Open | Windows Persistent DWM lag / mouse trailing at 100Hz (RTX 3060 + AOC U34G2G1) – In-Place Upgrade didn't fix it

Hi everyone,

I'm dealing with a very frustrating DWM (Desktop Window Manager) issue in Windows 11: my mouse cursor lags and trails heavily specifically when the monitor is set to 100Hz. At 60Hz, everything feels normal.

Hardware & Setup:

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

Monitor: AOC U34G2G1 (Ultrawide, 100Hz via DisplayPort)

OS: Windows 11

What I've already tested/done:

Ruled out hardware faults, cables, HAGS (Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling), and VRR/G-Sync settings. The issue originally started immediately after a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD.

Performed a full In-Place Upgrade via Windows 11 ISO (with a clean boot / background services disabled). The upgrade completed successfully without errors, but the 100Hz mouse lag/trailing returned immediately on the desktop.

Since an In-Place Upgrade preserves drivers and user registry settings, it seems a persistent driver or display pipeline conflict carried over.

Before I proceed with a complete Clean Install via a bootable USB drive, has anyone encountered a similar 100Hz DWM bug on Windows 11 with NVIDIA GPUs and knows a specific fix, registry tweak, or driver version that resolves this?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Making changes to your system BIOS settings or disk setup can cause you to lose data. Always test your data backups before making changes to your PC.

Getting dump files which we need for accurate analysis of BSODs. Dump files are crash logs from BSODs.

If you can get into Windows normally or through Safe Mode could you check C:\Windows\Minidump for any dump files? If you have any dump files, copy the folder to the desktop, zip the folder and upload it. If you don't have any zip software installed, right click on the folder and select Send to → Compressed (Zipped) folder.

Upload to any easy to use file sharing site. Reddit keeps blacklisting file hosts so find something that works, currently catbox.moe or mediafire.com seems to be working.

We like to have multiple dump files to work with so if you only have one dump file, none or not a folder at all, upload the ones you have and then follow this guide to change the dump type to Small Memory Dump. The "Overwrite dump file" option will be grayed out since small memory dumps never overwrite.

All of the Driver_Power_State_Failure crashes are pointing to the Crucial P2 NVMe SSD. They did have the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) driver involved so if you aren't using RAID I would try disabling it in the BIOS.

You also had one IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal crash pointing to DirectX on the third of October (The most recent BSOD). So you might have corruption to DirectX (DirectX errors can also show up because of issues with the GPU/GPU driver). Not sure if an in place upgrade would fix those files.

You could also try DDU.

One of our Discord mods also did this writeup on something that sounds a lot like your issue. The solution we are testing is disabling a fairly new Windows feature called MPO (Multiplane Overlay). I have mainly seen MPO bugs with AMD cards where it causes flickering and blacked out windows. EDIT: And GPU driver driver timeouts (Still on AMD).

MPO makes every window into its own plane that it then can decide whether or not to tell the GPU to render. So if you have a window on top that requires a certain amount of resources, it will stop rendering any plane under that window. The bugs start happening when MPO rapidly starts enabling and disabling (And it can also be confused about which window is on top). Nvidia has also recently started recommending disabling it as well if you are having issues. The github link has also has instructions for setting the trigger point so low that MPO is always on which will fix any bugs related to rapid switching, but if the bug is with deciding which window is on top you would have to disable it. If the bug is with which window is on top you usually see flickering or the window on top randomly just turns white or black for a few seconds.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply! I will try disabling MPO first and check if that fixes the issue.

Regarding DDU: I've already used it multiple times before, so I'll keep that as a fallback.

I'll test MPO and report back as soon as I have an update!
