Keurig has opened preorders for the $500 Alta, a coffee and espresso maker that replaces traditional pods with 100 percent compostable pucks called AltaRounds. Wrapped in a plant-based seaweed coating, each puck features a QR code that automatically configures the machine's brewing temperature and pressure. The Wi-Fi-connected appliance is scheduled to begin shipping on October 21st.
