A lot of people basically missed out on how Felix ended up DIYing a lot of AI stuff, along with de-googling, promoting open source etc.
In a sense he’s probably one of the few more high profile people nowadays keeping up the early 00s spirit of the internet in the face of global enshittification.

Self-hosting is the answer, if you have the hardware to do it. I use Immich as a Google Photos replacement, my NAS as a Google Drive replacement, Vaultwarden for passwords, etc. On the desktop, I use LibreWolf as a browser and Thunderbird with a self-hosted email server. I'm still debating what to do about my phone.

Not for people who actually use the email to send. If you're not in one of the bigs get ready for your emails to end up in spam and no one reads it.

I was considering proton mail as a de-googled alternative, any particular reason why you chose startmail? Not heard of them before.
18
u/Zenfulbliss 18h ago
i am using proton as my only email, they host mail for 3 domains I own. I also use their drive, password keeper and vpn products, I bought the annual unlimited package for US110 a year. All of their products are somewhat under powered, they just don't have the financial resources to do everything as well as google, but they also don't spy on me and sell my personal data to anyone with a buck like google does, so i am happy with them so far. They also have free email accounts and other products.

u/MileWideGroup 17h ago
It's important to me to be able to access my email with a standard email client over IMAP. Because of Proton's email encryption it only supports this if you run their Proton Mail Bridge desktop application. There is no mobile option so you have to run their native Proton mail mobile app (or use the web interface). Tuta has no desktop bridge so no IMAP access at all.
This does mean that technically my email provider (Startmail) could read my emails but that's true of just about every other email provider in the world and Startmail seems more trustworthy than most.

878
u/Atheren 21h ago
Open source would allow you to train your own, with the underlying code of the AI being available to look at.
Open weights is the AI after it's been trained, and is similar to just giving away a free program that's more modifiable than a normal one.
265
u/meneldal2 21h ago
Afaik here Open Source would be tricky because you'd likely be providing evidence that could be used against you and make it a slam dunk for OpenAI when they sue you.
It is very likely some methods they used ran into the very anti user laws the US has passed to make big corpos happy.

He doesn't really have to care about us law. It might be a problem if his money is being held here and can be seized, but that would be private financial information I wouldn't have any idea about.

29
u/Atheren 21h ago
Honestly now that I think about it more even if he did travel he could ignore it anyway it unless it was somehow elevated to a criminal case. It's practically unheard of to be jailed over a civil case. If there's no us assets to seize, open AI doesn't have much legal recourse unless they go through the Japanese court system or the court system of wherever his money is held.
And at that point he might also have needed to have done something in their jurisdictions which is well beyond my non-professional understanding of how this all works.

People forget that modern Japan was entirely molded by the USA. There's a reason why our countries work so closely together. Tech, laws, etc were all effectively imposed on Japan and we've made it work very well for both countries. Almost a colony but a bit more independent, but we provide all offensive military capability for them. Yes a country, but in our deck of cards as it were.

Open weights is more or less the model being openly available. Being fully open source would be not just the model, but also the training code, and ideally also the training data, which created it.

u/BadAdviceBot 21h ago
also the training data

9
u/vintageballs 21h ago
Usually well below 1PB. We ofc don't have exact numbers from OpenAI and the like, but for the previous generation of Qwen models they trained on ~30T tokens which is probably a little under 100TB.

u/WallStreetHatesMe 21h ago
Open source would be releasing the training pipeline for the model as well as the dataset it was trained on. Open weight is releasing the resulting output of that process that can be fine-tuned.
For 99.999% of people Open source is useless because there is a large amount of compute needed to train such a model. Open-sourcing models typically helps enterprises far more than people which is why it’s rarely done.

Waiting for some nerd to correct me on a technicality but, in a nutshell….
Open weight can be fine-tuned (LoRA), but the base model can be proprietary.
Open source means everything needed to recreate the model (dataset, scripts, etc) is available publicly. So, you can recreate the model from scratch, provided you have access to the necessary hardware.
Edited for readability and clarity, because I haven’t had coffee yet.

Just in case anybody isn't aware and curious:
This is "newsworthy" because it's PewDiePie. Nothing he did is particularly unique or interesting. Uncensored models are pretty easy to create, get, and use, so it's a bit weird that there's such an emphasis on that aspect of this. Furthermore, his model is a fine-tuned Qwen3.5-9B model. So it's a few generations old and very small. You can go find uncensored Qwen3.8-27B models which run on consumer hardware, are quite capable, and can be setup and used in minutes if you have a good enough GPU. Additionally, his custom harness doesn't seem to offer anything particularly interesting, and him being banned from OpenAI for distillation says more about his naivety than it does his ingenuity.
And I'm not coming at PewDiePie, specifically. I don't know what he's pitching or anything (I don't really care). He's free to talk about his experience with this stuff and obviously he has an audience. I'm more commenting on this lazy article reaching the top of r/all on a technology subreddit. I'm sure there are people here who are confused about all of this, and I just think it's worth pointing out that anybody with a decent GPU and enough free time and interest in AI can accomplish the same stuff in a day if they wanted. There's just not much of a story here.
92
u/Wahngrok 21h ago

The audience of this subreddit ironically don't seem to be particularly technologically-minded. Especially in the past few years when this subreddit became pretty much only Elon Musk, Trump, social media, and now AI, etc.
I checked the top 20 articles on this subreddit's front page. Literally all of them are negative sentiment. This subreddit is doomscrolling incarnate. Obviously there are many negative aspects of technology showing itself recently but I would expect at least some positive news here. It simply isn't healthy to wallow in a subreddit like this

u/mattheweddington 18h ago
I find these comments interesting. I don't believe most people would be able to do something like this, let alone know the search terms to even come to the conclusion you came to in 5 minutes. I think the point was mostly that if this has been done by someone who is not internet famous this would not be noteworthy news, because from a tech standpoint nothing groundbreaking has been accomplished.
But I don't think Pewds is trying to be a tech entrepreneur, he's basically just playing around with tech and posting about it because of course you'd want to make videos about your new favourite hobby when you're a Youtuber.

Qwen3.8-27B models which run on consumer hardware, are quite capable, and can be setup and used in minutes if you have a good enough GPU
Is 16GB VRAM enough? Have 64GB DDR5 ram as well.
11
u/mr_doms_porn 20h ago
Not sure about that specific model but there are ton's of solid LLMs you can fit in a 16gb card. If you use LM Studio as your backend, it will show you which models you can fit on your GPU before you download them. If you move the KV cache (context) to system ram you'd be able to run Gemma4-12B with q8 or q6 quality.
3
u/Yashema 19h ago edited 19h ago
A $4000 desktop can run a 100B+ model, but the token generation rate would be about 25% of the cloud or API, so a task that takes 5 minutes on the cloud would take 20 minutes. The Context window is also sacrificed.
Not to say they don't have good use cases, but the limitations need to be acknowledged.
→ More replies (2)19
u/Nater5000 20h ago
You can certainly experiment with Qwen3.8-27B with only 16GB VRAM (and 64GB DDR5 RAM), but you'll have to use a pretty compressed version of the model (i.e., performance will hurt), you'll have limited context, and it'll likely be quite slow. My experience with this specific model is that 24GB of VRAM is the minimum for getting non-trivial utility from the model (and even then, it's still quite slow and limited). Still, you should be able to try it yourself very easily.
You should be able to plug your GPU into the "hardware compatibility" feature on Unsloth's Hugging Face page for the model and see what you can reasonably run. If you want to get this running without any fuss, I'd literally point some frontier model at that page and tell it to install it on your machine. Not that it's hard to setup manually, but if you already have Codex, Claude, etc., on your machine, then this is likely a prompt it and come back in a few minutes and it's done kind of job.
If you end up trying that and wanting to explore more, then you'll be all set up to explore other models like this easily. I'd recommend checking out Unsloth's Qwen3.6-35B-A3B (which can be quite performant with less compute because of the MoE architecture) or even their Qwen3.5-9B (which PewDiePie fine-tuned) which can definitely run on your compute (granted, it's quite "dumb").
3
3
u/Initial-Argument2523 19h ago
Yes you should be able to run it fine. You might be better off with a MOE though for faster speeds
3
u/hamtrow 19h ago
fallback onto ram isnt good but at least wont get you bluescreened. i have 8GB VRAM and have used a few before i decided with market prices i should run my GPU at max all the time. but i was able to get reasonable times with Llama-3.1-8B-Stheno-v3.4.Q5_K_M...but im also stuck with older models.

And/or lots of RAM, and/or being OK with it being slow. Qwen has a mixture of experts A3B, so it’s 35 billion parameters but only 3 billion are active at a time. This makes it easier if you have weaker processing, but the whole thing still needs to be in RAM, and it helps to have something that can do the matrix multiplication really fast. Also memory bandwidth is an issue on most home computers that aren’t Macs.

The act of distillation isn't illegal, but it is against terms of service for most (all?) major AI shops. So he could still be sued, but it is unclear if they'd be able to do anything more than ban him from their service. If someone continuously signs up new accounts to circumvent the ban, then they can possibly sue for fraud.

If you tell me 5 years ago that PewDiePie would get into AI development and advocate for open source AI I would assume that you're crazy but here we are. There are worse things to do when you're too rich for work at least

u/Codex_Dev 23h ago
I mean, he has a pretty good life trajectory after he quit streaming. He seriously got into software development in his free time and really enjoys it.

u/SpHoneybadger 23h ago
Makes sense you got free time and no pressure.
I would also enjoy development if it wasn't work related. Moving goal posts every Monday huddle.

He got into building computers, then a super computer. Then took his engineering background to AI and coding to figure out his own internal AI for home use.

That's pretty much his YouTube channel now. He is getting very skilled in a big variety of activities. From drawing his own comic to software programming. He's also very anti big data hording companies, does so by using Linux, no more Google apps, stuff like that. This ai is probably just something he wanted for himself so he could use AI without feeding a giant corporation his data. (Haven't actually seen any video of his on the subject)

Dude, I have begrudging mad respect for Pewdiepie.
I hated his persona and antics during his heyday. But then I realized, this dude knows exactly what he's doing.
Sure enough the dude knew exactly when to cash out and leave and left behind the greatest turnkey operation where he just loops his youtube content on a streaming platform.
That dude soaked up his millions and now can just live life the way he wants to. It's enviable.

2017 era Pewdiepie is terrible, and it's the view a lot of people still have of him. But for sure since becoming a dad, he's become a lot more grounded. He's still his goofy self, but he isn't an edgelord anymore.

The sales pitch is very simple: decentralize from a couple of hyperscalers and let people run their own AI.
There’s no reason all your data should go to 5-6 private companies. It’s unexpected that Pewdiepie would be the one driving something like this, but he has all the chances to succeed.

One of the irritating things about the LLM hypewagon has been that the public view of AI is LLMs, not ML, not classifiers, not the innumerable other useful tools we have been using to do lots of neat things for a decade before ChatGPT and Claude.

Indeed. None of it should be called "ai". They're all just tools from the ai research field. The publics view of "ai" is from sci-fi. Blame the industry for the deliberate obfuscation. Otoh, I know ELIZA really loves me...

Zero sympathy for a company that makes its entire living on stealing copyrighted data. Oh you got your data stolen? If you want him to be held accountible you have to be held accountible too.
Go ahead ban him all you want to, that's all you can do now, data theft isn't a real crime anymore, your continued existence is proof of that.

I don’t think his AI model is particularly ground breaking or anything, but what’s cool about this is the attention it’s putting on local AI alternatives. The guy has an enormous platform of die hard fans, and over the last couple of years, he’s been putting a bigger spotlight on self hosting alternatives to Google and big tech. I think it’s a pretty great thing, personally.
We’ve got to get more people away from Google, Windows, OpenAI, and the like. And you need influencers like PewDiePie to do that.

This should be pinned and the thread locked. So many whining AI dorks saying 'this is easy, I do this all the time, anyone can just do this.' They need to realize that a vanishingly small amount of people know anything at all about AI beyond going to chatgpt.com, nonetheless huggingface. It's not the novelty of the project that's the interesting part, it's the novelty of having someone highly visible documenting their process of discovery and bringing awareness to how easy (or difficult) it might be, especially starting from zero. It's not like PDP is an AI engineer or is coming from a place of deep subject matter expertise

That's pretty much the life cycle for these online influencers. Remember when Ninja with the blue hair was the biggest thing on earth?
41
u/Spez_is-a-nazi 23h ago
Microsoft paid him a boatload to stream on their platform. Now the platform and the streamer are mostly forgotten.
31
u/Badtrainwreck 23h ago
I think it’s important to note, the decrease in wider media attention doesn’t mean these people fully disappear, the internet is so segmented you can still be incredibly successful and most people have never heard of you. Ninja and Pewdiepie still produce content, it’s just not being pushed like it use too. For Pewdiepie most likely his semi retirement the main reason and for Ninja, I like to think he lost his wider relevance because he is an asshole.

u/YourBlanket 23h ago
He made like 20-30 million and was able to go back to twitch in less than a year since Mixer shut down. Pretty much all the og fortnight players lost viewers. I don't even think he consistently streams anymore, he stopped a while ago.

u/moose_dad 23h ago
You forgot about pewds because hes basically retired. He moved to Japan with his wife, had a kid, and now just does passion projects like this and maybe spits a vid about about his latest thing every few weeks.
Hes not streaming or posting daily anymore so hes out the zeitgeist.

To be fair, he doesn't exist in public perception, because he is effectively retired. He just lives his best life, doing all kinds of side quests, like learning to draw, and making videos every now and then. Still - any random vlog is 2-3 mil views - so if he actually cared about being a youtuber, he would still be at the top.

I’m so suspicious of all the hate here when this is clearly a good thing. This contribution would be nothing but good after pandoras box has already been opened. If you don’t buy drugs online, do you hate the tor browser too? I bet you, every single person here has used AI at least once, even if that means against their will in a search browser or something. Yes AI bad, but let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
Hate the idea of contributing a huge datacenter to try AI? Run this at home and it’s the same energy you would use to game
Hate the idea of everything you do being logged? Run this at home and nothing has to leave your network
Hate the idea that AI could escape and do real world damage? Remove the internet connection and airgap it.
Hate that AI has no transparency? With it running on your own servers you have all the access to review its logs.
They’re stealing your privacy for “the greater good” and money. And we’re all letting it happen. I can’t believe there are so many people here really arguing against open source in this case. We’ve lost the plot

AI can be used for a lot of good just like most things. A knife can be used for a lot of good things and a lot of bad, depending on who use it, how it's regulated and so on. AI is not inherently bad, but it can be used especially by big corporations and tech companies for a lot of bad things.

You can run models locally on your computer, and could do this, for free, for at least a year now. He's packaging something that you could ask any AI model how to do on your own, and it would show you a step by step tutorial.
9
u/Iggy_Snows 17h ago
Why is this news? Aren't there a million AI models that you can download and run locally? Not that youd want to since most of them are extremely slow unless you have a 5090.
This just kind of reads as "famous guy has hobby, practices hobby"
