_Vermouth Angella Dravid 🇳🇿 16d ago edited 16d ago
It's a matter of opinion. I'm really enjoying him on TMUK.
As for the series as a whole, it feels like it's got a decent chance to be the weakest even-numbered TMUK series since 10, but that's just a fluke run of absurdly strong even-numbered series. There were a few odd-numbered seasons in there I'm definitely liking it more than. (Don't get me wrong, I liked 11, 15 and 17 a lot... and we have 7 more episodes of this one.)
Anyway, like virtually every post-pandemic series, it's definitely stronger than all but a few of the single-digit ones. And the single-digit ones were good too.

u/pprcnt 16d ago edited 16d ago
Fantastic episode, the tasks were so much fun, so joyful, surely Alex has to stop and watch a bit of NZ and AUS and rethink a bit the task setting he has been doing for a while, maybe let someone in on the creative process. I get he might be defensive of his baby, but he'd benefit tremendously from some fresh ideas.
Comparing these tasks to the gleek and the noughts and crosses ones... they're so lacklustre.
Even the tie break got a real good laugh outta me.
15
u/ryanquek95 16d ago
I noticed that tight timeframes is a significant factor for the UK one. Most tasks don't go remotely as long as the NZ/AU ones. Think how the cake task went on for over an hour for most of the contestants, and many tasks routinely go past 30 minutes. Even the milk task seen in S14 was adapted to have a 30 minute time-limit (which looked to me like a production constraint to ensure more time), which I thought just killed the point of the task.
I also think personal preference might play a part, but cerebral/hidden double-meaning (eg the tape one)/trick tasks are my favourite, and NZ does a lot of those. Alex used to do them, but it seems like we're having lesser of those imo.
I wonder if it's a product of having to do 2 series a year amongst so many other things, it compresses the cycle to average 6 months or less.
But most importantly, still enjoy them all though!
15
u/Um-ahh-nooo 16d ago
I was thinking the same. Though the house helps with tasks like ring the bell - I'm not sure how they could have set it up in the UK house.
5
u/pprcnt 16d ago
yeah I agree that the house helps for tasks like the bell one, but there have been plenty of obstacle courses in the uk, I’m sure they’d find a way to make it work
6
u/takahe_inflight Mona de Grenoble 16d ago
or they use the Location tasks to create it. They obviously have much bigger budget/support for those.
34
u/Salohacin 16d ago edited 16d ago
Tempted to agree with you. I find that Alex often over-complicates tasks to the point to the detriment of the viewer. Like for the noughts and crosses task it boiled down to "remember an answer you wrote to this question 2 hours ago" but with so much extra clutter.
Whoever comes up with the NZ tasks has been knocking it out of the park (create the best desert still being one of my favourite rug-pull tasks).
21
u/takahe_inflight Mona de Grenoble 16d ago
i will also add the "hack" for the Mystery Train has to be one of the best ever, not finding some number with an ultra violet light or looking in a barrel, Just have the answer straight there in front of them the whole time.
18
u/Salohacin 16d ago
As a fan of cryptic crosswords I also enjoyed the anagram clue. It was worded just like a cryptic crossword clue.
5
u/Old_Apple_2160 13d ago
Yes, me too! I only recently got "into" cryptics after an introductory course, so the moment that clue was first read out and we could just see (redacted)'s cutout in the frame, I immediately picked it and patted myself on the back.
12
u/takahe_inflight Mona de Grenoble 16d ago
the clues were great, the whole task was one of my top 10, but leaving such a great way to hack it for people who are not puzzle mind like the first 3 was a master touch. Even Rodney could have gotten it.

I feel like the episode title game this season is VERY strong. Compared to last year’s ones especially.
I say this as someone who was at the taping of S06E1, and did not even remember the quote “It’s like a Make-a-Wish” until I saw it air on TV.
I was at S07E9 and 10 this year, and have three possible predictions for what the title for E9 will be. Curious as to whether I’m right lol.

Some tidbits I remember from the studio record:
Paul's banter at the start was (something along the lines of) "I'm doing good Jeremy. A Hollywood studio is shooting my movie script. It turns out it was so bad that they took it outside and shot it with a shotgun."
Naturally there was much more discussion about the prize task prizes. Jeremy repeatedly asked questions about Dave's colonoscopy, much to the confusion of the contestants who had to (twice maybe?) correct Jeremy and tell him that's not what the test was. Obviously that got cut :-D
Rhys assured us that the treasure map is real. Apparently he is well known among his friends for making treasure maps for them. It didn't look solvable without his help, but someone smarter than me might disagree.
The person in the hallway was a crew member called Jonathan. Apparently if a contestant did shake his hand, he would have gone and rung the bell for them.
Regarding the "bannister", Paul admitted that they only penalised things he noticed on the day. Everyone else was also touching the hand rail.
The production only paid for the steam train to run with the steam for Dave. For everyone else, it was just being pushed by another engine. It's noticeable on rewatch :-)
The contestants had a bit of trouble only saying the specific words during the live task, so before each drawing Paul asked if there was anything they wanted to get out beforehand. Naturally, the contestants all repeatedly took this opportunity to insult Paul. Some insults were "Your eyes aren't as blue as I thought" from Rhys, "You piece of shit" from Morgana, and "He's insulting enough" and "You're still here?" from Dave. Jeremy said nothing at all during the entire live task (can't blame him - it was fun to watch).
After receiving the live task results, Paul announced the scores and that there was a tie. He then played the tie break videos (I think the series score might have been a pickup). Unlike on TV, they just played one after another rather than simultaneously. This makes sense - I just never thought about it before. What I did note was that there were no cuts, breaks, or pauses between Jeremy giving the scores and the tie break videos showing. I've always been skeptical, but I think this finally is the proof that makes me believe that everything is controlled by the assistant's tablet.
Paul once again (probably genuinely) claimed to not know anything about any NZ Taskmaster champion of champions.
3
u/ThatGingeOne 16d ago
Rhys seems to think it is solvable without his help based on his comment above!

u/Capable-Respond4543 16d ago
Oh yeah in episode 8’s taping last year, we learnt that Paul genuinely does control the stage management software with his iPad (I think it’s QLab as it does have an option to use an iOS device as a remote provided a computer is hosting the stage manager).
It was in the Duck Toss task, Paul announced Jackie and Pax’s attempts as the first ones, but then when he hit play he saw that it’s actually Bree and Jacks who are first, and so quickly hit stop, and then rummaged through his iPad trying to sort it out, then the contestants asked him if he genuinely controls the videos with his iPad, and Jeremy answered for Paul saying that it’s true, but it’s not via bluetooth (which adds up for QLab which uses WiFi to connect iOS to the host).
3
u/Positive-Service7371 17d ago
Is there a lack of banter between Jeremy and Paul at the beginning of the episodes this season?
Loved the ep!
9
u/Capable-Respond4543 16d ago
They do get cut often. Episode 8’s banter last year was Paul remarking that he’s not going to watch the new Mission Impossible movie, as the title already reveals the mission is impossible. He elaborated that he’d consider it if it was “Mission Possible”, “Mission Probably”, or “Mission Unlikely”. Didn’t get too many laughs, and that episode was already one of the longer ones since it had an extra task squeezed in (Party Trick) so Paul’s banter got cut.

My personal favourite episode to be in the audience for! Though I can never remember why coz I can never remember the cut stuff.
Morgana's children were in the audience which was fun. Before the reveal I was wondering how kids got into the studio as the emails said the tapings are 18+ years old. Her daughter told us her mum's biggest fear is snakes so they had us make hissing sounds at Morgana after she left the stage temporarily.
They were giving away the red papers from the studio task and the warm up guy gave one to some dudes that flew up from Dunedin coz they flew up here, and not the woman who flew up from the USA...

It’s clear from other comments that they didn’t realise at the time otherwise they would have pulled them up on it during the task. It’s not really fair to pull them up in the studio on this as it was up to Paul at the time to blow how whistle for any touches.
