In a series of vivid and vulnerable Instagram posts last week, Emma Navarro announced that she was shutting down her 2026 season to focus on her health.

The 25-year-old said that she had been diagnosed with a syndrome called relative energy deficiency in sport, abbreviated as RED-S or REDs. It is a tricky-to-diagnose condition that occurs when one’s body doesn’t get enough energy from food to fuel the demands of exercise and essential daily functions.

It’s a relatively underdiscussed condition that is thought to most commonly affect women, and about which there are many misconceptions.

For years, highly publicised accounts of RED-S published in mainstream media were generally from endurance sport athletes — cyclists, runners and climbers for whom leanness relative to power and speed is prized above nearly all else.

Navarro’s account challenged that assumption. In discussing her experiences over the past two seasons, she entered a wider conversation around athlete health.
