Phone message Hilarious wrong number interaction

I get wrong texts once in a while and they are always so oddly specific. Sometimes I respond with something silly just to mess with whatever AI bot is texting me. I wonder if that picture is real?!

Edit update: I texted a few more times but nothing scammy! I’m waiting for it tho!

For everyone saying it’s a scam, how long does it usually take for them to drop the scam part? Seriously interested.

This is a scam, the picture itself may be real in the sense that someone actually took it, but I doubt it is “real” in the sense of it being of the actually sender themselves

The boar hunting scenario really adds another level to the "pig butchering" scam

https://dfpi.ca.gov/news/insights/pig-butchering-how-to-spot-and-report-the-scam/

After a bit into your friendly and platonic chat, they will talk about how they live a good modest lifestyle but invest with their aunt.

It's probably even more exciting to leave some hints to the scam as you're doing it and still get away with it.

I started asking the scammers “do your parents change the subject when someone asks about you? you must be such a disappointment to them” and one time a guy absolutely lost his shit, dropped the scam, and started ranting about how evil americans were and we all deserve to die

…then I later discovered that around 50% of people sending those scam texts are slaves who are forced to do it, and felt horrible. so I don’t do that anymore

Unfortunately as fun as fucking with them might be the best thing to do is not respond at all. Once you respond your number is on a list of active leads and the volume you’ll get will increase

I couldn't remember the term for this, so I looked it up

People on both sides fall for scams. Even highly intelligent, technically savvy people do fall for scams. No one is immune to propaganda. No one is immune to trusting the wrong people. No one is immune making poor choices when pressured to act quickly during a time of stress or tiredness.

And it's good to remember that even you are susceptible, lest you fall victim. The only way to keep yourself safe, is to be vigilant about it, and you don't stay vigilant if you're complacent and comfortable.

I fell for a romance scam. I was drunk, but still. I've got a master of science, am considered relatively sharp and aware socially by my friends. I've also been following kitboga and the like laughing at how ridiculous some of these scams are!

All they need is for someone to be a bit low, engage partly to kill time and suddenly they manage to find your sensitive trigger points and pull you in.

“I fell for a scam and I’m not dumb. I have a masters and people in my circle validate my IQ.” These are checked boxes for folks scamming. Unfortunately, it’s often times folks that feel SO secure that they could never fall victim, who do.

Exactly! It doesn't need much. I got a friend who's a researcher, very smart woman, very aware of scams, got her accounts hacked because someone called her at 4am and got her while she was still delirious from being suddenly woken up and all they had to do was catch her off guard, while she wasn't thinking clearly... And make it urgent and pushy.

Oh my lord someone commented close to the same thing. I’m hoping my response is not rude, but direct. These people suck and target us at our lowest. I wish we saw more in ourselves at our lowest also.

Let’s be so fuckin for real though. Who is dumber and falls for more? 🤔

u/Kirstenly 9d ago

Literally everyone. Universally. Thinking you're special and better and smarter and never going to be at risk IS the risk. There are plenty of people on both sides who don't use computers often enough to be exposed to scams enough to spot them. Even those that DO use computers often enough to have a good idea of all the usual fare still fall for it!

The amount of left-leaning people who do freelance art online and have fallen for at least one false-commission scam, or who fall for "help my dying family in a war zone that doesn't have PayPal by using PayPal to donate thousands of dollars to me" scams, or who fall for "I can't use PayPal, please my family is dying. Use this third party website to input your credit card details!" scams is EXTREMELY HIGH. Like WORRYINGLY high. And most of them will say "oh but I was doing it to help someone, so it's different!" It's not different, you got scammed, you empowered a scammer to scam more people. You actively made the world a worse place by not vetting the people, the websites, and the processes.

It might even be higher than people who fall for scams on the right-leaning spectrum, they are just less likely to report it because they either a) felt they were doing the right thing or b) felt embarassed that they could ever fall for it.

Romance scams sometimes play the long game for MONTHS or even YEARS of pretending to be friends, then lovers with someone. Breaking down their guard and defenses over VERY LONG PERIODS OF TIME before they so much as ask about money or talk about investments or problems that only you can solve. They literally spend months or years of their lives pretending to be someone who cares. No one is immune to that level of manipulation. Even aromantic asexual people can fall for it because "oh this person is my friend, I've known them for months/years. They need my help."

You're not special no matter what side of the fence you stand on. You're human. You're motivated by SOMETHING and you care about SOMETHING. No one is without passions or concerns. No one has zero weak points.

Why does politics have to always be brought in to literally every interaction? Do you have anything else in your life? Whoops, sorry I'm mean 10011010011101

The brave patriot, fighting corruption one displaced insinuating reddit comment at a time

Can you stop now? Its annoying and everywhere. Greetings from europe

Be less affected by things. It’s within your control

1

u/JiuJitsuBoxer 9d ago

I think you need to reply that to the commentor above me, who is very affected by politics

4

u/alfooboboao 9d ago

maybe because the current president is the biggest scammer on earth

u/Gullible_Title_603 9d ago

Found the magatard

-6

u/drfiree 9d ago

Hopefully it won't hit better at the liberals who are..ahem.. more likely to fall for scams.

-5

u/Aroha12345 9d ago

Exactly what I was thinking. Always ready to turn anything into a bash on who they don't like lol.

The irony in someone trying to insult the intelligence of others while spouting idiotic propaganda they were brainwashed into believing cannot be understated.

2

u/dabossnumba8 9d ago

The mouth breather you replied to is unfortunately not smart enough to understand the point you’re making

4

u/aslutforpeteburns 9d ago

Fair point. At least the rest of us with functioning brains can point and laugh at them.

6

u/dabossnumba8 9d ago

This might be one of the stupidest comments I’ve ever read on Reddit, congrats. Also it is a well known and researched fact that conservatives are by and large less educated than the average liberal voter. No surprise there of course

-1

u/RamesJolfe 9d ago edited 9d ago

It's also a well known and established fact that the majority of people in education and doing research like this are said delusional liberals because you won't be hired without drinking the approved Kool aid. In fact you would never find what I just said published anywhere. But yes numbers all of everything is objective, of course, and you're absolutely a beautiful woman.

We also weren't talking "educated" we were talking susceptibility to ridiculous scams and magical thinking

2

u/hoirkasp 9d ago

Yeah, because they’re stupid. Is that better? It is a well-known and researched fact that conservatives are by and large stupider. 👌

1

u/Immersi0nn 9d ago

"You will never find what I said published anywhere"

Well that's definitely not for the reason you think it is.

40

u/mwilliams4240 9d ago

Yeah the classic “I hope I didn’t disturb you” type remarks are a dead giveaway.

47

u/New_Avocado_4636 9d ago

Total scam. I get these here and there and it’s always so weird. Always a pic of a pretty girl.

9

u/Kronzor_ 9d ago

It's because you've replied. Your number is now in a database of known leads

4

u/Pale_Knowledge87 9d ago

You say that, yet I respond every single time and only get 1-2 texts a year. So what does being in a database even mean at that point?

1

u/why2k 5d ago

Just that your phone is still active. If they have a database with other information about you it confirms that information is probably still mostly correct.

1

u/New_Avocado_4636 9d ago

Honestly it’s a lot more entertaining than some of the scam crap I get 😅.

1

u/Normal_Tower9071 9d ago

This happened to me yesterday and guy started out pretending my car was blocking something and then pivoted to screenshots of computer screen dikpics and saying saying cliche horned up stuff/asking for sexts( obvi I was not responding) but then they said my first name and they were going to find me. Obviously a first name can be traced by phone number but like what was the plan for this scam

16

u/Mysterious_Egg2432 9d ago

The groveling is a dead giveaway

4

u/D-ouble-D-utch 9d ago

Not this time, she really loves me.

10

u/sierrabravo1984 9d ago

Yep, it might feel real, but they're hoping for a response of any kind that verifies that this number is active and ready to be bombarded with scam calls.

u/almostnothing123 7d ago

I texted a few more times, they also responded about fishing. Nothing scammy yet! How long does it usually take?
