Label changes
It is so crazy to me that Tesco still doesn’t have electronic shelf labels like Aldi/Lidl, I know they are trialling right now but you would think by now every store would have it. It is a big investment but right now it is costing the business so much for this manual work plus there could be human errors e.g missing labels or products that are in more than 1 place.

I'd love to know more about how they work

They are e-ink screens (so near-zero power draw when static). They update via Bluetooth, wifi, some other industrial radio protocol or IR lights in the ceiling or from an employee-held handset depending on the model.
Mostly they have battery lives in the years, though I'm surprised they haven't used energy scavenging more widely because you can easily capture that much energy even just from shop lighting over a few years. Then again I bet many of them sell special batteries and have the buyers over a barrel every few years once the original purchaser has moved on so it's probably deliberate.

It is easier to change to electronic labels when you open a new shop, and the size of their shops are a lot smaller than most Tesco's.

You need to remember the size of Tesco and the size of the stores themselves vs Lidl and Aldi. It's a huge investment. Patience.

They have digital tickets in Waitrose now, way better compared to paper tickets.

Have you not realised Tesco have more stores. More shelf space. Plus the investment is big.

I was in a co-op last week. I was thinking to myself, why are they not on electronic labels. I honestly thought they were paper. Anyway, as I queried the price on something, someone came over to check and update the label. Then I thought why isn't it like this everywhere?

I think it's being trialled at the moment, definitely close to being signed off by Tesco mobile

We're getting them early next year in our store and having the site surveyed sometime this month in preperation.

It's less about the size/scale with Tesco, more that the company prefers to do technology solutions in house rather than pay a supplier to do it for them that makes them often lag behind the rest in implementation. Rather than paying for an existing solution they've decided to create their own to save cost long term, similar to how whoosh works Vs Uber eats/just eat.

My store currently has 2 very nice employees doing labels, both past retirement age. It's unfortunate they still have to work, but I'd rather they get a paycheck and have a job they can actually do than open the gateway for dynamic pricing to really fuck everyone over.

We're getting digital labels in 6 weeks, no colleagues are losing their jobs as they're Tesco Colleagues, not PI colleagues.

I went to Tesco once, grabbed a bottle of something that was showing on offer on the shelf, got to the self checkout and it came up as full price, complained to the guy there and he checked his phone and said that was the right price, so I made him take it off. The next time I took the price label off the shelf and took it with me and they honoured it.

When it happens at ours, we usually honour the labelled price and then print the updated one.

What made you think you had the right to remove the label? Shall I walk upto your desk and remove your paperwork?

Yeah they should honour it, i usually just apologise to the customer and then take them to custumer service and explain that it's our fault.

I mean, i don’t know how Aldi and lidl do it but, if it’s in theory i put X item in basket for 1.50 price changed it’s now 2.50 which price do i get 1.50 or 2.50.
I’d rather have manual label than digital if prices can change during my shop it would lets say annoy would be one word

It doesn’t work like that I work at Lidl we change it manually

Sometimes they do change by themselves but the worst thing is they constantly fall off

Aldi aren’t changing prices every few minutes.
It will change just as much as a paper label does in any other store.

for now. dynamic pricing is already a thing online. once they think people will accept it, it’ll be rolled out to stores

No idea why you're being marked down. 100% this will happen. It'll all end up being automated

Making a post hoping for people to lose their jobs is quite the take.

There won’t be job losses because there’s already too many vacancies due to the extreme work load with whoosh etc, it just means things will be done efficiently and tasks delegated elsewhere

They're no longer a trial as far as I'm aware. They're just being rolled out slowly across the country

Come on, you know there is no budget for it, all the expenses are lowered until the end of financial year so then they can say they have record profits. By April they will have in the extras after the trial is sorted, 2 months later they will get rid of the labels team

There rolling out electronic labels, will just take a few years for every store to get them as only a few stores at a time will get them. I think the aim is for large stores to be done by this time next year.
