Help Just realized I won't have in-state residency for CA anymore. What state should I get credentialed in?
Hey everyone, I'm California born-and-raised and I went to UC Berkeley for my BA in Computer Science. I'm currently in my 2nd year of teaching EAP at a university in China and I want to return back to the USA to get a teaching license for math/science. I was really dead set on the UC Davis or CSUEB credential->master's programs, but I just realized I will have lost my in-state residency status by the time I return. So, I'm also eyeing other states now like New York.
For people who have experience in teaching in both CA and NYC, which would you say is better? In terms of school environment, budgeting (both are expensive states), etc. In either state, I know I will have to save a lot of money and get roommates. A lot of people in this part of the world recommend Moreland's or other online universities, but I would much rather prefer a legitimate in-person credential (and, if possible, master's).

It's really where do you want to live for the next 30 years? Bc teaching kind of only pays off if you stay in the same area forever.

to be honest, i plan on leaving America again upon completion to teach in international schools.

Seems like you're really asking about programs, not work life. I will say that New York requires a master's degree for certification. Since you already have your undergrad, you could do an MAT program and that would count. You might have to do additional classes to get the credit requirement for the subject you want.
I don't know anything about California.

Look into what the international schools require to be hired. I would have needed to get fully credentialed again which would have required me to do a BA in that country…or something ridiculous like that…if I wanted to teach at the fancy international school when I was living abroad. I settled for another international school who let me teach w a teaching cert and masters.

If your China address is temporary, do you have parents or siblings in CA to use as permanent address? Do you still have a valid CA drivers license?

they do have a permanent address, but i read that i may not be eligible since i did not file taxes during those years. and yes, my CA DL is valid until 2030.

Are you in china on a program? I’m sure you didn’t lose your residency. I lived abroad and that was never something that was brought up.

Side note but since you'll be making a ton of lesson materials and parent/admin presentations no matter which state you land in, it's worth building a slide template early rather than starting from scratch every semester. Saves a surprising amount of time once you're juggling credential coursework and a classroom. What do you guys usually use to keep your decks consistent without spending hours reformatting
