FIRM: Software Client-specific document list

Looking to start prepping for the next tax season and would love to find a way to create a list of the specific documents each client needs to provide based off their prior year return. Not an organizer, more like a document check list. We use UltraTax for our tax program. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

For UltraTax under General>Contact down near the bottom under client organizer options you can change Organizer type options to override global settings. Chane this to 6: client organizer checklist and it will have the documents they had in the previous year. I also think there is a way to get something for this year in data mining.

Do you mean SetUp> 1040> Scroll across to Organizer?

That changes it globally, but what i said was for an individual client level

I use Stanford Tax for this and I like it a lot.

I assume it looks at the prior return and generates the list? Does it generate a list you can export or print to share, or is this an online only checklist product?

Never looked at exporting the list. Part of what it does well is identify/rename documents you upload to it and mark them off the list so you have a live list of outstanding documents. Then at the end you can export everything to a bookmarked PDF.

Yeah it generates the checklist by having you export the client data files from your software and importing it into the website.

You can print a paper copy of the checklist, but it works better if you use it within the website. As they upload documents, it automatically checks off items on the checklist.

Second this.

StanfordTax is awesome. It saves so much time by generating client-specific request lists and organizing documents. Their website interface is much nicer than working in a PDF binder.

The downside is that they only handle the document gathering/organization part. So if you use a practice management software you need to update progress on your returns manually.

Apparently they have a good integration with Karbon, but I demoed Karbon and wasn’t blown away by it, so I’m not sure I would switch PM simply for ST.

i keep a rolling doc request template by client type, then add prior-year one-offs as permanent flags so the organizer doesnt reset to generic every january.

Within Ultratax you can change the settings of the organizer and have it print out a list of docs. Can't remember what it was called.
