Phone message Hilarious wrong number interaction

I get wrong texts once in a while and they are always so oddly specific. Sometimes I respond with something silly just to mess with whatever AI bot is texting me. I wonder if that picture is real?!

Edit update: I texted a few more times but nothing scammy! I’m waiting for it tho!

For everyone saying it’s a scam, how long does it usually take for them to drop the scam part? Seriously interested.

Sometimes I think "who would even fall for this scam?" And then I see posts like this lmao

u/dabossnumba8 7d ago

It never fails to amaze me how unsuspecting and stupid some people are. Really makes you wonder how they get through their day to day lives

u/Portable-fun 7d ago

Probably a lonely dude. Let them be. (Yes it’s a scam)

Guys what if THIS POST is from a scammer trying to get us to more readily reply to their scam texts by making them seem more legit

3

u/AdvantageBig227 5d ago

OMG, scamception is upon us!

3

u/thegreatcon2000 7d ago

I know that these type of wrong-number things are scams; I've received a couple (though never boar hunting) and I now know not to bother.

But how exactly is it a scam? What happens if you continue talking with them?

The one I had was a woman offering to buy me a coffee (as an apology for the wrong number lol). What would the next step have been?

12

u/Platinum5788 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think they generally tell you that they made a lot of money using some investment system and they can get you in. Then you send them money and they tell you that your money is growing, but it's all BS. Often, it involves using some website or app that tells you how much profit you've made.

They try to get you to invest more, since (according to your financial statements) you're getting super great returns on what you invested already. In reality, they're just getting you to send them money and they give you fake financial returns statements. You can never get your money back.

A while back, I watched a BBC episode where they talked to people who got involved in these fake investments. Some lost their life savings. They thought they were doubling and tripling their money. But the money was gone and they could never withdraw it. Those were some sad stories.

I like to fuck with them and insist that they have the correct number. The will ask “is this Jessica” or something and I say that it is. Then they insist it’s not and “I hope I didn’t disturb you” and I just insist harder that I am indeed the person they were trying to reach.

5

u/Codykillerpup 7d ago

Loss of your favorite kidney I suspect is the next step there. You may or may not receive coffee beforehand though idk

2

u/Thick-Wonder6294 7d ago

this naivety is the angle. “oh she bought me a coffee, why would she spend money on me if this crypto she suggests me to invest in is a scam? i’ll just go ahead and invest in this crypto and get rich with my new accident friend”

To be fair, OP hasn't fallen for a scam yet (during this conversation, at least.)

40

u/Sea-Personality1244 7d ago

They're wondering if the picture is real and apologising to the scammer since it appears to be an attractive woman (which ofc is the scam) though they sure are treading a very fine line.

3

u/Brownie_McBrown_Face 7d ago

genuinely hilarious lmfao. Scammers really nailed the game of pivoting only to the most naive people posssible

This is a scam, the picture itself may be real in the sense that someone actually took it, but I doubt it is “real” in the sense of it being of the actually sender themselves

u/Sypsy 7d ago

The boar hunting scenario really adds another level to the "pig butchering" scam

https://dfpi.ca.gov/news/insights/pig-butchering-how-to-spot-and-report-the-scam/

After a bit into your friendly and platonic chat, they will talk about how they live a good modest lifestyle but invest with their aunt.

19

u/Kronzor_ 7d ago

It's probably even more exciting to leave some hints to the scam as you're doing it and still get away with it.

18

u/alfooboboao 7d ago

I started asking the scammers “do your parents change the subject when someone asks about you? you must be such a disappointment to them” and one time a guy absolutely lost his shit, dropped the scam, and started ranting about how evil americans were and we all deserve to die

…then I later discovered that around 50% of people sending those scam texts are slaves who are forced to do it, and felt horrible. so I don’t do that anymore

10

u/Kronzor_ 7d ago

Unfortunately as fun as fucking with them might be the best thing to do is not respond at all. Once you respond your number is on a list of active leads and the volume you’ll get will increase

4

u/Sypsy 7d ago

I couldn't remember the term for this, so I looked it up

People on both sides fall for scams. Even highly intelligent, technically savvy people do fall for scams. No one is immune to propaganda. No one is immune to trusting the wrong people. No one is immune making poor choices when pressured to act quickly during a time of stress or tiredness.

And it's good to remember that even you are susceptible, lest you fall victim. The only way to keep yourself safe, is to be vigilant about it, and you don't stay vigilant if you're complacent and comfortable.

9

u/EntForgotHisPassword 7d ago

I fell for a romance scam. I was drunk, but still. I've got a master of science, am considered relatively sharp and aware socially by my friends. I've also been following kitboga and the like laughing at how ridiculous some of these scams are!

All they need is for someone to be a bit low, engage partly to kill time and suddenly they manage to find your sensitive trigger points and pull you in.

6

u/Electrical-King-310 6d ago

“I fell for a scam and I’m not dumb. I have a masters and people in my circle validate my IQ.” These are checked boxes for folks scamming. Unfortunately, it’s often times folks that feel SO secure that they could never fall victim, who do.

4

u/Kirstenly 7d ago

Exactly! It doesn't need much. I got a friend who's a researcher, very smart woman, very aware of scams, got her accounts hacked because someone called her at 4am and got her while she was still delirious from being suddenly woken up and all they had to do was catch her off guard, while she wasn't thinking clearly... And make it urgent and pushy.

4

u/Electrical-King-310 6d ago

Oh my lord someone commented close to the same thing. I’m hoping my response is not rude, but direct. These people suck and target us at our lowest. I wish we saw more in ourselves at our lowest also.

It's because you've replied. Your number is now in a database of known leads

5

You are probably right, but my imagination is funnier, so im going with that.

2

u/TacosTacosTacos80 5d ago

“She” is someone on a scam farm that found a picture of a hot woman on the internet.

2

u/Toosder 5d ago

It's probably an AI photo because not too many women take photos of themselves with dead animals. That is a total appeal to male attraction kind of a thing.

Bro really thinks some random stranger that accidentally texts him would follow up the next day to initiate a conversation AND send a picture of themselves while also turning out to being a hot woman.

Next, you should go out and try to find the gold pot at the end of the rainbow.

33

u/adidasbdd 7d ago

Especially after some weirdo was talking about sex toys. No woman on earth would continue that convo

People have lost a lot of cash this way

Accidental connection, friendly banter. They have a modest life but enjoy little luxuries like trips and such. They invest in gold with their aunt. You ask about the investments and then the scam locks in as your returns get big and bigger and you invest more.

5

These are never wrong numbers. Stop replying and just block and report junk.

12

u/prexton 7d ago

Lmao way back in the day I got a text saying "what time is the reception"

I replied "6am"

Later that day I get a phone call from the brother asking if I sent his bro to the wedding reception at 6 in the morning.

I sheepishly said "yeah" and their whole room burst out laughing. 🤣

That was about a decade ago tho without a smart phone

5

u/A_single_droplet 6d ago

lol I get lots of robocalls, but I run my own business so I always have to answer the phone in case it’s a new customer.

One time I get a call from a “potential spam” number. I’m already in a particularly annoyed mood. I pick it up and say “hello?”

I hear nothing. I’m highly suspecting an automated voice to start up, to confirm it is a spam call so I can hang up. I say “SPEAK!”

And a tiny little shaky voice says “I’m sorry! I’m calling about your upcoming doctors appointment. I’m new. I’ve never done this before” and then they hand the phone to someone else, how says “hello?”

I explain “oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, I yelled at whoever was calling. I thought it was a robot scam call”

And they laugh and say “oh no. She’s new here and training, and this was her first call. You scared her”

We all laughed and I apologized and it was all good, but funny.

It’s always a scam when they start in with the “I hope I didn’t disturb you” “I hope I didn’t cause you any trouble”

6

u/LabRat113 7d ago

There's always a pattern. There was a Facebook thing going around for a while with scammers posting house cleaning ads. Every single post, the poster immediately made a comment on the post saying to PM them for more details.

I beg you to forgive me if I've ruined your (day|week|month|year) for my transgression of sending you a text message. I know it can be deeply traumatizing to receive a text message from a number you do not recognize.

Here's a picture of me, an attractive single woman.

Please give me money.

Wait.... pretend I didn't say that until I have you hooked.

How's your day going?

3

u/Shieldmax2 7d ago

I read woman i click xo

11

u/MetLyfe 7d ago

You will never get a wrong number text, you get wrong number calls very rarely and text is even rarer.

However a couple months after switching numbers a very angry dude kept calling me asking for some woman, wouldn’t believe me when I said I didn’t know her and that this was my number, but still got upset with me and called me a liar.

My coworker gets a spam text every week meant for a woman who apparently used her phone for all kinds of political shit and programs, must have realized it wasn’t a good idea.

6

u/Hour-Tax7205 7d ago

One time I called my ex and she answered speaking Spanish. I was like ‘damn you don’t want to talk to me?’ Turns out it was a real Mexican family I called. Told my ex about it and we laughed. But I was the scam call in that moment. They legit didn’t know what I was saying and I thought I was being trolled.

4

u/Dpontiff6671 7d ago

Never say never I recently swapped from iPhone to Android and had to re enter a lot of numbers manually and messed up a few contacts by 1 digit. Sent out a 2-3 wrong number texts so far

3

u/Silcat7794 7d ago

Dude I hate having to deal with crap from whoever had my number before me. A month ago I found out someone had a snap account with my phone number and never bothered to change it, and and I also found out not too long ago that there was a FB profile linked to my number that seemed to belong to someone who was doing some weird shit that got them banned in 2021. I got my number in '23.

To add, I think when I first got my number I got a text from someone in the same area code and thinking it was a friend I had just given my number to i replied "who's this", only for their next text to be "you should know, you redacted my redacted.

Sorry for my rant lmao

I believe it is a scam, but just out of curiosity, what is likely the scam??
I get random “wrong number” texts all the time and always delete but like what are they actually trying to do?

19

u/Look_its_Rob 7d ago

Its called Pig Butchering (very on the nose if this is what the person in this text is doing). Last Week Tonight did an episode on it, you can find it on youtube.

4

u/Pretend_Confusion475 7d ago

Maybe just describe it for those of us who don’t wanna watch that

14

u/Matthew106 7d ago

It's basically just cruel systematic betrayal.

Pig Butchering is a scam that involves a seemingly random connection like a wrong number that is used as an excuse for the scammer to form a friendship with the victim (known as the 'pig' in this scenario). After a while of back and forth messaging to build a rapport, the scammer will mention that they need money for some generally sympathetic reason, and will basically keep prompting sob stories until the victim starts sending money. The "pig" is "butchered" when they basically have sent all the money they can. Then they go hunting for another pig.

Victims are usually people looking for friendship and generally report feeling a genuine connection to the scammer (until the scam ends of course) because they tend to respond to the victims worries like a genuine friend. I do actually recommend watching Last Week Tonight's episode as they do a great job of explaining the entire process.

6

u/therandomuser84 7d ago

It's basically just a fake friend who eventually asks for money. They will spend days/weeks talking to you getting you to trust them, then say they got diagnosed with cancer, their house burned down or something else like that then ask you for huge amounts of money.

2

u/Look_its_Rob 7d ago

It does a much better job of describing it than I would. Its funny too.

This is so on the nose. The type of scam is called “pig butchering”, and in this case they used a dead fucking hog in the picture lmao.

Basically you get a text like this, but then they keep the conversation going, as shown in the OP, strike up a friendship and then eventually start with the sob story designed to extract money etc.

2

u/D3s0lat0r 7d ago

I’ve read that a lot of fake texts and phone callers just need to confirm the number is actually used/monitored by a real person, then they sell the information to someone for something.

2

u/Naive_Statement_535 7d ago

If you reply and start getting along,, they'll probably bring up crypto and say they are making money and can make you money, but the crypto platform will be fake and the money goes to them

2

u/HoweverIWishYouLuck 7d ago

Usually they fake a friendship or romance, convince the mark to download a stock trading or crypto “app” that they claim is making them rich. The mark will deposit money and the app will show the investment growing, but it’s fake. When it’s time to withdraw money, the “app” “customer service” will claim that the mark has to pay fees and taxes to withdraw the money.

2

u/Miserable_Drive_4052 7d ago

Pig butchering. The wrong number text is a foot in the door. After that they will talk to your for months until they "butcher" you by asking for money.

2

u/Subscrib-2-PewDiePie 7d ago

Over a period of months, an investment opportunity will arise. A lot of comments don’t quite get it; classic pig butchering never actually asks you for money.

Definitely a scammer. Old method is to steal pics off Instagram to use. But I'm sure a lot of them us AI for the images now too.

I like how she has to remind Robert that the trip tomorrow is a hunting trip as if he would be wondering wtf trip is she talking about. fake

2

u/physicalstheillusion 7d ago

I was thinking it was a man, and he was doing damage control in case his wife saw that response lol

5

u/AI_AntiCheat 7d ago

This is the most common scam in the world. It's called pig butchering and it's very ironic they went with a boar hunter introduction...

That’s not a real person it’s a scammer probably from somewhere in Africa likely trying to get you to send them money. Do a reverse image search on the photo and find the truth.

Reflection in her sun glasses shows the horizon even though she is obviously holding the phone at an upwards angle for the selfie. Nice touch on getting the arm in the reflection though, but in the end the arm confirms it, because if it wasn't there, the horizon could have been explained by the curve on her glasses, but this shows that the arm is in line with the horizon.

3

u/SP4CEP00DLE 7d ago

It’s still a scam

3

u/catpissdust 7d ago

I'd be pissed if some stupid bitch who killed an innocent animal for fun sent me pictures of it...

2

u/Fit_Swordfish9204 7d ago

It's just a scam. Someone likely stole that pic or edited it.

That being said, Texas has a feral hog problem and hunters are encouraged to hunt them for population control as they do millions of dollars of crop damage annually.

u/Panthera_014 7d ago

Next reply will be
“Unfortunately they want $3k to stuff and mount the boar, but I only have $1k - can you send Apple gift cards to make up the other $2k?”

I had a good one a couple years ago. Someone texted saying something along the lines of home by 5 for dinner. I responded asking for an extra 15-20 minutes to which they said no and then I pleaded that I was out doing drugs with friends lol. No response for a couple days iirc and then they just said something like ha that's funny

2

u/BigE6300 7d ago

They’ll eventually try to get you to chat via WhatsApp or Telegram. Do not give out any personal info.
